The Compassion, Power, and Authority of Jesus Christ
Last Sunday School lesson we talked about the people of Capernaum, people living in darkness, seeing the great light of Jesus Christ walk right into their city. Jesus is the great light of this world. But then he calls as the light of the world.
We are to let our light shine. Go out and preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We are to follow in the footsteps of Jesus. Peter, Andrew, James, and John immediately got up and followed Jesus Christ. They left everything else and followed Jesus.
Today, I want you to see the compassion, power, and authority Jesus has to heal physically, spiritually, and emotionally. He can heal every type of illness and affliction. No problem is too big for the biggest of all, Jesus Christ.
Jesus Can Fix Anything at Any Time
Jesus is the healer of every hurt. No matter what it is, Jesus can fix it.
Matthew 4:23
And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people.
Jesus goes all about Galilee. Remember, this is where he begins his ministry after he is baptized by John the Baptist.
He goes into the synagogues, or the places where Jews worship. Synagogue means a gathering place or assembly. Jesus would go there and teach in the synagogues. He would preach the Gospel of the kingdom, which is the good news.
He preached to repent and believe the Gospel. Change your mind and put your trust in the Savior of the World. Jesus is the way, the only way. The kingdom of God is come unto you. And now we see Jesus show his authority over sin, sickness, and evil.
The Bible says that he went about all Galilee “healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people.”
All Sickness Means All Sicknesses
When the Bible says, “All manner of sickness and all manner of disease,” it means ALL, everything, every type of sickness and disease.
If you look closely at that verse, you’ll see that Jesus first went about all Galilee. He moved. He got up and he did something. He didn’t wait for everything to happen for him. He did something about it first. That’s what we must do first. We must get up and go. We go out and find the people.
He then taught the people. He preached the Gospel. So, again, he got up and went. He taught. He preached the Gospel. We can do the same. And then he healed all manner of sickness and disease among the people.
Nothing is too hard for Jesus Christ.
Jesus is a preacher. He is the preacher. He brought the message of hope. He preached the Gospel of the kingdom. The Gospel brings spiritual healing and salvation. This is the most important: the spiritual salvation of your soul.
Jesus Christ is a Healer
Jesus is a healer. He is the healer. He healed all manner of sickness and disease. And listen, if someone like that came around here, what do you think would happen? What if a man came around here that could heal all manner of sickness and disease?
Let’s say you have trouble walking. Jesus could heal you. There would be people fighting to see Jesus. And that’s what happened.
Matthew 4:24
And his fame went throughout all Syria: and they brought unto him all sick people that were taken with divers diseases and torments, and those which were possessed with devils, and those which were lunatick, and those that had the palsy; and he healed them.
His fame went throughout all Syria. That’s a huge area. The news of Jesus Christ spread quickly. People were astonished at Jesus. “Whence hath this man this wisdom, and these mighty works?”
How many miracles did Jesus do? In John Chapter 21 verse 25, the Bible says: “And there are also many other things which Jesus did, the which, if they should be written every one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written. Amen.”
The Fame of Jesus Spread Quickly Because of His Healing Power
Jesus did so many miracles. His fame spread quickly. And the people brought unto Jesus all sick people. What did these sick people have? The Bible tells us right there.
Divers diseases or diverse diseases. Diverse means different or various. Diverse diseases and torments. Some diseases and sicknesses are tormenting to people. It is great pain. Those possessed with devils were healed. Those which were lunatick were healed. Those that had the palsy were healed. The Bible says, “And he healed them.”
So, we see Jesus healed all sick people. What did they have? There are five things listed there.
- Divers diseases.
- Torments.
- Possessed with devils.
- Lunatick.
- Palsy.
Let’s see what each one of these mean. And know, that if you or someone else you know has these sicknesses, that Jesus Christ can heal them of these things that are tormenting them.
Number 1: Divers Diseases
This is various types of sicknesses and illnesses including infections, chronic illnesses, fevers, blindness, deafness, and other ailments that commonly afflict people. Fever, leprosy, hemorrhaging, skin conditions, and internal diseases. Jesus is the great healer. He can do anything. Believe that.
Number 2: Torments
Severe physical pain. Suffering. Chronic agony. For example, a woman named Damaris came here for the Valentine’s Dinner. She has stage 4 cancer. I could tell she was in agony. She received the Gospel that night and was saved forever. I pray for her often to be healed. I know Jesus can heal her.
