[2] The title of the sermon today is “THE OLD TESTAMENT VERSUS THE NEW TESTAMENT.”

The Bible Is Very Clear About The Differences In The Old and New Testament

• The Bible is very clear on the differences in the Old Testament and the New Testament.
• But, for most people, it’s not clear because of false doctrines and false religions.
• Man-made teaching over the years that doesn’t match the Bible makes it confusing.
• The Book of Hebrews is the book in the Bible that will help us with this confusion.
• God makes all things very clear, and I hope when we’re finished that you see this clearly now.

So, we have many different groups of people with different beliefs on the Old and New Testament.

• On one extreme, you have people who say we should be following all the laws in the Old Testament.
• On the other extreme, you have people saying that we don’t need to follow any of God’s laws.

For example, do we need to be doing all of the animal sacrifices and burnt offerings?

• Is circumcision required for all the males on the eighth day?
• Should we be observing the Sabbath Day? Should we not be eating meat or unclean animals?
• Or, should we just be ignoring everything from the Old Testament since we’re under grace?
• You have dispensationalists that think we don’t need to follow God’s laws any more.
• The 7^th Day Adventists think we must observe the Sabbath and if not we have taken the mark of the beast.
• Should we be observing the Passover feast? The land Sabbaths? Is homosexuality okay now?
• You have all these questions and arguments between the Old and New Testament.

And look, after this sermon, I hope this is very easy for you to understand from this point forward.

• So, let’s start out with an example from Hebrews Chapter 9. This is a good one to start with.
• This is going to answer the question about animal sacrifices and other offerings.

[3] Hebrews 9:8-9 The Holy Ghost this signifying, that the way into the holiest of all was not yet made manifest, while as the first tabernacle was yet standing: 9 Which was a figure for the time then present, in which were offered both gifts and sacrifices, that could not make him that did the service perfect, as pertaining to the conscience;

• Notice that it says in verse 8 and 9 that the “FIRST TABERNACLE” was a “FIGURE” for the time then.
• For the Old Testament, the tabernacle was there to offer “both gifts and sacrifices.”
• But those things “COUND NOT” make him that did the service perfect.
• In other words, those animal sacrifices and offerings were not forgiving their sins.

[4] Hebrews 9:10 Which stood only in meats and drinks, and divers washings, and carnal ordinances, imposed on them until the time of reformation.

• The Old Testament had all of these things they should do. Meats and drinks. Divers washings.
• Carnal or fleshly ordinances. These things weren’t saving their souls but they a FIGURE of things.
• And they were supposed to keep these “UNTIL THE TIME OF REFORMATION.”
• All of these things were done until the time of Christ because they were figures of things to come.
• The time of reformation is defined as the coming of Jesus Christ. When He comes, these things change.

[5] Hebrews 9:11-12 But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building; 12 Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.

• Jesus is THE HIGH PRIEST. He made the offering in a more perfect tabernacle.
• The tabernacles on earth were simply made with hands.
• As the high priest, he didn’t use the blood of goats and calves. He used HIS OWN BLOOD.
• And with that, HE OBTAINED ETERNAL REDEMPTION for us.
• That’s why Jesus can say, “Believe on me and you HAVE everlasting life.”
• His blood is that powerful. It’s not the blood of goats and bulls. It’s the blood of GOD that saves us.

There Are Temporary Laws Within The Bible

So, what is Hebrews Chapter 9 teaching us so far?

• It’s teaching us that there are TEMPORARY laws within the Bible.
• What’s temporary until Jesus Christ came? The tabernacle. Man built the temporary tabernacle on earth.
• There was a time in the Old Testament BEFORE that tabernacle was built.
• There was no tabernacle in the Book of Genesis. It comes in Exodus with Moses.
• Here’s the first time the word tabernacle is seen in the Bible.

[6] Exodus 25:9 According to all that I shew thee, after the pattern of the tabernacle, and the pattern of all the instruments thereof, even so shall ye make it.

