Should We Sing Praises To God?

I want to talk about singing praises to God today. Should we sing praises to God?

Or, should we be silent throughout the day? Does God love silence more than singing?

In the case of my Dad (he can’t sing very well – just kidding), someone might think that God would rather him be silent since the sound coming out of his mouth doesn’t sound good to our human ears.

What if you can’t sing very well? Should you sing praises to God? God doesn’t hear as we hear, and He loves when anyone sings praises to Him.

Colossians 3:16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

Reading this verse probably already answers your question. Here are some more Bible verses about music:

Psalm 100:1-2 Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands. 2 Serve the Lord with gladness: come before his presence with singing.

Psalm 95:1-2 O come, let us sing unto the Lord: let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation. 2 Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving, and make a joyful noise unto him with psalms.

Ephesians 5:19 Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;

So far you’ll see that all of these are all talking about singing to God. There are also Scriptures that talk about using instruments.

A lot of people in churches do not use instruments. They say that the New Testament does not give us commands to use instruments instruments. They ignore the Old Testament as well because the believe the church began in Acts Chapter 2.

Is this true? No, absolutely not! Here are Bible verses about instruments:

Psalm 150:1-6 Praise ye the Lord. Praise God in his sanctuary: praise him in the firmament of his power. 2 Praise him for his mighty acts: praise him according to his excellent greatness. 3 Praise him with the sound of the trumpet: praise him with the psaltery and harp. 4 Praise him with the timbrel and dance: praise him with stringed instruments and organs. 5 Praise him upon the loud cymbals: praise him upon the high sounding cymbals. 6 Let every thing that hath breath praise the Lord. Praise ye the Lord.

Some instruments mentioned here are the trumpet, psaltery, harp, timbrel and dance, stringed instruments, organs, loud cymbals, and high sounding cymbals.

Now I realize that this is in the Old Testament, but who said the Old Testament doesn’t matter anymore? Jesus sure didn’t say that. Jesus says that He came to fulfill the law. He didn’t do away with the Scriptures and ignore them. Jesus quotes the Old Testament over and over and over again.

God never says once in the New Testament that the Old Testament is out of date.

Jesus always quotes the Old Testament because He write it! Here are some of the times Jesus quotes from the Old Testament.

Matthew 4:4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

Deuteronomy 8:3 And he humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know; that he might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the Lord doth man live.

John 8:17 It is also written in your law, that the testimony of two men is true.

Here is the Old Testament Scripture:

Deuteronomy 17:6 At the mouth of two witnesses, or three witnesses, shall he that is worthy of death be put to death; but at the mouth of one witness he shall not be put to death.

The Old Testament Scriptures about music and instruments are valid. God loves for us to sing praises to Him. God loves for us to use musical instruments to praise Him and worship Him.

We should be singing praises to God all throughout the day. You can sing within yourself if you can’t sing out loud. God loves when you do this. He’s listening! If you want to play instruments and make music to God, He loves that too.

You can clearly see this in the very last Psalm, Psalm 150:

Psalm 150:1-6 Praise ye the LORD. Praise ye the LORD.

You can even dance to the Lord. Sing and dance to Him. Play instruments to Him. Worship Him. He is God, and He has made all of creation.

He is an amazing, all mighty, and all powerful God who we love. We worship Him through singing.
