[2] The title of the sermon today is “THE LORD’S SUPPER PART 1.”
The Lord’s Supper Is Shown In Matthew, Mark, and Luke
- We’re going to take a close look at the Lord’s Supper today according to Scripture.
- The Lord’s Supper is given in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke.
- Matthew Chapter 26, Mark Chapter 14, and Luke Chapter 22.
- The Lord’s Supper is also discussed in 1 Corinthians Chapter 11.
- We’re going to look at all of those closely today.
- Let’s start with Matthew Chapter 26 verse 17.
[3] Matthew 26:17 Now the first day of the feast of unleavened bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying unto him, Where wilt thou that we prepare for thee to eat the passover?
- So, there’s something VERY important I want you to see here.
- The PASSOVER hasn’t yet happened, right? They are preparing to eat the passover.
- This can be confusing because the days of unleavened bread follow the passover.
- It says, “Now the first day of the feast of unleavened bread the disciples came to Jesus.”
- Well, the PASSOVER is the first day of unleavened bread but not the 7 days of unleavened bread.
I want to give you the correct timing of the PASSOVER and DAYS OF UNLEAVENED BREAD.
- You need to understand this so verses like Matthew 26:17 don’t confuse you.
- Because it can be confusing. I’ve been confused myself over this, but we study the Scriptures.
- Why is this important to learning about the Lord’s Supper? The Passover is related to the Lord’s Supper.
- The Lord’s Supper is about to happen in Matthew 26 as they are preparing for the Passover.
- Let’s go back to the Old Testament and learn about the Passover and the Days of Unleavened Bread.
[4] Exodus 12:1-2 And the LORD spake unto Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt, saying, 2 This month shall be unto you the beginning of months: it shall be the first month of the year to you.
- So, we’re in the first month that God designated as the first month. And it’s not January.
- It was more like March/April timeframe or our Spring time frame.
[5] Exodus 13:4 This day came ye out in the month Abib.
- The first month is called Abib in Exodus and Nisan in later books of the Bible.
[6] Esther 3:7 In the first month, that is, the month Nisan, in the twelfth year of king Ahasuerus, they cast Pur, that is, the lot, before Haman from day to day, and from month to month, to the twelfth month, that is, the month Adar.
- So, we know that the Passover takes places in the first month.
[7] Exodus 12:3 Speak ye unto all the congregation of Israel, saying, In the tenth day of this month they shall take to them every man a lamb, according to the house of their fathers, a lamb for an house:
- In the tenth day of the first month, they are to take a lamb for a house.
- In other words, each house will partake of the PASSOVER lamb.
- Each house will begin to prepare for the PASSOVER on the tenth of the month by taking a lamb.
[8] Exodus 12:4 And if the household be too little for the lamb, let him and his neighbour next unto his house take it according to the number of the souls; every man according to his eating shall make your count for the lamb.
- If the household is too small for a full lamb, bring the neighbors.
[9] Exodus 12:5 Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of the first year: ye shall take it out from the sheep, or from the goats:
- A MALE of the first year. No blemish. Take it from the sheep or the goats.
[10] Exodus 12:6 And ye shall keep it up until the fourteenth day of the same month: and the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it in the evening.
- So, they were to keep the lamb until the 14th of the first month.
- And they were to kill the passover lamb in the evening.
[11] Exodus 12:7-8 And they shall take of the blood, and strike it on the two side posts and on the upper door post of the houses, wherein they shall eat it. 8 And they shall eat the flesh in that night, roast with fire, and unleavened bread; and with bitter herbs they shall eat it.
- They were to eat the meat of the passover lamb that night.
- Please keep in mind throughout all of this that JESUS represents the PASSOVER LAMB.
- ROAST IT WITH FIRE. Eat it with unleavened bread and bitter herbs.
Roasted With Fire? The Passover Lamb?
[12] Exodus 12:9 Eat not of it raw, nor sodden at all with water, but roast with fire; his head with his legs, and with the purtenance thereof.
- How was it to be cooked? ROASTED WITH FIRE. Not in water.
- And you eat the whole lamb: head, legs, and everything.
[13] Exodus 12:10 And ye shall let nothing of it remain until the morning; and that which remaineth of it until the morning ye shall burn with fire.