• Then, you’ll see the laws about gifts, sacrifices, meats, drinks, washings, and carnal ordinances.
• All of those LAWS with the tabernacle were temporary because Hebrews 9:10 says so.
• They were imposed on them until the time of reformation, or the coming of Jesus Christ.
• So, the LAW was given to Moses and Moses gave the law to the people.

[7] John 1:17 For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.

• So, what about before Moses?
• Some so-called Christian denominations today say that we shouldn’t eat unclean meats.
• They’re getting this from the law given by Moses. “Don’t eat pork. Swine is unclean.”

[8] Leviticus 11:7 And the swine, though he divide the hoof, and be clovenfooted, yet he cheweth not the cud; he is unclean to you.

• But what about before that law given by Moses? What about Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob?
• Let’s go all the way back to NOAH. That’s long before the law was given to Moses and by Moses.

[9] Genesis 9:3 Every moving thing that liveth shall be meat for you; even as the green herb have I given you all things.

• God tells Noah that every MOVING thing shall be meat for you.
• So you have to remember where we are in the Bible. In the time of Noah, God says to eat swine.
• But when God gives Moses the law, He clearly say to not eat swine, rabbit, camel.
• He tells Moses not to eat anything from the sea that doesn’t have fins or scales.
• But before that, He tells Noah he can eat every living and moving thing.

God Gives Moses And Israel These Laws To Follow

So, God gives MOSES and the physical children of Israel all of these laws to follow.

• They went into effect right then and there when God gave Moses the law.
• There are clearly temporary laws and then there are permanent laws in the Bible.
• If you NEVER see God cancel a law in the Bible, then it is still active. You should still follow it.
• Why? Because God never canceled certain laws. Some laws are permanent and some are temporary.
• There’s an example in the very next verse of Genesis Chapter 9.

[10] Genesis 9:4 But flesh with the life thereof, which is the blood thereof, shall ye not eat.

• God commands Noah right there to not eat the flesh with blood.
• God says the same thing to Moses when He gives Moses the law.

[11] Leviticus 7:26 Moreover ye shall eat no manner of blood, whether it be of fowl or of beast, in any of your dwellings.

[12] Leviticus 17:12 Therefore I said unto the children of Israel, No soul of you shall eat blood, neither shall any stranger that sojourneth among you eat blood.

[13] Leviticus 19:26 Ye shall not eat any thing with the blood: neither shall ye use enchantment, nor observe times.

• So, we see this command to Noah, to Moses, and we see it in the New Testament as well.

[14] Acts 15:29 That ye abstain from meats offered to idols, and from blood, and from things strangled, and from fornication: from which if ye keep yourselves, ye shall do well. Fare ye well.

• Abstain from blood. So, this is a PERMANENT COMMANDMENT. We aren’t to eat blood.
• Do you see how that LAW is consistent before the law was given, it was in the law, and after Jesus came?
• Eating blood is SATANIC. Drinking blood is of the devil.
• Jesus gave wine which represents His blood. But the Catholics say they’re drinking actual blood.
• That would contradict the entire Bible from start to finish. Don’t eat and drink blood. God said so.
• What about some other examples? Here’s what God says to Noah directly.

[15] Genesis 9:6 Whoso sheddeth man’s blood, by man shall his blood be shed: for in the image of God made he man.

• That’s the DEATH PENALTY that God implements to Noah.

[16] Genesis 9:7 And you, be ye fruitful, and multiply; bring forth abundantly in the earth, and multiply therein.

• God tells Noah to be fruitful and multiply. In other words, go have children.
• Are these temporary laws or are these permanent laws? You have to know the Bible to see.
• Should the government implement the death penalty if someone murders another human?
• Should we have children as soon as we’re married and not worry about money?
• God never changes those laws within the Bible. So, yes, they are permanent laws from God.
• I want to read Hebrews Chapter 9 to you again and show you what this means.

[17] Hebrews 9:8-10 The Holy Ghost this signifying, that the way into the holiest of all was not yet made manifest, while as the first tabernacle was yet standing: 9 Which was a figure for the time then present, in which were offered both gifts and sacrifices, that could not make him that did the service perfect, as pertaining to the conscience; 10 Which stood only in meats and drinks, and divers washings, and carnal ordinances, imposed on them until the time of reformation.

