[2] The title of the sermon: “A BIBLE STUDY ON PROPHETS.”
Let’s Look Up Words Related To Prophet
- Today, I want to do a Bible study on prophets within the Bible.
- The first thing we always do is look up all the words related to prophets within the Bible.
- Then, we allow the Scriptures to show us things and teach us things.
- For this study, I used the following words within the King James Bible.
[3]
- Prophet
- Prophetess
- Prophet’s
- Prophets
- Seer
- Seer’s
- Seers
- This is a huge topic within the Bible. 522 matches in 472 verses.
[4]
- So, we see that the word prophet gives us 242 matches. Prophets matches 239 times.
- Then we see the word SEER 21 times. Prophetess 8 times. Seers 6 times. Prophet’s 4 times.
- And seer’s 2 times. 231 chapters out of 1189 chapters in the Bible have a match.
- Let’s see the results by book of the Bible.
[5]
- Notice there are 315 verses in the Old Testament and 157 verses in the New Testament.
- Mentions of the prophets don’t end with the Old Testament. Notice that.
- Where’s the first mention of the word prophet within the Bible? Genesis.
- There’s only one match in Genesis.
If you look at Exodus, there’s only 2 matches of prophet within that book.
- The book with the most matches is the Book of Jeremiah with 87 verses.
- What’s the book with the most verses within the New Testament?
- The Gospel of Matthew gives us 39 verses. That’s a lot of verses about prophets.
- We’re going to see what some of these are saying within the Bible today.
- The Book of Acts has 31 verses.
The New Testament References The Prophets Constantly
The New Testament talks about prophets greatly.
- Think about that. The Old Testament is much longer than the New Testament.
- The Old Testament has 23,145 verses. There are 315 verses with matches. The % is 1.36%.
- The New Testament has 7,957 verses. There are 157 verses with matches. The % is 1.97%.
- In other words, the New Testament mentions prophets more than the Old Testament.
- There is a GREAT CONNECTION between the Old Testament and the New Testament.
- Here’s one final chart before we start looking into the Scriptures.
[6]
We see Jeremiah, 1 Kings, Matthew, 2 Chronicles, Luke, Acts, and 2 Kings.
- So, we see many books of the New Testament up there at the top. This is very important to see.
- What is a prophet? Let’s go through some Scriptures and find out.
- Let’s go to the very first time the word prophet is used within the King James Bible.
[7] Genesis 20:3-4 But God came to Abimelech in a dream by night, and said to him, Behold, thou art but a dead man, for the woman which thou hast taken; for she is a man’s wife. 4 But Abimelech had not come near her: and he said, Lord, wilt thou slay also a righteous nation?
[8] Genesis 20:5-6 Said he not unto me, She is my sister? and she, even she herself said, He is my brother: in the integrity of my heart and innocency of my hands have I done this. 6 And God said unto him in a dream, Yea, I know that thou didst this in the integrity of thy heart; for I also withheld thee from sinning against me: therefore suffered I thee not to touch her.
[9] Genesis 20:7-8 Now therefore restore the man his wife; for he is a prophet, and he shall pray for thee, and thou shalt live: and if thou restore her not, know thou that thou shalt surely die, thou, and all that are thine. 8 Therefore Abimelech rose early in the morning, and called all his servants, and told all these things in their ears: and the men were sore afraid.
- You see the first use of the word prophet in Genesis Chapter 20 verse 7. “FOR HE IS A PROPHET.”
- God says these words about Abraham. “Restore the man his wife Sarah.”
- “If you won’t, you will die and all that are thine will die.” Abimelech told all his servants these things.
- “AND THE MEN WERE SORE AFRAID.” In other words, don’t mess with the prophets of God.
- Why? These prophets are bringing the word of God. They are bringing God’s message to the people.
[10] Genesis 20:17-18 So Abraham prayed unto God: and God healed Abimelech, and his wife, and his maidservants; and they bare children. 18 For the LORD had fast closed up all the wombs of the house of Abimelech, because of Sarah Abraham’s wife.
- Notice these things. All Scriptures and every word of God is important.
- Because of Sarah Abraham’s wife, the Lord did not allow the women of Abimelech to have children.
- Let’s look to the second occurrence of prophet within the Bible so we can learn more about exactly what a prophet does.
[11] Exodus 7:1-2 And the LORD said unto Moses, See, I have made thee a god to Pharaoh: and Aaron thy brother shall be thy prophet. 2 Thou shalt speak all that I command thee: and Aaron thy brother shall speak unto Pharaoh, that he send the children of Israel out of his land.
- “Aaron thy brother shall be thy prophet.” God is telling Moses that Aaron will be his prophet.
- God is going to tell Moses things, Moses tells Aaron, and Aaron tells Pharaoh.
- This means Aaron is passing on the word of God to Pharaoh because Moses was worried about speaking.