- To recap, kill the lamb at evening. Blood on the upper door posts where it is being eaten.
- Cook it by roasting it with fire. Eat the meat of the lamb that same night.
- Eat it with unleavened bread and bitter herbs.
[14] Exodus 12:11 And thus shall ye eat it; with your loins girded, your shoes on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and ye shall eat it in haste: it is the LORD’S passover.
- Have your loins girded, shoes on your feet, and staff in your hand. Be ready. Eat it in haste.
- That might remind you of Ephesians Chapter 6.
[15] Ephesians 6:14-16 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; 15 And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.
- Do you see the comparison there? They were to gird up their loins, shoes on, staff in hand. Be ready to go.
[16] Exodus 12:12-13 For I will pass through the land of Egypt this night, and will smite all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment: I am the LORD. 13 And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye are: and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you, when I smite the land of Egypt.
- The blood of the PASSOVER LAMB will protect them from God’s wrath.
- He says, “I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you.”
- Same thing with the blood of Jesus Christ. You either have it or you don’t.
[17] Exodus 12:14 And this day shall be unto you for a memorial; and ye shall keep it a feast to the LORD throughout your generations; ye shall keep it a feast by an ordinance for ever.
- Notice it says THIS DAY shall be unto you a memorial. And it is a feast because you’re eating.
- The PASSOVER occurs on ONE DAY.
- And remember, Jesus came and is now the PASSOVER LAMB.
- We are to observe the passover lamb forever.
[18] Exodus 12:15 Seven days shall ye eat unleavened bread; even the first day ye shall put away leaven out of your houses: for whosoever eateth leavened bread from the first day until the seventh day, that soul shall be cut off from Israel.
- So now, we’ve moved to the FEAST OF UNLEAVENED BREAD. This feast is for 7 days.
- This doesn’t include the PASSOVER DAY. No leavened bread during these 7 days.
[19] Exodus 12:16 And in the first day there shall be an holy convocation, and in the seventh day there shall be an holy convocation to you; no manner of work shall be done in them, save that which every man must eat, that only may be done of you.
- In the first day of unleavened bread, there is a SABBATH in which no work is done except eating.
- Same thing for the seventh day of unleavened bread. Another SABBATH with no work except eating.
[20] Exodus 12:17 And ye shall observe the feast of unleavened bread; for in this selfsame day have I brought your armies out of the land of Egypt: therefore shall ye observe this day in your generations by an ordinance for ever.
- They are to observe the feast of unleavened bread forever.
- The feast of unleavened bread starts at that Passover meal when unleavened bread is eaten.
- This starts at even. Watch the next verse.
[21] Exodus 12:18 In the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month at even, ye shall eat unleavened bread, until the one and twentieth day of the month at even.
- So, look, the timing of days in the Bible is very confusing to me.
- It’s confusing because God measures days differently than we measure days.
- At evening or about 6:00 PM, evening or night begins. That makes sense.
[22] Genesis 1:5 And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.
[23] Genesis 1:8 And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day.
[24] Genesis 1:13 And the evening and the morning were the third day.
[25] Genesis 1:19 And the evening and the morning were the fourth day.
- The whole point of those verses is to show that the EVENING is first and morning is SECOND.
- A day is defined as the evening FIRST and the morning second.
- There’s 12 hours of night or darkness and then 12 hours of day or light.
- 6:00 PM to 6:00 AM is night. 12:00 AM is MIDNIGHT because it’s in the MIDDLE of night.
- 6:00 AM is the beginning of the “DAY” as we see in Genesis 1:5 because it’s light.
- 12:00 PM is the middle of the “DAY.” And 6:00 PM is the end of the day and start of the next day.
The Passover = 14th Day Of The First Month
So, the point of all this is so you can see that the Passover is on the 14th day of the month.
- The Passover begins at evening or 6:00 PM at the end of the 13th day.
- The days of unleavened bread begin at the end of the 14th day at even or 6:00 PM.
- The days of unleavened bread last for 7 days NOT including the Passover.
[26] Exodus 12:19-20 Seven days shall there be no leaven found in your houses: for whosoever eateth that which is leavened, even that soul shall be cut off from the congregation of Israel, whether he be a stranger, or born in the land. 20 Ye shall eat nothing leavened; in all your habitations shall ye eat unleavened bread.