• After Jesus Christ came, we don’t go to the priest in a tabernacle and give a burnt offering.
• We don’t go choose out our best lamb and take it to the Levite priest.
• CARNAL ordinances are things that deal with the flesh, OR with your body, your flesh.
• That’s the white spots on your skin, a scab on your arm, the cleanliness, and things like that.
• God’s laws are eternal BUT these things were temporary ordinances for the children of Israel.
• These were FIGURES or PICTURES of things to come from Moses to the coming of Jesus Christ.

So, there is an OLD TESTAMENT and there is a NEW TESTAMENT.

• The Old Testament is the Old Covenant. The New Testament is the New Covenant.
• The Old Testament is THE LAW given to Moses.

[18] Hebrews 9:18-20 Whereupon neither the first testament was dedicated without blood. 19 For when Moses had spoken every precept to all the people according to the law, he took the blood of calves and of goats, with water, and scarlet wool, and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book, and all the people, 20 Saying, This is the blood of the testament which God hath enjoined unto you.

• The first testament is the Old Testament that was with MOSES.
• The second testament is the New Testament that is with JESUS CHRIST.
• THE LAW is the Old Testament and GRACE AND TRUTH is the New Testament.
• The law brings death. Jesus Christ brings life. So, think of how this is divided in the Bible.

Noah’s Life Isn’t A Part Of The Law Of Moses

Genesis Chapter 9 with Noah isn’t part of the Law from Moses. Moses didn’t give that law to Noah.

• Noah was long before Moses. God commanded Noah directly.
• So, the death penalty is in Genesis Chapter 9. Be fruitful and multiply is in that chapter.
• Don’t eat blood is in that chapter. So, Genesis Chapter 9 isn’t part of the law given to Moses.
• In Hebrews Chapter 9, God says some of the laws and ordinances given to Moses are changed.
• They’re changed when Jesus Christ comes. That’s already happened. So, laws have changed.
• But, not all of them. God is ONLY changing the laws that HE says He’s changing.
• GOD NEVER SAYS that He’s doing away with the entire law. He never says ignore the Old Testament.

[19] Matthew 5:17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.

• The law hasn’t went away. Some of it has changed, but only the parts God says have changed.
• Only the ones that were a PICTURE or a FIGURE of things to come.

[20] Matthew 5:18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.

• So Jesus HIMSELF who is God says that all of the law will not pass until heaven and earth pass away.
• Some false preachers teach that we aren’t under the law. We don’t need to follow ANY of the law.
• The law is for us to follow. The law is what kills us. The law is why we need Jesus.
• We can’t keep the whole law because we aren’t perfect, but we can do our best to do what He says.
• But notice it says the WHOLE LAW isn’t going away until heaven and earth pass.
• That means it didn’t go away when Jesus came to earth. It’s still in effect. Jesus came to fulfill the law.
• Jesus came to give us the SPIRIT so we can walk in the SPIRIT and fulfill the law.

[21] Matthew 5:19 Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

• If you’re saved and are teaching that it’s okay to break God’s law, then you’ll be the least in heaven.
• If you do them and teach others to do them, you will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
• So, did Jesus say to get rid of the law? Did He say, “It’s okay, you don’t have to follow any of these?”
• Here’s an example for you today. What about marriage and divorce?
• All the way back to Genesis Chapter 2, we see this:

[22] Genesis 2:24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.

• This is before the law of Moses. A man and a woman who are married are one flesh.
• This doesn’t say we should have multiple spouses. It’s one man and one woman.
• But, in the law of Moses, it’s okay for a man to divorce his wife if she is found to be unclean.

[23] Deuteronomy 24:1 When a man hath taken a wife, and married her, and it come to pass that she find no favour in his eyes, because he hath found some uncleanness in her: then let him write her a bill of divorcement, and give it in her hand, and send her out of his house.

• And then Jesus verifies and explains this in the Gospels.

[24] Matthew 19:7-9 They say unto him, Why did Moses then command to give a writing of divorcement, and to put her away? 8 He saith unto them, Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so. 9 And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery.