- So, what does a prophet do? A prophet is a preacher of God’s words.
Yes, You Prophesy About Heaven And Hell When Preaching The Gospel
For example, when you tell someone that God will send them to hell unless they believe on Jesus Christ, you are prophesying about future events.
- You’re telling them the truth from God’s words. You are passing God’s words on to them.
- Will someone go to hell unless they believe on Jesus Christ? YES THEY WILL.
- When you preach the Gospel, you are prophesying about the future and what will happen to that person.
- If you believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, you will be saved. This is prophesying. You are a prophet of God.
- If you don’t tell someone the truth, you are a false prophet. There are many false prophets out there.
- A PROPHET IS A PREACHER OF GOD’S WORDS. God’s words are filled with prophecy about future events.
[12] Ecclesiastes 1:1-4 The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem. 2 Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity. 3 What profit hath a man of all his labour which he taketh under the sun? 4 One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh: but the earth abideth for ever.
- King Solomon was a preacher of God’s word which makes him a prophet.
- He says right there: “One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh.”
- “But the earth abideth forever.” So, I know that this earth will never go away.
- This earth that we live on right now will never go away but it will pass away and become new.
- We will have a new earth one day, but it’s not going to be a different earth.
- “THE EARTH ABIDETH FOREVER.” So, I’m not worried about an asteroid destroying the earth.
- This earth is not going away because God gave the prophet Solomon those words right there.
- And the word of God is 100% truth without error.
[13] Psalm 104:5 Who laid the foundations of the earth, that it should not be removed for ever.
- Other prophets agree with King Solomon. Now I have multiple witnesses.
[14] Matthew 24:35 Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.
- This earth will pass away but it’s not being removed. It’s going to be made new.
- The earth abideth forever. IT WILL BE MADE NOW. The old one will pass away for a new one.
- This is exactly the same as being saved. We don’t go away, but we’re made a new creation.
- When I die, I pass away but I’m not dead. I’m never going away. The earth isn’t going away.
[15] 2 Peter 3:10-11 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up. 11 Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness,
[16] 2 Peter 3:12-13 Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat? 13 Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.
- The earth will abide forever. God is in control. The earth will be made new.
- The prophecy of the Bible teaches us the truth. God the Father will dwell with us on earth one day.
- Do you really believe an asteroid is going to destroy the dwelling place of God the Father?
- Hey, it’s not going to happen. So give up your life’s work and seek out God.
- Let’s keep going. Here’s the third instance of prophet within the Bible.
[17] Exodus 15:20-21 And Miriam the prophetess, the sister of Aaron, took a timbrel in her hand; and all the women went out after her with timbrels and with dances. 21 And Miriam answered them, Sing ye to the LORD, for he hath triumphed gloriously; the horse and his rider hath he thrown into the sea.
- Why do you think Miriam was a prophetess? She would pass on the word of God to others.
- She was the sister of Aaron and Moses. She heard the word of God. She passed on that word of God.
- So don’t think that only men are prophets of God. Women can pass on the word of God too.
- This word of God doesn’t come to just some. He’s given us the whole Bible now.
- If you would take the words of God correctly and properly and pass them on, you’re a prophet or a prophetess of God.
Don’t get a big head. Don’t think more highly of yourself than you ought to because the words aren’t yours.
- The words are directly from God through His words in the Bible.
- God doesn’t speak to us directly face to face as He spoke to Moses.
- But we are in a better time because we have the Bible and we don’t have to wait for God to show up.
- We have all the words we need from God right here in the Bible. We can teach these and pass these on.
- Should you wait for a pastor’s or a preacher’s permission before you spread the word of God out there?
- Let’s see some more Scriptures within the Bible.
[18] Numbers 11:24-25 And Moses went out, and told the people the words of the LORD, and gathered the seventy men of the elders of the people, and set them round about the tabernacle. 25 And the LORD came down in a cloud, and spake unto him, and took of the spirit that was upon him, and gave it unto the seventy elders: and it came to pass, that, when the spirit rested upon them, they prophesied, and did not cease.
[19] Numbers 11:26 But there remained two of the men in the camp, the name of the one was Eldad, and the name of the other Medad: and the spirit rested upon them; and they were of them that were written, but went not out unto the tabernacle: and they prophesied in the camp.
[20] Numbers 11:27-29 And there ran a young man, and told Moses, and said, Eldad and Medad do prophesy in the camp. 28 And Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of Moses, one of his young men, answered and said, My lord Moses, forbid them. 29 And Moses said unto him, Enviest thou for my sake? would God that all the LORD’S people were prophets, and that the LORD would put his spirit upon them!
- You don’t need the permission of anyone to speak God’s actual words.
- You do need to know what you’re talking about. You don’t want to teach lies about God’s words.
