[2] The title of the sermon: “DID JESUS TEACH A WORKS BASED SALVATION?”
- Did you know there are people everywhere out there who say that Jesus taught a works based salvation?
- One group of these people who teach this call themselves dispensationalists.
- This is why you must stay away from dispensationalism. And I’ll show you why today.
Some will teach that Jesus Christ Himself, at His first coming, preached that people are saved by works.
- And then they will say, “No one can be saved by works so they all went to Abraham’s bosom.”
- “Then Jesus, when He died, went to Abraham’s bosom, preached to the people, and then they believed and went to heaven by faith.”
- This is what these people have made up. They make up fairy tales. Abraham’s bosom is his chest.
- It is a body part. Abraham’s chest cavity didn’t get enlarged and then he jumped in his own chest cavity.
- Abraham didn’t even exist when Noah lived. Noah didn’t go to Abraham’s chest cavity. Fairy tales.
Dispensationalists, some of them, will teach that Abraham was saved by faith and works.
- There are Scriptures in the Bible that directly disprove this over and over and over again.
- All people of all time are saved by God’s grace through faith in God.
- Noah found grace in the sight of the Lord.
- Abraham believed and it was accounted unto him for righteousness.
Abel offered a sacrifice that pictured faith in the Lamb of God.
- “To him give ALL THE PROPHETS witness that through His name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins.”
- Hebrews 11 teaches us that Abel had faith. In every so-called dispensation, FAITH IS SEEN.
- But they act like it isn’t. In Genesis Chapter 4, we see that men began to call upon the name of the Lord.
[3] Psalm 116:10-13 I believed, therefore have I spoken: I was greatly afflicted: 11 I said in my haste, All men are liars. 12 What shall I render unto the LORD for all his benefits toward me? 13 I will take the cup of salvation, and call upon the name of the LORD.
- We believe so therefore we speak and call upon the name of the Lord.
- God preached the Gospel unto Abraham. Dispensationalists act as if Abraham didn’t know the Gospel.
- They will act as if Abraham didn’t know about Jesus Christ.
- Jesus shows up to Abraham in Genesis Chapter 18. “And the Lord appeared unto Him.”
[4] Galatians 3:8-9 And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all nations be blessed. 9 So then they which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham.
- Abraham, CLEARLY, is saved by faith alone. Romans and Galatians explains this in every possible way.
- Man is justified by their works in front of man. Works never justify you before God.
- Man can’t see faith. God can see faith. JESUS SAW THEIR FAITH IN THE GOSPELS. We can’t see faith.
- How do you show someone your faith? BY YOUR WORKS. That’s all you can.
- Salvation is not of works. I can go through hundreds of Scriptures again.
- I do it constantly. I’m not going to do that for this sermon.
Instead I am going to go over how evil it is to teach others that Jesus preaches a works based salvation.
- I would be scared to death to teach something like that.
- Will you really say that Jesus taught a works based salvation?
- Will you really say, dispensationalists, that Jesus taught a different Gospel than Paul?
[5] Galatians 1:6-9 I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: 7 Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. 8 But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. 9 As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.
- So, I want to show you what dispensationalists, will do to the Scriptures.
- I guarantee you, with everything that I have, Jesus didn’t preach a works based salvation.
- Yes, if you are perfect, you can make it into eternal life without Jesus Christ.
- But the Bible, AND REALITY, tells us that we are not perfect. We have all sinned.
- We all come short of the glory of God. There is none good, no, not one.
Let’s take a close look at Scripture the dispensationalists will use to say Jesus taught a works based salvation.
- We will look to the rich young ruler in the Gospels. Where do we find this story in the Bible?
- We find it in Matthew Chapter 19, Mark Chapter 10, and Luke Chapter 18.
- Let’s look at these and see what is actually happening.
[6] Matthew 19:16 And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life?
- This man comes to Jesus calling Him “Good Master” or “Perfect Master.”
- He asks, “What good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life.”
- He wants to know what good thing he can do to earn eternal life. He wants to work for eternal life.
- He wants to live a good life so he can gain eternal life. That’s what he is asking Jesus Christ.
- How does Jesus answer this?
[7] Matthew 19:17 And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments.
- Jesus tells him FIRST, “There is none good but one, that is, God.”
- Why are you calling me good? Jesus is good. Jesus is perfect. Therefore, Jesus is God.
- If thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments.