• Jesus says, “From the beginning, it was not so.” That matches Genesis Chapter 2.
• In the law of Moses, the man can divorce the woman for the cause of fornication.
• If the woman said she was a virgin, then married, and then the man finds out she wasn’t:
• THEN, Jesus says fornication is a valid reason for divorce. And it’s the only reason.
• He doesn’t say adultery. He says fornication is the only valid reason for divorce. So that law stands.
• But from the beginning, if people follow God’s law, there wouldn’t be fornication.
• You wouldn’t have to even think about that. God HATES fornication. That law is still in effect.
• What about this one? Did God ever cancel this law?

[25] Exodus 20:3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me.

• Did God ever change that and say, “Well, since Jesus came, we need to respect other religions?”
• “It’s okay to worship a false god.” Did He ever say that? No, He never changed that.

[26] Leviticus 19:29 Do not prostitute thy daughter, to cause her to be a whore; lest the land fall to whoredom, and the land become full of wickedness.

• Did God change that one? NO!!! He never says that’s okay or that law changed.
• All of these LAWS are laws that God hasn’t changed. These are PERMANENT laws.
• If HE changes them somewhere in the Bible, they were TEMPORARY laws.

[27] Leviticus 18:6 None of you shall approach to any that is near of kin to him, to uncover their nakedness: I am the LORD.

• Did God say that it’s okay to marry your sister because you’re under grace now.
• So, today, is it okay to marry your sister since Jesus came and died on the cross? NO!!!
• Do you see the point today? God gave us the law to follow because it’s best for us.
• NO ONE HAS EVER BEEN ABLE TO FOLLOW THE ENTIRE LAW.
• Anyone who has made it to heaven has made it by God’s grace through faith.

God Gives Laws And Makes Them What He Wants Them To Be

So, it’s pretty easy to understand the Bible when you actually see it for what it is.

• God gives laws. If He never changes them, they’re still valid.
• If He changes them, they’re changed to the new law that He sets.
• He’s changed the carnal ordinances. The washings. Here’s an example.

[28] Exodus 30:18-19 Thou shalt also make a laver of brass, and his foot also of brass, to wash withal: and thou shalt put it between the tabernacle of the congregation and the altar, and thou shalt put water therein. 19 For Aaron and his sons shall wash their hands and their feet thereat:

[29] Exodus 30:20-21 When they go into the tabernacle of the congregation, they shall wash with water, that they die not; or when they come near to the altar to minister, to burn offering made by fire unto the LORD: 21 So they shall wash their hands and their feet, that they die not: and it shall be a statute for ever to them, even to him and to his seed throughout their generations.

• Do we need to build a tabernacle and an alter today?
• Do we need to build a laver of brass and put it between the tabernacle and altar?
• Do we need to wash our hands and feet thoroughly before we enter the tabernacle?
• But it says, “FOREVER, this shall be a statute to them.”
• JESUS CHRIST is the replacement for that. Yes, it continues forever. Why?
• Because Jesus Christ washes away all of our sin and makes us clean before God.

[30] Titus 3:5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;

[31] Ephesians 5:25-27 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; 26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, 27 That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.

• So the washings were temporary until Jesus came as He now washes us.
• The washings were a picture or figure of Jesus washing away our sins. The Bible says so.
• Let’s look at another example. Remember that God told Noah he can eat every living creature.
• God gives the law to Moses and tells the children of Israel they can’t eat unclean creatures.
• And then once Jesus Christ came, does God change that law?

[32] 1 Timothy 4:1-2 Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; 2 Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;

[33] 1 Timothy 4:3-5 Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth. 4 For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving: 5 For it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer.

• So, now, obviously, God says every creature of God is good and nothing to be refused.
• If you’re going to be perfect UNDER THE LAW, then you can’t eat unclean animals.
• Noah wasn’t given the law yet. Moses was given the law. Now that Jesus came, all animals are good.
• “Nothing to be refused IF it is received with thanksgiving. It is sanctified by the WORD OF GOD.”
• JESUS is the word of God. He came, He died for us, He arose. It is now clean through JESUS CHRIST.
• I hope you’re starting to see how Jesus Christ changed the carnal ordinances in the LAW.