- Moses was glad that these 2 other men were preaching and prophesying about God’s words.
- Don’t envy them. That’s what we want. We want more and more people preaching God’s actual words.
- Moses says, “Would God that all the Lord’s people were prophets, and that the Lord would put His Spirit upon them.”
God Gave You Hist Spirit To Prophesy And Preach The Truth From His Words
Do you understand that’s what God wants from you today? He gave you His Spirit.
- He wants more than anything for all of us to preach and teach God’s word to the world.
- He doesn’t want women preaching inside the church, but He does want them preaching outside the church.
- Let’s keep going with Scriptures about prophets. Moving to Numbers Chapter 12.
[21] Numbers 12:1-3 And Miriam and Aaron spake against Moses because of the Ethiopian woman whom he had married: for he had married an Ethiopian woman. 2 And they said, Hath the LORD indeed spoken only by Moses? hath he not spoken also by us? And the LORD heard it. 3 (Now the man Moses was very meek, above all the men which were upon the face of the earth.)
[22] Numbers 12:4-5 And the LORD spake suddenly unto Moses, and unto Aaron, and unto Miriam, Come out ye three unto the tabernacle of the congregation. And they three came out. 5 And the LORD came down in the pillar of the cloud, and stood in the door of the tabernacle, and called Aaron and Miriam: and they both came forth.
[23] Numbers 12:6-7 And he said, Hear now my words: If there be a prophet among you, I the LORD will make myself known unto him in a vision, and will speak unto him in a dream. 7 My servant Moses is not so, who is faithful in all mine house.
[24] Numbers 12:8-9 With him will I speak mouth to mouth, even apparently, and not in dark speeches; and the similitude of the LORD shall he behold: wherefore then were ye not afraid to speak against my servant Moses? 9 And the anger of the LORD was kindled against them; and he departed.
- God spoke mouth to mouth with Moses and Moses passed on the word of God.
- This is why Moses was a great prophet of God.
- God tells Aaron and Miriam, “I don’t speak face to face with you but I speak face to face with Moses.”
- “I show myself to every other prophet in other ways, but not with Moses.”
Guess what? We don’t need God to come to us face to face. He gave us the Bible.
- Things are different now. Surely you can see that God doesn’t need to come to us face to face.
- He gave us His Spirit and He gave us all the words that we’ll ever need in the Bible.
[25] Numbers 12:10-11 And the cloud departed from off the tabernacle; and, behold, Miriam became leprous, white as snow: and Aaron looked upon Miriam, and, behold, she was leprous. 11 And Aaron said unto Moses, Alas, my lord, I beseech thee, lay not the sin upon us, wherein we have done foolishly, and wherein we have sinned.
- So think about this. God got angry with Aaron and Miriam because they questioned Moses.
- God spoke to Moses face to face. God gives us the Bible. His words are there for us.
- Just as God gave Moses His words face to face, you now have them within the Bible right here.
- And you have them all. You don’t need anything else. ALL OF GOD’S WORDS that you need are here.
- Now, do you want to question them? It’s not Moses coming to you and telling you what God said.
- It’s God speaking His words directly to you through the prophets within the Bible.
Now, since you’ve believed on Jesus Christ, it’s your job to spread the word of God just as a prophet in the Bible.
- But with this job comes a great responsibility. You don’t want to teach lies.
- You want to make sure that you get things right. How do you do that? You always use the Scriptures.
- You never ignore the Scriptures. You study the Scriptures with everything that you have.
- If you find yourself doing other things more often than learning the Scriptures, you probably should be very careful in using the Scriptures.
- You don’t want to get them wrong. You want to get them right and do good for God and not evil.
[26] Deuteronomy 13:1-2 If there arise among you a prophet, or a dreamer of dreams, and giveth thee a sign or a wonder, 2 And the sign or the wonder come to pass, whereof he spake unto thee, saying, Let us go after other gods, which thou hast not known, and let us serve them;
[27] Deuteronomy 13:3-4 Thou shalt not hearken unto the words of that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams: for the LORD your God proveth you, to know whether ye love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul. 4 Ye shall walk after the LORD your God, and fear him, and keep his commandments, and obey his voice, and ye shall serve him, and cleave unto him.
[28] Deuteronomy 13:5 And that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams, shall be put to death; because he hath spoken to turn you away from the LORD your God, which brought you out of the land of Egypt, and redeemed you out of the house of bondage, to thrust thee out of the way which the LORD thy God commanded thee to walk in. So shalt thou put the evil away from the midst of thee.
- You are not to walk after a false prophet who teaches lies about God and His words.
- You don’t want listen to anyone who is turning people away from the true God.
- And you definitely don’t want to be one of those people. THEY ARE PURE EVIL. Stay away from them.
- God is very serious about His words and what He means. It’s not something we take lightly.