- No leaven in your houses for 7 full days. No eating of leavened bread at all for 7 days.
- The Passover is on the 14th day. The days of unleavened bread start at the end of the Passover Day.
- The days of unleavened bread are completed on the 21st of the month and last 7 full days.
[27] Leviticus 23:4-8 These are the feasts of the LORD, even holy convocations, which ye shall proclaim in their seasons. 5 In the fourteenth day of the first month at even is the LORD’S passover. 6 And on the fifteenth day of the same month is the feast of unleavened bread unto the LORD: seven days ye must eat unleavened bread. 7 In the first day ye shall have an holy convocation: ye shall do no servile work therein. 8 But ye shall offer an offering made by fire unto the LORD seven days: in the seventh day is an holy convocation: ye shall do no servile work therein.
- So, this proves the Passover is ONE DAY on the 14th day of the month at EVEN. That’s the start of the day.
- The 15th day of the month is a SABBATH day starting FEAST OF UNLEAVENED BREAD.
- It doesn’t matter which day the 15th falls on. It’s a SABBATH. It’s referred to as a HIGH DAY in the Bible.
- And then the final day of UNLEAVENED BREAD is another Sabbath Day.
- It doesn’t matter which day of the week it falls on. It’s a Sabbath Day. It’s a high day.
So, I want to show you something else that proves the Passover is the 14th and the Passover is NOT the feast of unleavened bread.
- Yes, unleavened bread is eaten with the Passover meal. But it’s not the FEAST of Unleavened Bread.
- Let’s go back to Exodus Chapter 12 verse 21 and continue.
[28] Exodus 12:21 Then Moses called for all the elders of Israel, and said unto them, Draw out and take you a lamb according to your families, and kill the passover.
- Now, Moses is giving them instructions based on what the Lord told him to do.
[29] Exodus 12:22 And ye shall take a bunch of hyssop, and dip it in the blood that is in the bason, and strike the lintel and the two side posts with the blood that is in the bason; and none of you shall go out at the door of his house until the morning.
- Notice what he says right there at the end of the verse.
- “NONE OF YOU SHALL GO OUT AT THE DOOR OF HIS HOUSE UNTIL THE MORNING.”
- They aren’t going to leave their homes until the morning.
- And remember the evening and night of the 14th is from 6:00 PM to 6:00 AM.
- So obviously, they didn’t leave Egypt on the Passover night because they stayed inside.
- And you might say, “Well, it doesn’t say that specifically.” Bear with me for a few minutes.
[30] Exodus 12:23 For the LORD will pass through to smite the Egyptians; and when he seeth the blood upon the lintel, and on the two side posts, the LORD will pass over the door, and will not suffer the destroyer to come in unto your houses to smite you.
- On the night of the 14th, God is going to PASSOVER the homes with blood upon the lintel.
[31] Exodus 12:24-25 And ye shall observe this thing for an ordinance to thee and to thy sons for ever. 25 And it shall come to pass, when ye be come to the land which the LORD will give you, according as he hath promised, that ye shall keep this service.
- They should continue to keep the PASSOVER no matter where they live.
[32] Exodus 12:26-27 And it shall come to pass, when your children shall say unto you, What mean ye by this service? 27 That ye shall say, It is the sacrifice of the LORD’S passover, who passed over the houses of the children of Israel in Egypt, when he smote the Egyptians, and delivered our houses. And the people bowed the head and worshipped.
- Moses gave the children of Israel instructions right here at this point to observe this first PASSOVER.
- Did they do what Moses commanded? Let’s see. Did they stay in their houses until morning?
[33] Exodus 12:28 And the children of Israel went away, and did as the LORD had commanded Moses and Aaron, so did they.
- They did what God commanded. They did what Moses instructed them to do.
- They stayed in their homes that night and didn’t come out until morning.
- So, let’s see what happened next.
The Lord Smote All The Firstborn In The Land Of Egypt At Midnight
[34] Exodus 12:29 And it came to pass, that at midnight the LORD smote all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh that sat on his throne unto the firstborn of the captive that was in the dungeon; and all the firstborn of cattle.
- Notice that the LORD smote all the firstborn in the land of Egypt at MIDNIGHT.