If you want to work for eternal life, keep the commandments. Jesus knows this man well.
- He thinks he is good. He thinks he has kept the commandments. He deceives himself.
- Jesus isn’t deceiving this man. Jesus is teaching that you can have eternal life if you are perfect.
- Romans Chapter 2 teaches this. If you are perfect, you don’t need Jesus Christ.
- If you are perfect, you are God. Are you God? No. Therefore, you are not perfect.
How would you respond to this from Jesus if you were that man? Wouldn’t you say, “Jesus, I can’t be perfect.”
- “Jesus, I can’t keep all the commandments. I’ve lied and I’ve stolen already.”
- “I broke the commandments as a child. What must I do to be saved? I want to be saved.”
- “I can’t do this on my own, Jesus.” This is what the man should have responded with.
- But did he? No, listen to what he says to Jesus. And remember, Jesus already knows these people well.
[8] Matthew 19:18-19 He saith unto him, Which? Jesus said, Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, 19 Honour thy father and thy mother: and, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
- Jesus tells the man to keep the commandments to enter into everlasting life. This is truth.
- The man says, “Which commandments?” Jesus lists them out for him.
- 1) Do not murder, 2) Do not commit adultery, 3) Do not steal, 4) Do not bear false witness, 5) Honor your father and mother, 6) Love your neighbor.
- Now, do you really think this man has kept all of these and has never broken one of them?
- Bearing false witness is fourth on the list. He’s about to do that. Listen to this.
[9] Matthew 19:20 The young man saith unto him, All these things have I kept from my youth up: what lack I yet?
- Loving thy neighbor means you always follow God’s commandments. You never break any of them.
- This man says, “All these things have I kept from my youth up: what lack I yet?”
- The man lies to Jesus Christ as if He doesn’t know that He’s broken these commandments.
- His response was a lie. Thou shalt not lie. He just lied. He says that he’s never stolen.
- Never a false witness. He’s always honored his father and mother. He’s kept the commandments always.
- This would mean that this man thinks he is perfect.
[10] Matthew 19:21 Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me.
- Jesus says, “IF thou wilt be perfect.” He tells the man IF he is perfect, “go and sell everything.”
- “Give it to the poor. Have treasure in heaven. Come and follow me.”
- If you’re perfect, you would do those things and follow Jesus Christ. But how does this man respond?
[11] Matthew 19:22 But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful: for he had great possessions.
- This rich young man was a liar. He was not perfect. He wouldn’t follow Jesus Christ.
- Does Jesus teach here that good works will save you? Yes, if you are perfect.
- Does He teach that following all the commandments will save you? Yes, if you are perfect.
- Do you really think that you are perfect? Do you really think you’ve never done anything wrong.
Let’s think about soul winning as an example. You go up and knock on the door.
- A rich young man comes to the door all prideful, arrogant, and not humble at all.
- You attempt to teach him that all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.
- You teach him that there are none good, but one, that is God.
- You teach him that we are all unclean and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags before God.
How does he respond to you? He tells you that he has kept all of the commandments and never sinned.
- How would you respond? I would say, “If you’re perfect, then you don’t need Jesus Christ.”
- You can’t win someone like that to the Lord. He believes in himself and his goodness.
- You might attempt to teach him that he is wrong. You would be wasting your time.
Jesus didn’t waste His time because He already knew it would be worthless. He shows us that.
- This Scripture isn’t worthless. This teaches us something very important and basic.
- There is none good. We use this Scripture often to win people to Christ.
- Most people will admit they have done wrong. But this man really thinks he is perfect.
- Do these people exist? Yes, many of them are so-called Christians.
- You won’t be saved if you can’t humble yourself before Jesus Christ who is holy and perfect.
But the dispensationalists, some of them, will say that during this time people were saved by their works.
- They will say that is why Jesus preached this works based salvation.
- Yes, it is valid that a perfect man will go to heaven.
- But how many times does Jesus have to tell us that no man is perfect?
- Do we really believe ourselves to be perfect at any time while we are in this flesh that is dying?
- For the wages of sin is death. We are dying because we sin. In our flesh dwelleth no good thing.
[12] Mark 10:17-19 And when he was gone forth into the way, there came one running, and kneeled to him, and asked him, Good Master, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life? 18 And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God. 19 Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Defraud not, Honour thy father and mother.