- The word of God is amazing, powerful, and sharper than a twoedged sword. Don’t mess with it.
- Don’t twist it. Don’t try to change it into what you want so you can profit from it. Don’t do it.
[29] Deuteronomy 18:15-16 The LORD thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken; 16 According to all that thou desiredst of the LORD thy God in Horeb in the day of the assembly, saying, Let me not hear again the voice of the LORD my God, neither let me see this great fire any more, that I die not.
[30] Deuteronomy 18:17-19 And the LORD said unto me, They have well spoken that which they have spoken. 18 I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him. 19 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever will not hearken unto my words which he shall speak in my name, I will require it of him.
[31] Deuteronomy 18:20-21 But the prophet, which shall presume to speak a word in my name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or that shall speak in the name of other gods, even that prophet shall die. 21 And if thou say in thine heart, How shall we know the word which the LORD hath not spoken?
- “THE PROPHET” of God is Jesus Christ Lying about God and His words is a very serious offense.
- DEATH IS THE PENALTY in the Old Testament.
- If Joyce Meyer lived at this time of the Old Testament, she would be put to death.
- And probably something like 99% of pastors in churches in this country would be put to death.
- Notice verse 21. “How shall we know the word which the Lord hath not spoken?”
- For us, it’s very easy now. We have all the words of the Bible and the Holy Spirit guiding us.
- If someone says different than the words of the Bible, then we know we have a false prophet.
- But watch what the next verse says.
[32] Deuteronomy 18:22 When a prophet speaketh in the name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him.
- You have all of these so-called “prophets” in today’s world. They are lying false prophets who God hates.
- An example is Paula White. An example is Kenneth Copeland. They say all these things that will happen.
- They say, “Donald Trump will win this election.” Well, guess what? He didn’t win.
- “If the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the Lord hath not spoken.”
- “Thou shalt not be afraid of him.” Do you think I’m afraid to speak against Paula White as if she is Moses?
- No, because everything she teaches doesn’t match the words of the Bible.
- “But the Holy Spirit is leading me,” she says. Wrong. Satan is leading you.
The Holy Spirit Is God And Will Never Contradict The Word Of God That He Magnifies
The Holy Spirit will never contradict the word of God.
- You will know false prophets because you have the Bible. He gave you His words.
- Don’t rely on false preachers and false prophets like Paula White and Kenneth Copeland.
- How many things do they have to prophesy about falsely before people actually wake up?
[33] Deuteronomy 34:9-10 And Joshua the son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom; for Moses had laid his hands upon him: and the children of Israel hearkened unto him, and did as the LORD commanded Moses. 10 And there arose not a prophet since in Israel like unto Moses, whom the LORD knew face to face,
[34] Deuteronomy 34:11-12 In all the signs and the wonders, which the LORD sent him to do in the land of Egypt to Pharaoh, and to all his servants, and to all his land, 12 And in all that mighty hand, and in all the great terror which Moses shewed in the sight of all Israel.
- Do you want to know another sign of a false prophet? It’s one that acts like they never do anything wrong.
- Do you notice what the Bible says about Moses?
- “And there arose not a prophet since in Israel like unto Moses.” God knew Moses face to face.
- Now, was Moses perfect like all of these so-called “prophets of God” in the world today? Let’s see.
[35] Exodus 4:21-22 And the LORD said unto Moses, When thou goest to return into Egypt, see that thou do all those wonders before Pharaoh, which I have put in thine hand: but I will harden his heart, that he shall not let the people go. 22 And thou shalt say unto Pharaoh, Thus saith the LORD, Israel is my son, even my firstborn:
[36] Exodus 4:23-25 And I say unto thee, Let my son go, that he may serve me: and if thou refuse to let him go, behold, I will slay thy son, even thy firstborn. 24 And it came to pass by the way in the inn, that the LORD met him, and sought to kill him. 25 Then Zipporah took a sharp stone, and cut off the foreskin of her son, and cast it at his feet, and said, Surely a bloody husband art thou to me.
- God was so angry with Moses over the circumcision of his son that God was going to kill Moses.
- The Lord sought to kill him. Moses wasn’t a perfect man. There is no perfect man but Jesus Christ.
- So don’t fall for all these preachers and so-called prophets of God who act as if they are perfect.
- It’s a joke. They are a joke. There is no perfect man or woman living in existence but Jesus Christ.
- Prophets simply pass on the word of God. It didn’t come from them as if they’re something special.
- The words came from God and God simply gave them the words to pass on to others.
So, obviously, I can’t go through all the Scriptures with the word prophet in them.
- There are too many for one sermon. There are tons and tons of prophets within the Bible.
- Read about the prophets and prophetesses in the Bible. See their examples.
- Do you know what you’ll find? You won’t find fear. You’ll find boldness as they speak word of God.