- MIDNIGHT equals the middle of the night. 12:00 AM on the Passover Day.
[35] Exodus 12:30-31 And Pharaoh rose up in the night, he, and all his servants, and all the Egyptians; and there was a great cry in Egypt; for there was not a house where there was not one dead. 31 And he called for Moses and Aaron by night, and said, Rise up, and get you forth from among my people, both ye and the children of Israel; and go, serve the LORD, as ye have said.
- Moses never saw Pharaoh ever again and he didn’t see him at this time.
- They didn’t leave their homes. But Pharaoh tells them to leave.
- I’ll show you how we know they didn’t leave Egypt on the Passover or 14th of the month.
[36] Exodus 12:32-33 Also take your flocks and your herds, as ye have said, and be gone; and bless me also. 33 And the Egyptians were urgent upon the people, that they might send them out of the land in haste; for they said, We be all dead men.
- The Egyptians are urging them to please get out of here before God kills all us.
[37] Exodus 12:34 And the people took their dough before it was leavened, their kneadingtroughs being bound up in their clothes upon their shoulders.
- And you might say, look, they’re leaving Egypt on the Passover.
- But the Scriptures tell us they didn’t leave yet.
[38] Exodus 12:35 And the children of Israel did according to the word of Moses; and they borrowed of the Egyptians jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and raiment:
- Do you see where it says they “DID ACCORDING TO THE WORD OF MOSES.”
[39] Exodus 12:37 And the children of Israel journeyed from Rameses to Succoth, about six hundred thousand on foot that were men, beside children.
- The Israelites came out of their homes the next morning.
- They gathered everything together that they needed.
- RAMESES is in Egypt there in verse 37. They leave Egypt and go to Succoth.
- Let’s keep reading. Remember, we’re learning about the Passover, which is related to the Lord’s Supper.
[40] Exodus 12:38-39 And a mixed multitude went up also with them; and flocks, and herds, even very much cattle. 39 And they baked unleavened cakes of the dough which they brought forth out of Egypt, for it was not leavened; because they were thrust out of Egypt, and could not tarry, neither had they prepared for themselves any victual.
- They had to pack up everything they had and get ready to leave.
- They didn’t know they were going to be leaving. That takes some time.
[41] Exodus 12:40-41 Now the sojourning of the children of Israel, who dwelt in Egypt, was four hundred and thirty years. 41 And it came to pass at the end of the four hundred and thirty years, even the selfsame day it came to pass, that all the hosts of the LORD went out from the land of Egypt.
- When did the Children of Israel leave the land of Egypt?
- It wasn’t on the Passover. It didn’t happen before 6:00 PM on the 14th of the month.
- It says in verse 41, “EVEN THE SELFSAME DAY IT CAME TO PASS” that they left the land of Egypt.
- Which selfsame day? The day when it reached 430 years exactly.
- Watch what it says next.
[42] Exodus 12:42 It is a night to be much observed unto the LORD for bringing them out from the land of Egypt: this is that night of the LORD to be observed of all the children of Israel in their generations.
- Do you see that it says “NIGHT” is when they came out of the land of Egypt?
- We know that it wasn’t on the same night as the Passover. How do we know that?
[43] Numbers 33:1-3 These are the journeys of the children of Israel, which went forth out of the land of Egypt with their armies under the hand of Moses and Aaron. 2 And Moses wrote their goings out according to their journeys by the commandment of the LORD: and these are their journeys according to their goings out. 3 And they departed from Rameses in the first month, on the fifteenth day of the first month; on the morrow after the passover the children of Israel went out with an high hand in the sight of all the Egyptians.
- So, it’s obvious they left on the FIFTEENTH DAY of the first month. It says so in verse 3.
[44] Numbers 33:4-5 For the Egyptians buried all their firstborn, which the LORD had smitten among them: upon their gods also the LORD executed judgments. 5 And the children of Israel removed from Rameses, and pitched in Succoth.
- I just want you to see how this can be a little confusing with the days from evening to evening.
- But you can know that the PASSOVER is NOT the FEAST OF UNLEAVENED BREAD.
- Watch this from Exodus Chapter 12 again verse 17.