[13] Mark 10:21-23 Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me. 22 And he was sad at that saying, and went away grieved: for he had great possessions. 23 And Jesus looked round about, and saith unto his disciples, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God!
- If you are perfect, simply continue to be perfect.
- If you have never done wrong, you don’t need to be saved from doing wrong.
- If you have no sin, you can enter the kingdom of heaven on your own. You won’t need Jesus.
- But we see that there are none like this. This is why Jesus came and died on the cross for the whole world.
He didn’t die for a select few who aren’t perfect. He died for those people who think they are perfect too.
- If you think you are perfect, it’s time to change your mind about that.
- If this man would have given up his riches, he would have heard more and more preaching of Jesus Christ.
- If he thought Jesus Christ was the Good Master he called Him, why not follow Him?
- If Jesus says, “FOLLOW ME,” this is a commandment from Jesus. You better follow it if you are perfect.
- If not, you just broke His commandment. Sell everything you have and give it to the poor.
- Commandment from Jesus. Broken commandment from the rich young ruler. NOT PERFECT.
[14] Luke 18:18-20 And a certain ruler asked him, saying, Good Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life? 19 And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? none is good, save one, that is, God. 20 Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honour thy father and thy mother.
- We see this same account in the Bible three different times in the Gospels.
[15] Luke 18:21-23 And he said, All these have I kept from my youth up. 22 Now when Jesus heard these things, he said unto him, Yet lackest thou one thing: sell all that thou hast, and distribute unto the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, follow me. 23 And when he heard this, he was very sorrowful: for he was very rich.
- If you don’t do everything that God commands you to do, you are not perfect.
- You are not living a good life. Your good life will not get you to heaven. You are not Jesus Christ.
- If you have sinned against God, your penalty is death and hell. This means you need to be saved from sin.
Now, I want to go back earlier in this same chapter of Luke Chapter 18.
- What is Jesus focusing on here in this chapter? You will see the same teaching.
- The Bible tells us exactly what He is doing when He is teaching these things. Listen to this.
[16] Luke 18:9 And he spake this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others:
- Jesus is teaching these things to people who trust in themselves that they are righteous.
- These people love themselves and despise others. They think they are good and perfect.
- For example, the rich young man, according to these words doesn’t love his neighbor.
- He despises his neighbor. Jesus loved him and told him the truth.
- If he’s perfect, follow the commandments of Jesus Christ. Thou shalt not lie.
I get people constantly telling me that salvation is of works.
- I ask them, “Which works? What works must I do to be saved?” We can follow the example Jesus gives.
- This rich young ruler is asking the same question. “Which works must I do to be saved?”
- So, these people that tell me salvation is of works should be using the Scriptures.
The answer Jesus gives to the rich young ruler should be the answer to my question.
- What works must I do to be saved? The answer is this:
- 1) Do not murder, 2) Do not commit adultery, 3) Do not steal, 4) Do not bear false witness, 5) Honor your father and mother, 6) Love your neighbor.
- Loving your neighbor is equal to following all the commandments.
- So, they should tell me to not murder, not commit adultery, not steal, no lies, honor your father and mother ALWAYS, and love thy neighbor as thyself.
Now, the people who teach me that salvation is of works will say that they have done all these things.
- I will admit clearly that I have NOT done all of those things. I don’t forget what I’ve done. I have sinned.
- “But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.”
- Are you telling me, that in your flesh, you have never done this? You have never lied?
- You have never stolen anything in your life? You have always honored your father AND mother?
- You have always loved your neighbor and never done anything wrong to someone near to you?
Jesus, not me, says: “If thou wilt be perfect, go sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: AND come and follow me.”
- For these people who say we are saved by our works, this is what you must do if you want to be saved by your wonderful works.
- The words come straight from Jesus Christ. Not me. He says that you must be perfect.
- If you say that works are included in salvation, then you must be perfect.
- You must sell everything you have. You must give it all to the poor. And you must follow Jesus Christ.
- You must do everything He says for you to do. Have you done that?
If you teach a works based salvation, then you better be teaching the same things Jesus told us right here.
- You better be teaching that you must sell everything you have and give it all to the poor.
- You must be teaching that one lie will send you to hell.
- You must be teaching that one time of looking at someone and lusting after them will send you to hell.
- These are your works that Jesus will look at. You must be perfect. You cannot sin at all.
- You must be teaching that stealing one thing in your life, no matter how small it might be, will send you to hell.