- We are not afraid to speak the word of God here. Don’t be afraid. SPEAK IT WITH BOLDNESS.
[37] 1 Kings 18:17-18 And it came to pass, when Ahab saw Elijah, that Ahab said unto him, Art thou he that troubleth Israel? 18 And he answered, I have not troubled Israel; but thou, and thy father’s house, in that ye have forsaken the commandments of the LORD, and thou hast followed Baalim.
- False preachers and liars in the churches will act as if I am troubling them just like here in the Scriptures.
- When you teach the truth, the liars will accuse you of causing trouble. Happens every time.
- They are just like the evil king Ahab and you need to be just like the righteous and saved Elijah.
- Ahab looks at Elijah and says, “Are you the one who is troubling me?”
- Elijah says, “I haven’t troubled you, but you and all your father’s house have forsaken God.”
[38] 1 Kings 18:19-20 Now therefore send, and gather to me all Israel unto mount Carmel, and the prophets of Baal four hundred and fifty, and the prophets of the groves four hundred, which eat at Jezebel’s table. 20 So Ahab sent unto all the children of Israel, and gathered the prophets together unto mount Carmel.
[39] 1 Kings 18:21-22 And Elijah came unto all the people, and said, How long halt ye between two opinions? if the LORD be God, follow him: but if Baal, then follow him. And the people answered him not a word. 22 Then said Elijah unto the people, I, even I only, remain a prophet of the LORD; but Baal’s prophets are four hundred and fifty men.
- This is similar to today’s world.
- There are way more than 1 of God’s prophets left on earth, but there are way more false prophets.
- We are outnumbered greatly. Southeast Christian with their false gospel will have more people than we will ever even think about having here.
- Elijah isn’t afraid. He’s doing what God told him to do. He says, “There’s 450 of you. There’s one of me.”
- “I, even I only, remain a prophet of the Lord. But Baal has 450 of you.”
[40] 1 Kings 18:23-24 Let them therefore give us two bullocks; and let them choose one bullock for themselves, and cut it in pieces, and lay it on wood, and put no fire under: and I will dress the other bullock, and lay it on wood, and put no fire under: 24 And call ye on the name of your gods, and I will call on the name of the LORD: and the God that answereth by fire, let him be God. And all the people answered and said, It is well spoken.
[41] 1 Kings 18:25-26 And Elijah said unto the prophets of Baal, Choose you one bullock for yourselves, and dress it first; for ye are many; and call on the name of your gods, but put no fire under. 26 And they took the bullock which was given them, and they dressed it, and called on the name of Baal from morning even until noon, saying, O Baal, hear us. But there was no voice, nor any that answered. And they leaped upon the altar which was made.
[42] 1 Kings 18:27 And it came to pass at noon, that Elijah mocked them, and said, Cry aloud: for he is a god; either he is talking, or he is pursuing, or he is in a journey, or peradventure he sleepeth, and must be awaked.
- So, look here. ELIJAH MOCKED these other false prophets.
- And I will do the same with people like Kyle Idleman who lies about God and His words constantly.
- He’s made the house of God out to be a business.
- He missed the Scriptures where Jesus gets angry at the temple. He has no fear of the Almighty God.
- I will mock him. I will laugh at him. I will tell him to go ahead and cry aloud to his false god.
- See what happens. Where is your false god, Kyle Idleman? Where is your false god, Southeast Christian?
Where Are These Other False Gods? I Know! They Don’t Exist!
“Is he talking to someone else? Is he pursuing something else? Is he in a journey? Maybe he’s sleeping.”
- “Maybe your false god needs to be awaked out of his sleep. Maybe he needs CPR.”
- This is what Elijah is doing. God does the same thing. God mocks and laughs at all the false gods.
- They don’t exist. They are a figment of the imagination. ALLAH doesn’t exist. Buddha doesn’t exist.
- Brahma doesn’t exist. I laugh at them. They are a joke. Vishnu is a laughing stock to God Almighty.
- No, I don’t respect all of the false gods out there today. I HATE THEM. I hate false religion.
- Why? Because they do things like this as we continue in 1 King Chapter 18 verse 28.
[43] 1 Kings 18:28-29 And they cried aloud, and cut themselves after their manner with knives and lancets, till the blood gushed out upon them. 29 And it came to pass, when midday was past, and they prophesied until the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that there was neither voice, nor any to answer, nor any that regarded.
- A false god won’t answer you. A false prophet has a false god and that god won’t answer.
- Why? Because they don’t exist. Mohammed is a lying false prophet. He won’t help you.
- He’s dead and burning in hell right now. He was a pedophile. He won’t help you.
- Keep worshipping this false prophet and keep dedicating your life to someone who is dead.
- He will never help you, and he will never answer you. EVER.