God does not CHANGE the laws that aren’t in the LAW OF MOSES.

• He’s only changing the laws in the LAW OF MOSES.
• When you see one given to Adam or Noah, it doesn’t change. That wasn’t the law of Moses.
• This is what Hebrews Chapter 9 is talking about. Now, let’s look at something the dispensationalists love.

[34] Romans 6:14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.

• They love that verse, but they sure didn’t read the SCRIPTURE before and after.

[35] Romans 6:12-13 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof. 13 Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.

[36] Romans 6:14-15 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace. 15 What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid.

• Yes, it’s true that we aren’t UNDER the law. If we were, NO ONE would go to heaven.
• Moses wasn’t UNDER the law to be saved. Moses was saved by God’s grace through faith.
• Moses wasn’t perfect. HE GAVE THE LAW. But He didn’t follow the whole law.
• People love to say today: “Well, I’m not under the law. I’m under grace.”
• So now it’s okay to just go do whatever you want? NO, it’s not okay. God’s law is still there.
• If you’re saved, He’s given you the Holy Spirit within so you’ll understand more.
• When you have the Holy Spirit, you can choose to follow that SPIRIT and follow God’s laws.

You Should Want To Follow God’s Laws

They say, “Well, I don’t need to follow God’s laws to be saved.” That’s right. You don’t.

• But which ones don’t you want to follow? Which ones are so bad that you don’t want to follow?
• Is it the murder? Marrying your brother? Homosexuality? Abortion? Short hair for women?
• Coming to church? Praising God? Actually being thankful to God for the life He gave you?
• Are God’s laws so bad that we don’t want to follow them?

[37] Psalm 19:7 The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple.

• God’s law is perfect. The Old Testament or the Old Covenant is perfect. All of HIS LAWS are good.
• But all people of all time couldn’t follow the whole law all the time in their life.
• His law is perfect. It’s US who aren’t perfect. We can’t follow it and be perfect our entire life.
• That doesn’t mean we just forget about the LAW. No, we don’t forget. We remember and do our best.

[38] Hebrews 7:19 For the law made nothing perfect, but the bringing in of a better hope did; by the which we draw nigh unto God.

• There’s a point in your life where you realize that you aren’t good. You can’t be perfect.
• You can’t follow all of God’s laws. GOD’S LAWS MADE NOTHING PERFECT.
• The OLD COVENANT didn’t make anyone perfect. The offerings and sacrifices didn’t make people perfect.

[39] Hebrews 10:1 For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect.

• The laws are a SHADOW of good things to come. But, God’s laws bring death to us through OUR SIN.
• Again, it’s our fault. It’s our sin that brings death. It’s not God’s law. His law is perfect.

[40] Romans 7:9-12 For I was alive without the law once: but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died. 10 And the commandment, which was ordained to life, I found to be unto death. 11 For sin, taking occasion by the commandment, deceived me, and by it slew me. 12 Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good.

[41] Romans 7:13-14 Was then that which is good made death unto me? God forbid. But sin, that it might appear sin, working death in me by that which is good; that sin by the commandment might become exceeding sinful. 14 For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin.

• So, all of us know that we break God’s laws. We break them constantly. That brings death.
• The Old Covenant, the LAW, brings death to us. So, if you’re saved, YOU AREN’T UNDER THAT LAW.
• That law isn’t KEEPING YOU DOWN. You have something better. You have HOPE in Jesus Christ now.

[42] Romans 8:2-4 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. 3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: 4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

• If you haven’t done so lately, read the entire Book of Hebrews after this sermon.
• I can’t go over the whole book, but I want you to take what you learn today and read that book.
• In the Old Testament, you had priests that would receive burnt offerings for sin.
• In the New Testament, JESUS CHRIST is the HIGH PRIEST. He forgives your sin.
• God has always been the one that forgives sin. The priests couldn’t forgive sin.

[43] Hebrews 7:11 If therefore perfection were by the Levitical priesthood, (for under it the people received the law,) what further need was there that another priest should rise after the order of Melchisedec, and not be called after the order of Aaron?