[45] Exodus 12:17 And ye shall observe the feast of unleavened bread; for in this selfsame day have I brought your armies out of the land of Egypt: therefore shall ye observe this day in your generations by an ordinance for ever.
- We know from Numbers that they left Egypt on the 15th. That’s the start of the feast of unleavened bread.
- Why is all this important? What’s the point I’m trying to make. Here’s the point:
- God gave us all this timing in the Bible so we’re going to learn it and find out why it’s important.
- Okay, now that we understand that, let’s go back to Matthew Chapter 26 verse 17.
The Passover Hasn’t Happened Yet In This Scripture
[46] Matthew 26:17 Now the first day of the feast of unleavened bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying unto him, Where wilt thou that we prepare for thee to eat the passover?
- So, do you see now how this verse can be confusing. That’s why we need to study.
- The PASSOVER hasn’t happened yet. They are preparing for the Passover.
- BUT, they do eat unleavened bread during the Passover.
- Understand that today and don’t let this verse confuse you.
- The actual FEAST OF UNLEAVENED BREAD doesn’t start until after the Passover.
- But the Jews started to call the PASSOVER the FEAST OF UNLEAVENED BREAD.
[47] Matthew 26:18-19 And he said, Go into the city to such a man, and say unto him, The Master saith, My time is at hand; I will keep the passover at thy house with my disciples. 19 And the disciples did as Jesus had appointed them; and they made ready the passover.
- So, obviously, Jesus is going to keep God’s commandment to observe the Passover.
- He’s going to keep the passover at this man’s house with his disciples.
- Remember, they are to keep in their own homes according to Exodus.
[48] Matthew 26:20 Now when the even was come, he sat down with the twelve.
- Does this make more sense now? “NOW WHEN THE EVEN WAS COME.”
- Hey, it’s 6:00 PM now. The PASSOVER is here. It wasn’t yet there. Now it is. Let’s observe the Passover.
[49] Matthew 26:21-22 And as they did eat, he said, Verily I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me. 22 And they were exceeding sorrowful, and began every one of them to say unto him, Lord, is it I?
- And notice, there’s going to be one who betrays Jesus because he doesn’t believe Jesus is the Savior.
[50] Matthew 26:23-24 And he answered and said, He that dippeth his hand with me in the dish, the same shall betray me. 24 The Son of man goeth as it is written of him: but woe unto that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! it had been good for that man if he had not been born.
- So, whose going to betray Jesus? Let’s find out.
[51] Matthew 26:25 Then Judas, which betrayed him, answered and said, Master, is it I? He said unto him, Thou hast said.
- Judas already betrayed Jesus. He had already made the deal.
- And Jesus straight up tells him that YES, it’s you Judas Iscariot.
- And then watch because this is where the Lord’s Supper is initiated.
- And watch what’s happening when Jesus initiates the Lord’s Supper.
[52] Matthew 26:26 And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body.
- So, they are already eating the PASSOVER meal.
Steps To The Passover Meal = The Lord’s Supper
STEP 1: Jesus takes bread. What kind of bread? This is obviously unleavened bread.
- Well, what’s that? What’s unleavened bread? It’s not raised by leaven which can be barm or yeast.
- It’s flat bread. It’s not raised bread.
- What does Jesus do next?
STEP 2: He blesses the bread. So we need to make sure we use unleavened bread.
- We need to make sure we bless the bread.
- Pray for the bread.
STEP 3: Jesus breaks the bread. Jesus gives it to the disciples.
- So we need to actually BREAK the bread as Jesus did.
And then we have a small problem. We don’t have Jesus to hand it to us.
- So we’ll pass the basket of unleavened bread around.
- Take one of the pieces of unleavened bread out of the basket.
- Then we’ll break the unleavened bread. Why? Let’s see.
- Jesus says in verse 26 at the end, “TAKE, EAT; THIS IS MY BODY.”
- That broken piece of bread represents the broken body of Jesus Christ.
[53] Matthew 26:27 And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it;
- So Jesus takes a cup of something. It doesn’t tell us what it is yet.
- But He takes it, give it to them, and tells them to drink all of it. Why? And what is this?
[54] Matthew 26:28 For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.
- This is a VERY important verse. You need to notice what it says.
- “For this is MY BLOOD OF THE NEW TESTAMENT.” It’s shed for many for the remission of sins.