[44] 1 Kings 18:30-31 And Elijah said unto all the people, Come near unto me. And all the people came near unto him. And he repaired the altar of the LORD that was broken down. 31 And Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, unto whom the word of the LORD came, saying, Israel shall be thy name:
[45] 1 Kings 18:32-33 And with the stones he built an altar in the name of the LORD: and he made a trench about the altar, as great as would contain two measures of seed. 33 And he put the wood in order, and cut the bullock in pieces, and laid him on the wood, and said, Fill four barrels with water, and pour it on the burnt sacrifice, and on the wood.
[46] 1 Kings 18:34-35 And he said, Do it the second time. And they did it the second time. And he said, Do it the third time. And they did it the third time. 35 And the water ran round about the altar; and he filled the trench also with water.
[47] 1 Kings 18:36-37 And it came to pass at the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that Elijah the prophet came near, and said, LORD God of Abraham, Isaac, and of Israel, let it be known this day that thou art God in Israel, and that I am thy servant, and that I have done all these things at thy word. 37 Hear me, O LORD, hear me, that this people may know that thou art the LORD God, and that thou hast turned their heart back again.
[48] 1 Kings 18:38-39 Then the fire of the LORD fell, and consumed the burnt sacrifice, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench. 39 And when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces: and they said, The LORD, he is the God; the LORD, he is the God.
[49] 1 Kings 18:40 And Elijah said unto them, Take the prophets of Baal; let not one of them escape. And they took them: and Elijah brought them down to the brook Kishon, and slew them there.
- God is on Elijah’s side here. God is always on the side of the true prophets of the Bible.
- And guess who is always against them? The majority is always against them.
- It took great signs and wonders for these people to believe Elijah.
- But we don’t ask for signs and wonders now because we don’t need to see them.
- WE KNOW THAT JESUS CHRIST IS THE SAVIOR OF THE WORLD.
- And He has showed us everything we need to see within the Bible.
The prophets of God suffer throughout the Bible. The prophets are killed throughout the Bible.
- Why are they killed? Why are they suffering? Because they simply pass on the word of God.
- They are being killed because of the word of God. Evil people hate the word of God.
- The true prophets of God LOVE THE WORD OF GOD. Do you love the word of God?
- Or would you rather go hear something else? Would you rather go to a concert or hear the word of God?
- Would Elijah have went to a concert or went to hear God’s word? What about Moses?
- “Sorry God, I’ve got other things to do today so I don’t have time to hear your words.”
- Can you imagine that? Well, that’s what we do throughout the days. Don’t do that.
Who Is The Greatest Of All Prophets Born Of Women Within The Bible?
Who is the greatest of all prophets within the Bible? Do you know that answer? Is it Moses? Isaiah? Elijah?
- Elisha? Deborah the prophetess? Abraham? Noah was a preacher of righteousness. Is it Noah?
- Or is it Enoch whom God took? Elijah was taken up into heaven. Surely it has to be one of them.
- What about Joshua? Joshua was awesome. He fought for God and God fought for him.
[50] Joshua 10:11 And it came to pass, as they fled from before Israel, and were in the going down to Beth-horon, that the LORD cast down great stones from heaven upon them unto Azekah, and they died: they were more which died with hailstones than they whom the children of Israel slew with the sword.
[51] Joshua 10:12 Then spake Joshua to the LORD in the day when the LORD delivered up the Amorites before the children of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel, Sun, stand thou still upon Gibeon; and thou, Moon, in the valley of Ajalon.
- Joshua commanded the sun and moon to stand still. “Don’t move,” Joshua commanded.
[52] Joshua 10:13-14 And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the people had avenged themselves upon their enemies. Is not this written in the book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and hasted not to go down about a whole day. 14 And there was no day like that before it or after it, that the LORD hearkened unto the voice of a man: for the LORD fought for Israel.
- The Lord hearkened unto the voice of a man and the Lord fought for Israel.
- There was no day ever like this before or after. God hearkened unto the voice of Joshua.
- Isn’t that amazing? Surely it must be Joshua as the greatest prophet within the Bible, but it’s not.
- Then who, besides THE prophet of God, Jesus Christ, could it be? We go to the Book of Malachi.
- Get your answer within your head as to who is the greatest of all prophets within the Bible.
- If you know the short book of Malachi well, you’ll know where I’m going with this.
[53] Malachi 3:1 Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he shall come, saith the LORD of hosts.
[54] Malachi 4:4-6 Remember ye the law of Moses my servant, which I commanded unto him in Horeb for all Israel, with the statutes and judgments. 5 Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD: 6 And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse.
- Elijah is already gone at the time of this writing. He’s in heaven with God. So who is this talking about?
- We’re at the last book of the Old Testament. That’s the last Scripture in the Old Testament.
- Who comes next as the prophet of God? This man is the greatest prophet of all besides Jesus Christ.