• The priests in the Old Testament were just a FIGURE of things to come with JESUS CHRIST.
• Jesus is the TRUE PRIEST who actually forgives sin.
• That verse right there says, “If the Levite priests could forgive sin, then why would Jesus need to come?”

[44] Hebrews 7:12 For the priesthood being changed, there is made of necessity a change also of the law.

• Some religions today will say that God’s laws never changed. That verse says different.
• When the priesthood changed, the LAW also changed. We don’t do all of those animal sacrifices.
• The PASSOVER is an example.

[45] Exodus 12:11-12 And thus shall ye eat it; with your loins girded, your shoes on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and ye shall eat it in haste: it is the LORD’S passover. 12 For I will pass through the land of Egypt this night, and will smite all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment: I am the LORD.

[46] Exodus 12:13-14 And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye are: and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you, when I smite the land of Egypt. 14 And this day shall be unto you for a memorial; and ye shall keep it a feast to the LORD throughout your generations; ye shall keep it a feast by an ordinance for ever.

• The Old Testament, the Law of Moses, tells us that the PASSOVER FEAST shall be kept FOREVER.
• So, shouldn’t we be recognizing the PASSOVER FEAST today? Today counts in forever, right?
• The PASSOVER was a PICTURE OF JESUS CHRIST. The blood of the LAMB saved those people.

[47] 1 Corinthians 5:7-8 Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us: 8 Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness; but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.

• The New Testament tells us: “Therefore LET US KEEP THE FEAST.”
• But we have to understand that Jesus is the LAMB OF GOD. Jesus HIMSELF changed the PASSOVER.
• On the PASSOVER before He died on the CROSS, Jesus ate the Passover meal.
• Then, He changed that PASSOVER MEAL right then and there with the Lord’s Supper.

[48] Matthew 26:26-28 And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body. 27 And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it; 28 For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.

• The Lord’s Supper is a replacement for the PASSOVER because Jesus changed it.
• The original Passover was a PICTURE OR FIGURE of things to come. JESUS CHRIST!!!
• So, do we keep the PASSOVER today? Yes, we do with the Lord’s Supper.
• We haven’t broken that original law that says to keep the PASSOVER by an ordinance FOREVER.
• But notice that Jesus says, “FOR THIS IS MY BLOOD OF THE NEW TESTAMENT.”
• His blood is shed for the remission of sins.

Can You Keep The Entire Law And Make It To Heaven On Your Own?

The Old Testament is this: “Keep the entire law and you will be righteous and make it to heaven.”

• You can establish your own righteousness through the Old Covenant. God says so in the Bible.
• But, if you’re living and have a brain, you’ll quickly find that you break the law often.
• So, what do you do? You go to God and you say, “God, I can’t do this. I can’t follow the Old Covenant.”
• “God, I’ve already broken your Old Covenant.” God knew you would break it.

[49] Hebrews 8:6-7 But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises. 7 For if that first covenant had been faultless, then should no place have been sought for the second.

• The New Testament or the New Covenant is a BETTER COVENANT established upon better promises.
• God’s Old Covenant was perfect and is perfect. But, the problem is us. We have fault.
• That makes the fault in the Old Covenant because we can’t keep our side of the deal.

[50] Hebrews 8:8-9 For finding fault with them, he saith, Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah: 9 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they continued not in my covenant, and I regarded them not, saith the Lord.

[51] Hebrews 8:10-11 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people: 11 And they shall not teach every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for all shall know me, from the least to the greatest.

[52] Hebrews 8:12-13 For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more. 13 In that he saith, A new covenant, he hath made the first old. Now that which decayeth and waxeth old is ready to vanish away.