So, when I ask the question: “What good works must I do to be saved from hell and inherit eternal life?”
- Your answers better match the Scriptures or you just lied to me.
- If you are perfect and follow Jesus Christ perfectly, your answers should then match His answers.
- What I am saying is the truth. You don’t get to make up your own answers.
- You are perfect, you follow all the commandments, you sold all your possessions, you gave everything to the poor, and now you follow Jesus Christ perfectly every moment of your life.
- You have faith and perfect works to go along with your faith so you are a perfect man or perfect woman.
- You never mess up. You never sin. You must teach me to be like you. Do you think you are God?
If we are saved by faith PLUS works, then what works must I do to be saved?
- These people will teach that you are saved by faith but you must continue in works or you won’t be saved.
- How does that work? You are saved by faith right now but you must continue in works to be saved?
- You aren’t making any sense at all. If we aren’t saved by faith right now, then what saves us?
- Works? Which ones? What good works must I do to be saved? Answer the question.
Whatever you choose to answer is not written in the Bible unless you match what Jesus told the rich young ruler.
- And the people preaching these things didn’t sell everything they have and give it to the poor.
- The entire Bible, doctrine from front to back, teaches that faith alone saves you.
- Then, we “SHOULD” do good works. Which ones? Follow the commandments. Preach the actual Gospel.
- Baptize people. Teach them to do what God says. Don’t lie. Don’t steal. Don’t commit adultery.
- Don’t covet. Don’t lust after what other people have. Honor your father and mother. Love your neighbor.
- Will you be perfect in following all of the commandments? No. This proves you need Jesus Christ ALONE.
- I want to continue in Luke Chapter 18.
[17] Luke 18:9-11 And he spake this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others: 10 Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican. 11 The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican.
[18] Luke 18:12-14 I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess. 13 And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner. 14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.
- The Pharisee says that the publican is unjust. Jesus says the publican is justified. Who is right?
- The Pharisee says that he is good and perfect. The publican says he is a sinner.
- The Pharisee believes in his works and exalts himself.
The publican doesn’t believe in his works and humbles himself.
- He wouldn’t even dare to look up to heaven because he knew he was not good.
- “God be merciful to me a sinner.” If you exalt yourself and your great works, you shall be abased.
- You shall be humbled. God will humble you greatly.
- There are other examples of people who think they are saved by their wonderful works.
[19] Matthew 7:21-23 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. 22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? 23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.
- You can call Jesus “Lord, Lord” all you want. You can say that you’ve put your faith in Him all you want.
- If you believe your works are a part of salvation, being saved, then you don’t have faith IN HIM.
- If you say that your good works are a part of salvation in any way, then you don’t have faith in Jesus.
- You can’t faith and works for salvation. It is faith alone. You can’t be saved by grace plus your works.
You can’t say, “Jesus, look at all my wonderful works for salvation.”
- You can’t say that you’ve been saved by faith and now all of these works are required for you to be saved.
- Again, if you think salvation is of works in any way, then you don’t believe in Jesus.
- If you think salvation is of works, you will also believe that everlasting life can be lost. Makes no sense.
[20] Romans 11:6 And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then is it no more grace: otherwise work is no more work.
- We are only saved by God’s grace through faith. EVERYONE FROM EVERY TIME/AGE IN THE BIBLE.
- This definition here in this Scripture doesn’t change. You can’t be saved by grace and works.
- Grace means you don’t deserve it. Works means you deserve it and can boast about it.
- Did Jesus really teach that you should boast about your works and greatness to be saved?
- No, the other people were doing that and He clearly taught against it. He preached faith to save.
- If someone actually believes themselves to be perfect, they have lost their mind.
- Reality doesn’t exist to them.
We are ONLY saved by the grace of God. “And if by grace, then is it no more of works.”
- If salvation was of works, then it wouldn’t be of grace. If it is works, then it is not grace.
- You cannot work for salvation. Jesus didn’t teach that we must be saved by works.
- He is teaching that the perfect will never be saved by their works because they are not perfect.
- They just think they are perfect and deceive themselves.
[21] Ephesians 2:8-10 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.
- This Scripture tells you exactly how you are saved and it not taken out of context.
- We are only saved by grace through faith. NOT OF WORKS LEST ANY MAN SHOULD BOAST.
- God freely gives this gift. I’ve been told that salvation is not a free gift. “We must work for it too.”