[55] Matthew 3:1-3 In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea, 2 And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. 3 For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.
[56] Matthew 3:4-6 And the same John had his raiment of camel’s hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his meat was locusts and wild honey. 5 Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judaea, and all the region round about Jordan, 6 And were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins.
- John the Baptist was the preacher of preachers. Understand that right now.
- And he didn’t look like Kyle Idleman. He didn’t have hair gel. He didn’t have a suit like this on.
- His clothing was made of camel’s hair. He didn’t need any fancy clothing.
- He didn’t need any fancy food. He ate locusts and honey. He’s the one Isaiah prophesied about.
- He is the prophet like Elijah mentioned in the Book of Malachi.
[57] Matthew 11:7 And as they departed, Jesus began to say unto the multitudes concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken with the wind?
- John the Baptist wasn’t shaken like a reed. HE WAS STRONG. He stood up for Jesus Christ and had no fear.
- Don’t you want to be like the prophets of God who trusted in God with everything they had? I sure do.
- I want that more than anything. You should want that more than anything. Don’t be shaken.
[58] Matthew 11:8-9 But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? behold, they that wear soft clothing are in kings’ houses. 9 But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? yea, I say unto you, and more than a prophet.
- That’s Jesus Christ speaking. John the Baptist was more than a prophet. He wasn’t soft.
[59] Matthew 11:10-11 For this is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee. 11 Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist: notwithstanding he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.
- Jesus says, “JOHN THE BAPTIST IS MY MESSENGER.” Will Jesus say that about you?
- Will you be His messenger or not? Will you be a true prophet of God’s word that tells the truth?
- Will you stand up for God like John the Baptist?
- “Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist.”
- Was Joshua greater than John the Baptist? He made the sun and moon stand still.
- God hearkened unto his voice. But was Joshua greater? No, he wasn’t. John the Baptist wins.
[60] Matthew 11:12-14 And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force. 13 For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John. 14 And if ye will receive it, this is Elias, which was for to come.
- John the Baptist is the messenger that came right before the Savior of the world.
- Think about this and understand this today.
- John the Baptist was the greatest prophet of God besides Jesus Himself. Jesus Christ says so.
- Moses did all types of miracles through God. Joshua did the same.
- Elijah and Elisha did great miracles. Many prophets did great miracles. Did that make them great?
- How many miracles did John the Baptist do?
[61] John 10:39-42 Therefore they sought again to take him: but he escaped out of their hand, 40 And went away again beyond Jordan into the place where John at first baptized; and there he abode. 41 And many resorted unto him, and said, John did no miracle: but all things that John spake of this man were true. 42 And many believed on him there.
- John the Baptist did no miracle, but yet, he is the greatest prophet of God. Think about that one.
- All of these false lying prophets in today’s want to do miracles so they can be great.
- They want all the glory for themselves. I can guarantee you that John the Baptist didn’t.
- What made John the Baptist do great out of all these other prophets? It wasn’t the miracles.
- He was a preacher of righteousness and was getting people saved through Jesus Christ.
[62] John 3:27-29 John answered and said, A man can receive nothing, except it be given him from heaven. 28 Ye yourselves bear me witness, that I said, I am not the Christ, but that I am sent before him. 29 He that hath the bride is the bridegroom: but the friend of the bridegroom, which standeth and heareth him, rejoiceth greatly because of the bridegroom’s voice: this my joy therefore is fulfilled.
[63] John 3:30 He must increase, but I must decrease.
- If you want to be great in God’s eyes, you won’t be great in the world’s eyes.
- YOU MUST DECREASE and JESUS MUST INCREASE. Who are you preaching about?
- Who are you magnifying? Is it all about you? You won’t be great in God’s eyes.
- John the Baptist pointed towards Jesus Christ in all things. That’s what made John great.
- Now watch what John the Baptist says next.
[64] John 3:31-33 He that cometh from above is above all: he that is of the earth is earthly, and speaketh of the earth: he that cometh from heaven is above all. 32 And what he hath seen and heard, that he testifieth; and no man receiveth his testimony. 33 He that hath received his testimony hath set to his seal that God is true.
[65] John 3:34-36 For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him. 35 The Father loveth the Son, and hath given all things into his hand. 36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.
- If you speak the words of God, He will help you and will not limit the wisdom and knowledge He gives you.
- This is what you want. Preach and teach the word of God. Magnify His words in all that you do.
- And you can be the man or woman that God wants you to be. You can be like these prophets in the Bible.
- Ask God to help you. He says that He will. He needs people like you all over this world.
- He wants people like John the Baptist all over this world. Don’t be shaken by this world.
- What happened to John the Baptist? He preached against sin, and he was killed for it.
- Don’t be surprised. The prophets of God are killed all throughout the Bible.
- But do you think John the Baptist is dead? He’s not. He stood up for God and was killed for it.