• So, understand today that NO ONE has ever been saved through the law. NO ONE.
• Jesus Christ is the only man to ever live on this earth that was perfect. He doesn’t need a SAVIOR.
• He has HIS OWN righteousness. That’s we need Him and His blood to save us from our sins.
• That’s why we need HIM to wash us from our sin, to cleanse us from our sin.
• Just because someone lived before Jesus died on the cross, that doesn’t mean His blood didn’t save them.
• Abraham lived before Jesus died on the cross. Abraham was saved by God’s grace through faith.
• Abraham wasn’t a perfect man who never sinned. He was saved through FAITH.
• All the way back to Genesis:

[53] Genesis 15:6 And he believed in the LORD; and he counted it to him for righteousness.

[54] James 2:23 And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God.

• Moses knew what the PASSOVER meant. He knew it was a picture of the SAVIOR God would send for HIM.
• He knew it hadn’t yet happened. But He trusted that God would send HIS SON one day for HIS SINS.
• Yes, Moses knew Jesus. Moses talked with HIM face to face.

Before we end, I want to answer one more question from the beginning of the sermon.

• What about circumcision? Do we need to keep that law today?

[55] Genesis 17:10-11 This is my covenant, which ye shall keep, between me and you and thy seed after thee; Every man child among you shall be circumcised. 11 And ye shall circumcise the flesh of your foreskin; and it shall be a token of the covenant betwixt me and you.

• So that was given to Abraham. But it was also given to Moses. And Moses almost died over that.
• Hebrews Chapter 9 talks about carnal or fleshly ordinances that changed with Jesus.
• That law was given directly to the children of Israel. Does the New Testament change that law?
• Remember, Jesus is a picture of those fleshly laws. When He came, they were changed.

[56] Colossians 2:10-12 And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power: 11 In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ: 12 Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.

• It says right there, “In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made WITHOUT HANDS.”
• But watch what the next verses say because I want you to see this today.

[57] Colossians 2:13-15 And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses; 14 Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross; 15 And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.

• He blotted out the handwriting of ordinances; the carnal ordinances that we’ve been talking about.
• We keep that LAW about circumcision not through the actual act but through JESUS CHRIST.
• Jesus circumcises the flesh of our body from our SOUL and SPIRIT. They are separate now.

The Laws Were Contrary To Us So Jesus Fulfilled The Law For Us

The laws were contrary to us. JESUS TOOK IT OUT OF THE WAY. We couldn’t keep them all.

• Jesus says, “Look, these people can’t do this. So I’m going to take those laws for them.”
• And what did He do? He took them and HE NAILED THEM TO THE CROSS. It says so right there.
• Why? So you and I can be saved.
• So all people of all time can be saved because no one can follow the whole law.
• But does that mean we just don’t do those things? No!!!

We need to understand which laws are still in effect and which laws have changed with Jesus.

• Jesus came so that we could FULFILL all those laws. I hope that makes more sense to you now.

[58] Matthew 5:17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.

• Jesus came so we could fulfill the PASSOVER without sacrificing a lamb every year.
• Jesus came so we could fulfill the law of circumcision.
• Jesus came so we could fulfill the laws of washing and cleansing.
• Jesus came to fulfill the SABBATH DAY of rest. He is our rest.

[59] Matthew 11:28-30 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

• We don’t have to observe the SABBATH DAY of rest since Jesus came. It changed with Jesus.

[60] Colossians 2:16-17 Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days: 17 Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ.

• Do you see why that SCRIPTURE makes sense now? All of those things were fleshly ordinances.
• Meat, drink, holy days, new moons, sabbath days. They were all a shadow of things to come.

I hope you now see how Jesus came to fulfill the law for us.

• We can’t follow all of those laws so Jesus said, “I’ll do it for you.”
• And all you have to do is “BELIEVE ON ME” to save you. And all those laws are fulfilled.
• For the others that we still can’t keep, He’s given us the Holy Spirit to help us fulfill those.
• Yes, we have choices every day. He doesn’t want us sinning against Him.
• But if we do, He says, “Your soul is forgiven already. Your soul is separate from your flesh now.”
• “Your soul is saved. You HAVE eternal life.”

Today, put all your trust on Jesus to save you. Don’t make it about YOUR GOODNESS.

• You don’t have any. You might think you do, but God says different.
• Trust in HIM ALONE right now, and in a moment, you’re saved. It’s all about HIM.
• HE IS THE SAVIOR.