The Bible specifically says that the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life.
- God calls salvation a free gift, the gift of God, over and over again. And the perfect people disagree.
- The people who believe in works will disagree. If it were of works, Christ died in vain.
- If your works give you righteousness to save you, then why did Christ come?
[22] Galatians 2:21 I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain.
- The grace of God doesn’t include works. We are only saved by the grace of God through Jesus Christ.
- Callie came up with an illustration when we were practicing giving the Gospel. This is a good one.
- Jesus Christ is the Savior of the world.
- For illustration purposes, let’s say this Bible right here is Jesus Christ.
- I believe in Jesus Christ for salvation. I know that it is only Jesus Christ who saves me.
- I will only believe in this Bible, for illustration only, that represents Jesus Christ.
Now, if I add something else to this Bible or Jesus Christ, and I say I must have this too.
- This water bottle here represents the good works that I’ve done in my life.
- I don’t want to bring the bad works that I’ve done in. They don’t count. I only want my good works here.
- It doesn’t work that way, but this is showing what others are doing.
- I bring this water bottle in here to help Jesus Christ save me. My works are going to help Him.
- Now, if I say I believe in Jesus Christ but I also believe in my works, do I believe in Jesus Christ?
- Do I believe He alone is “THE” Savior of the world? Not if I have my works there as a requirement.
Who is the Savior of the world? Who is the sacrifice for sins? Are we included? Are our works included?
- No, they are not. If we add them, we are saying that we do not believe in Jesus Christ.
- You can call out Lord, Lord all you want. You can say you believe in Him all you want.
- You must actually believe IN HIM and not attempt to add other things to Him.
- If your works were included, then you don’t need Jesus there at all. You could just do more good works.
This is what the Bible teaches in every way possible. Abraham wasn’t saved by His works.
- He was justified by his works in front of man but he cannot glory before God with his works.
- Rahab the harlot was justified in front of man by her works but not in front of God.
- Do you really think Abraham was justified and saved by his works in front of God?
- Do you really think Rahab the harlot was justified by her works in front of God?
[23] Matthew 5:20 For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.
- Do you understand this Scripture? People attempt to use this to say that Jesus taught works for heaven.
- They think that Jesus is saying good works will get you to heaven.
- “Your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees.”
Jesus called them children of the devil. So, how much righteousness do they have?
- “Abraham believed and it was accounted unto him for righteousness.”
- When you have faith in God, He imputes His righteousness to you. You have none on your own.
- You’re a sinner. There is none good, no, not one. The scribes and Pharisees have no faith in Jesus.
- Killing Jesus does not equal faith. Their works showed that they had no faith in Jesus.
- Your works can show that you have faith in Jesus. It doesn’t prove anything for sure as we can’t see faith.
Jesus said that your righteousness must exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees.
- True statement. He isn’t preaching that works save you.
- The scribes and Pharisees had ZERO righteousness. You have to have some righteousness.
- You must have faith in Jesus Christ, and He gives you that righteousness FREELY. He says so.
[24] Matthew 23:2-5 Saying, The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat: 3 All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not. 4 For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men’s shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers. 5 But all their works they do for to be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments,
- The people who say that works save you aren’t doing any good works. That’s the hilarious part.
- They preach a false gospel that sends people to hell. Is this good? They model themselves after scribes.
- They model themselves after Pharisees. The seminaries and Bible colleges look the same.
- Look at how well groomed we are. We taught discipline. We taught lies. We taught works for salvation.
- Jesus taught us to humble ourselves. The churches teach the opposite. Exalt yourself and your works.
So, back to these dispensationalists who say that people were saved by their works during certain dispensations or certain periods of time.
- They will teach that Jesus only taught a works based salvation when He came at His first coming.
- They will say that throughout the Gospels He is teaching a works based salvation.
- Really? Did you take the Gospel of John away from the Gospels. Do you ignore these things?
- They say, “Well, He taught a works based salvation to the rich young ruler and that’s all He taught.”
- Really? Did you forget the Gospel of John completely?
They say, “Are you calling Jesus a liar? Why didn’t Jesus say FAITH ALONE to that young ruler.”
- Is that what your argument? You missed the entire point of what Jesus is teaching.
- Can someone who thinks they are perfect be saved by the blood of Jesus Christ?
- No. They don’t need Him. If they think they are perfect, then go be perfect Jesus says to him.