- The New Covenant means the blood of Jesus Christ forgives us of our sins.
- There is no longer an animal sacrifice. Jesus is the sacrifice.
- So, what’s in the cup that Jesus gives them to drink? It’s not his actual blood. The next verse tells us.
[55] Matthew 26:29 But I say unto you, I will not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.
- The drink Jesus gives them is the fruit of the vine. It’s juice of grapes.
- It’s definitely not high alcohol content, fermented wine.
- It’s juice of grapes which is called wine in the Bible. We did a whole sermon on that.
- So, the broken body of Jesus is represented by the broken and unleavened bread.
- And the spilled blood of Jesus is represented by the fruit of the vine, grape juice.
[56] Matthew 26:30 And when they had sung an hymn, they went out into the mount of Olives.
- They are finished with the Lord’s Supper. They sing a hymn together. They go out.
- And remember the timing here. We’re on PASSOVER day. The night. The day begins in the evening.
- Jesus implements the Lord’s Supper on the first night of Passover.
- They then go to Gethsemane. Jesus goes to pray. The disciples fall asleep. Happens a second time.
- Jesus prays again. Disciples are sleeping again a third time.
[57] Matthew 26:45-47 Then cometh he to his disciples, and saith unto them, Sleep on now, and take your rest: behold, the hour is at hand, and the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. 46 Rise, let us be going: behold, he is at hand that doth betray me. 47 And while he yet spake, lo, Judas, one of the twelve, came, and with him a great multitude with swords and staves, from the chief priests and elders of the people.
- They come to take Jesus. Peter cuts one of their ears off. Jesus tells them not to fight.
- Jesus tells them He doesn’t need any help. He could just pray the Father and have 12 legion of angels.
[58] Matthew 26:56 But all this was done, that the scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled. Then all the disciples forsook him, and fled.
- They all forsook Jesus and ran away.
[59] Matthew 26:57 And they that had laid hold on Jesus led him away to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were assembled.
- They were already there waiting for Jesus.
- Peter denies Jesus three times.
[60] Matthew 27:1-2 When the morning was come, all the chief priests and elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death: 2 And when they had bound him, they led him away, and delivered him to Pontius Pilate the governor.
- So now, we’re at the morning of the 14th or the Passover morning.
- Judas Iscariot hangs himself that day. Jesus is brought before Pilate.
[61] Matthew 27:11 And Jesus stood before the governor: and the governor asked him, saying, Art thou the King of the Jews? And Jesus said unto him, Thou sayest.
- Pontius Pilate’s wife has a dream and warns Pilate to let JESUS go.
[62] Matthew 27:22-23 Pilate saith unto them, What shall I do then with Jesus which is called Christ? They all say unto him, Let him be crucified. 23 And the governor said, Why, what evil hath he done? But they cried out the more, saying, Let him be crucified.
- Jesus didn’t do anything wrong as we all know. The innocent little lambs didn’t do anything wrong either.
[63] Matthew 27:24 When Pilate saw that he could prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see ye to it.
- Pilate says to the people, “Hey, look, I’ve got nothing to do with this. This is your fault.”
[64] Matthew 27:25 Then answered all the people, and said, His blood be on us, and on our children.
- They knew what they were doing. The Jews today who practice Judaism says the same thing today.
- They say Jesus is a false Messiah. They hate Jesus.
- Then Barabbas is released and Jesus is scourged or whipped and lashed.
- Soldiers then take Jesus into the common hall. Soldiers strip Jesus and put on a scarlet robe.
- Then they put a crown of thorns on His head, reed in His right hand, and they bow to Him.
- They mock Him and act like it’s funny. They spit on Him. They take the reed and hit Him on the head.
- They took the robe off. Put his own clothing back on.
- And then they take Jesus away to be crucified. Simon, a man of Cyrene, bears the cross of Jesus.
Golgotha = Calvary = Place Of The Skull
They then take Jesus to Golgotha or Calvary (same place). It’s called the place of the skull.
- They give Jesus vinegar to drink mingled with gall. Jesus tasted it but didn’t drink it.
- And then they crucified Jesus. Took his clothing and casted lots for it.
- They all sat and watched Him there on the cross.