Jesus Christ Saved John The Baptist
I can guarantee you that Jesus Christ, “THE PROPHET OF ALL PROPHETS,” saved John the Baptist.
- He is a friend of Jesus Christ. He is in heaven.
- What are the prophets doing within the Bible? Why was John the Baptist the greatest prophet?
- They all speak of Jesus Christ. John the Baptist prepared the way for Jesus Christ.
- What does this Bible study of the prophets teach us today?
- The entire Bible points to the Savior of the world, Jesus Christ. John the Baptist pointed to Jesus Christ.
- He said, “Hey, I am not the Savior. This man right here, Jesus Christ, He is the Savior.”
- “He is the Son of God. Believe on Him and you will have everlasting life.”
The false prophets all throughout the churches today call John the Baptist a liar.
- They call all the prophets within the Bible liars. Jeremiah pointed to Jesus Christ as Savior.
- Isaiah pointed to Jesus Christ as Savior. There is no other Savior than Jesus Christ.
- Moses can’t save you. Joshua can’t save you. Elijah can’t save you. John the Baptist can’t save you.
- Stephen can’t save you. Abel can’t save you. They were killed themselves. But Jesus can.
- All the prophets in the Bible point to Jesus Christ.
The New Testament shows you the validity of the Old Testament today.
- You can be saved from the words within the Old Testament because they all point to Jesus Christ.
- All of God’s prophets in the Bible tell you the truth. They are all telling you that Jesus is the Savior.
- The New Testament quotes the books and the prophets of the Old Testament over and over again.
- I’ve counted over 900 verses within the New Testament that are quoting the Old Testament.
- The entire Bible goes together flawlessly and all of it matters. Jesus came to fulfill the law.
- The word of God is the law of God. As we close this Bible study of the prophets, let’s see the last set of Scriptures in the entire Bible with the word prophets within them.
- We go to the very last chapter in the entire Bible.
[66] Revelation 22:6-7 And he said unto me, These sayings are faithful and true: and the Lord God of the holy prophets sent his angel to shew unto his servants the things which must shortly be done. 7 Behold, I come quickly: blessed is he that keepeth the sayings of the prophecy of this book.
[67] Revelation 22:8-9 And I John saw these things, and heard them. And when I had heard and seen, I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel which shewed me these things. 9 Then saith he unto me, See thou do it not: for I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren the prophets, and of them which keep the sayings of this book: worship God.
- This angel in heaven was just a man. He is of thy brethren the prophets. Prophets are angels in heaven.
- They are not the living creatures or the beasts but they are men in heaven. They are prophets.
- And what does this prophet in heaven tell John right there in verse 9?
- He says, “I am of thy brethren the prophets, and of them which keep the sayings of this book.”
- True prophets of God, that’s what you want to be, will keep the sayings of the Bible.
- They will not attempt to change God’s words. They are fearful of God and will not lie about God.
- God’s prophets do not tell lies about God and act as if they represent Him.
Be A True Prophet Of God And Speak Truth From The Word Of God
In your life, be like the true prophets of God and stand up for God and His words. Not lying words.
- Stand up for the true words of God. And yes, you might be killed for them. But your soul will not die.
- The greatest privilege you can ever have is dying for the word of God. He died for you.
- Will you die for Him? Will you be like Stephen who was a prophet of God? Stephen preached truth.
- And Stephen died for simply preaching the truth. He wasn’t afraid to tell them the truth.
[68] Acts 7:51-53 Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Ghost: as your fathers did, so do ye. 52 Which of the prophets have not your fathers persecuted? and they have slain them which shewed before of the coming of the Just One; of whom ye have been now the betrayers and murderers: 53 Who have received the law by the disposition of angels, and have not kept it.
[69] Acts 7:54-56 When they heard these things, they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed on him with their teeth. 55 But he, being full of the Holy Ghost, looked up stedfastly into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God, 56 And said, Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God.
[70] Acts 7:57-59 Then they cried out with a loud voice, and stopped their ears, and ran upon him with one accord, 58 And cast him out of the city, and stoned him: and the witnesses laid down their clothes at a young man’s feet, whose name was Saul. 59 And they stoned Stephen, calling upon God, and saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.
[71] Acts 7:60 And he kneeled down, and cried with a loud voice, Lord, lay not this sin to their charge. And when he had said this, he fell asleep.
- Stephen wasn’t scared. He saw the heavens opened and His Savior standing there waiting for him.
- “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.” Are you prepared to die for Jesus Christ? You should be. Be ready.
- “And he kneeled down and CRIED with a loud voice, Lord, lay not this sin to their charge.”
- Even to the point of his death he was still thinking of the others who he wanted to be saved.
- We should always be seeking to get the lost saved. This is what the prophets of God will do.
Let’s pray.