- Did Jesus teach Nicodemus to do good works to be saved? Nicodemus came to Jesus with humility.
- And Jesus taught him how to make it to heaven. Did Jesus tell him works?
[25] John 3:15-18 That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. 16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
- Is that a works based salvation? Why does everyone ignore the Gospel of John now?
- “Well, that was a different time.” What are you talking about?
- I thought He preached works before He died on the cross. That’s what you say.
Jesus taught that a perfect man will go to heaven without the need to be saved from sins.
- He said, “THERE ARE NONE GOOD BUT ONE.” The man didn’t listen.
- He didn’t care what the Good Master said.
- But we should know we aren’t perfect. We don’t trust in our imperfect selves.
- We must trust the perfect and holy God who gives us the way. He is the ONLY WAY.
- Our good works are not a part of THE WAY. Our good works don’t even breathe.
- Did Jesus not teach “THY FAITH HATH MADE THEE WHOLE” throughout the Gospels?
So, again, what good works must I do to be saved? What about the thief on the cross next to Jesus?
- His works were judged on this earth by man because he was a criminal.
- Man judged him as guilty, and they were putting him to death for it.
- His bad works must have far outweighed any good works that he did prior to being hung on a cross.
- Was this man saved by his works? We know that this man went to heaven. Heaven = paradise.
- There is no paradise in hell called Abraham’s bosom. This is a body part. The chest of Abraham.
- We are told by dispensationalists that he lived in a time where works were required to be saved.
What good works did the thief do to make it to heaven? He admitted he was a sinner. He humbled himself.
- He told the other man that Jesus had done nothing wrong.
- Then he says, “Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom.”
- He believed in Jesus therefore he spoke. You could say he did one good work after he believed.
He told the other man that Jesus had done nothing amiss or wrong.
- Is that the good work that someone must do to be saved? The other man didn’t even get saved.
- As long as you have faith in Jesus and say one sentence to another man about Jesus you will be saved?
- Is that what the Bible is teaching? No. One work keeps you saved? No. FAITH ALONE SAVES.
- “He that believeth on Him is NOT CONDEMNED: but he that believeth not is condemned already.”
For the dipsticksationalists that teach the thief went to Abraham’s bosom or paradise in hell, you do realize that the thief died after Jesus was already dead, right?
- So he died after your dipsticksation ended. So what happened?
- You better change the end of your dipsticksation to Jesus arising from the dead.
- They say that it ends at the death of Jesus Christ. The thief died after that.
- But where did he go? The Bible says paradise. Think about that one, dipsticksationalists.
- Paradise = heaven. There is no compartment in hell called Abraham’s bosom. Ever.
Here’s the truth. If you do the whole law and never offend in one point, you are righteous.
- If you are perfect, you don’t need Jesus Christ. The Bible teaches the truth.
- And then God tells you in every way possible that there are none good.
- There are none perfect. We have all sinned. This is why Jesus died for the sins of the whole world.
- This is why the body of everyone dies. If your body is dying, you don’t live a good life.
- If your body is dying, you aren’t sinless. If your body is dying, your good works won’t get you to heaven.
- Now, is your body dying or not? You are a sinner. You need to Jesus Christ.
- Put your faith in Jesus Christ and be saved. Receive everlasting life for your soul right now.
[26] John 6:28-29 Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God? 29 Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.
- Did Jesus preach exactly what good works they must do for salvation?
- “We want to do the works of God.” He says to believe on Him whom He hath sent.
- If you won’t simply believe on Jesus for salvation, you must keep the whole law.
Let’s summarize the answer to the question: “Did Jesus teach a works based salvation?”
- Jesus didn’t teach that some good works along with some evil works would save you.
- This is what other people are teaching and preaching in churches and out of churches.
- Jesus didn’t teach that you must do more good works than evil works to enter into eternal life.
He taught that you must be perfect to go to heaven on your own. “If thou wilt be perfect.”
- But He taught that there are none perfect. There are none good. So you can’t go to heaven by works.
- He taught that if you are perfect, you will sell everything you have and give it to the poor.
- If you are perfect, you will follow Him in everything that you do.
- If perfect, you should be out there right now living like Jesus lived. Are you? No, you aren’t.
- If you sell everything you have, you wouldn’t have a home. Do you? Okay. I do too. I’m not perfect.
- I need Jesus Christ to save me because I am not good.
Let’s pray.