- They wrote: “THIS IS JESUS KING OF THE JEWS” above His head.
There were 2 thieves there. One on the right and one of the left.
- People passed by and shook their heads at Jesus and said bad things to Jesus.
- They told Him to save Himself and mocked Him. “Come down from the cross!!!”
- “He can save others, but He can’t save Himself!!!” Do you remember what happens next?
- Watch this so we get the order of everything correct.
[65] Matthew 27:45 Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour.
- I believe this means SIX HOURS from the 6:00 AM morning light.
- So from 12:00 PM (the sixth hour of daylight) to 3:00 PM (the ninth hour of daylight), there was darkness over ALL THE LAND.
- And the reason I think it’s 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM is because it mentioned morning had already happened.
- So, we’re still on the 14th of the month or PASSOVER DAY.
- Jesus hasn’t died yet. It’s about 3:00 PM on Passover Day or the 14th of the first month.
- Jesus dies after the 3 hours of darkness.
[66] Matthew 27:50 Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost.
- So Jesus dies about 3:00 PM on the Passover. It’s not yet evening.
[67] Matthew 27:57-58 When the even was come, there came a rich man of Arimathaea, named Joseph, who also himself was Jesus’ disciple: 58 He went to Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded the body to be delivered.
- We now see we’re at evening on the PASSOVER. When it hits 6:00 PM, it’s the 15th of the month.
- The 15th of the month is the first day of the feast of unleavened bread.
[68] Matthew 27:59-60 And when Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, 60 And laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock: and he rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulchre, and departed.
- The body of Jesus is taken and buried in a new tomb on the evening of the 14th.
- I’m not 100% sure if this happened before the 6:00 PM mark. It doesn’t say for sure.
- But, I think this Scripture might mean that Jesus was buried when the 6 PM mark hit.
- Why? Because the Jews didn’t want to do any work on the Sabbath.
[69] Matthew 27:62-63 Now the next day, that followed the day of the preparation, the chief priests and Pharisees came together unto Pilate, 63 Saying, Sir, we remember that that deceiver said, while he was yet alive, After three days I will rise again.
- This is the 15th of the month. The next day AFTER the day of preparation.
- That’s the evening of the next day AFTER the daylight. That’s after 6:00 PM.
- So, this is just a few hours after Jesus has died on the cross.
[70] Matthew 27:64-66 Command therefore that the sepulchre be made sure until the third day, lest his disciples come by night, and steal him away, and say unto the people, He is risen from the dead: so the last error shall be worse than the first. 65 Pilate said unto them, Ye have a watch: go your way, make it as sure as ye can. 66 So they went, and made the sepulchre sure, sealing the stone, and setting a watch.
- They went and checked the tomb. Made sure Jesus was there. Sealed the stone and set a watch.
- Or, in other words, they set guards there to watch the tomb.
- The 15th is automatically a Sabbath day because it’s the first day of the unleavened bread feast.
The Timeline Of The Crucifixion Of Jesus Christ
Quick recap of the timeline:
- Jesus dies at about 3:00 PM on the 14th. It’s still day time when Jesus dies.
- He’s taken at around 6:00 PM that same day, which turns to the 15th.
- He’s buried on the 15th in the tomb. We know that Jesus is buried for 3 days and 3 nights.
[71] Matthew 12:40 For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale’s belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
- If Jesus dies on the 14th, that would be Day 1.
- The night of the 15th is Night 1. The day of the 15th is Day 2.
- The night of the 16th is Night 2. The day of the 16th is Day 3.
- The night of the 17th is Night 3. We now have 3 days and 3 nights.
- So, we would expect Jesus to rise on the Day of the 17th.
- Let’s keep going in the Book of Matthew.
[72] Matthew 28:1 In the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre.
- Notice what it says right there. In the end of the Sabbath. This is the normal Sabbath day for the week.
- When is the normal Sabbath Day for the week in the Bible?
- This is Friday night at 6 PM. That is when the day rolls over to Saturday, which is the normal Sabbath.
- The Sabbath has ended according to verse 1 on the screen.
- It’s dawning toward the first day of the week. This means the sun is starting to come up.
- The first day OR first light of the week is coming. Sunday is the first day of the week.
[73] Matthew 28:5-6 And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified. 6 He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.