She is in torments and needs your prayers. Please pray for her.
Other people who have arthritis, chronic headaches, injuries from accidents, or diseases that cause persistent agony are included here. They are in torments. Severe inflammation. Chronic nerve pain. Torments. Jesus can heal them. The Bible says he did so right here in Matthew Chapter 4. Jesus is the healer of every hurt.
Number 3: Possessed with Devils
These people are spiritually oppressed with devils. This means they aren’t saved and devils have possessed them. A saved person can’t be possessed by a devil. Being possessed by a devil means that person is being controlled by an evil spirit. This happens. I’ve seen it.
We go out and talk to people often and there are people out there possessed with devils.
They will have violent outbursts, harm themselves, cut themselves, act irrational, have supernatural strength, unexplained seizures or fits. Jesus can heal all these things.
Number 4: Lunatick or Lunacy
Originally, the term lunatick, originally, was thought to be behaviors influenced by the moon. People who have periodic mental illness, seizures, epilepsy. But we know epilepsy is a neurological disorder. My wife, Pam, has epilepsy but she hasn’t had a seizure since she was 16 years old. They went away. Jesus can heal anything.
Lunatick means severe mental health disorders. Uncontrolled muscle spasms, sudden unconsciousness, convulsions, periodic insanity, mental illness episodes. Schizophrenia. Hallucinations. Altered perceptions of reality. Remember, these are diseases and sicknesses.
These are serious torments. They aren’t funny. We don’t make fun of people who have these issues. We pray for them that Jesus will heal them. Jesus is the healer of every hurt.
Number 5: The Palsy
This is paralysis. Palsy refers to a condition involving paralysis or loss of muscular control. This is often accompanied by weakness, tremors, or inability to move certain parts of the body. This can happen due to neurological damage, strokes, spinal cord injuries, or degenerative diseases.
Paralysis, inability to walk, loss of limb function, neurological impairment, stroke like symptoms, muscular weakness, trembling limbs.
Nothing is Too Difficult for Jesus to Heal
So, again, there’s a huge amount of sicknesses and diseases listed in those five categories. Nothing is too hard for the Lord. Jesus is the healer of every hurt. Whatever you have, whatever your children have, whatever your friends have, Jesus can heal. And we ask him for his healing power. Please heal these people, Jesus.
And because Jesus healed the people, more and more people followed him.
Matthew 4:25
And there followed him great multitudes of people from Galilee, and from Decapolis, and from Jerusalem, and from Judaea, and from beyond Jordan.
Great multitudes followed Jesus. The entire area was following him around. Thousands and thousands of people.
Remember, Jesus has all power and all authority over everything. Sometimes I don’t think we realize that. I don’t realize that at times. He has all authority and all power over absolutely everything.
All Authority and Power Examples
We see the examples within the Bible.
Jesus has authority over sickness and disease. He healed Peter’s mother in law of a fever. He healed the women with the issue of blood. The centurion’s servant was healed from a great distance. He healed the blind and the deaf. “And behold there came a leper and worshipped him, saying, Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean. And Jesus out forth his hand, and touched him, saying, I will; be thou clean. And immediately the leprosy was cleansed.”
Jesus has authority over demons, devils, and evil spirits. He cast out seven devils from Mary Magdalene who he loved greatly. He appeared to her first after he arose from the dead. He healed the boy with the dumb and deaf spirit. He cast out Legion, “For we are many.” He cast out devils. “And suffered not the devils to speak, because they knew him.” He is the Son of God and God in the flesh.
He has authority over nature: animals, the wind, and the seas. “Then he arose, and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm. But the men marvelled, saying, What manner of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him!”
Jesus Got Money from a Fish
He paid taxes by getting money out of the mouth of a fish. He multiplied the loaves of bread and the fish. He fed thousands with little. He caused a great catch of fish after they had caught nothing. Jesus turned water into wine.
Jesus has authority over sin and forgiveness. Jesus forgave the woman taken in adultery. “Neither do I condemn thee. Go and sin no more.” Jesus forgave the thief on the cross at the very end of his life. “Today shalt thou be with me in paradise.” Jesus forgave the man lowered through the roof. “And when he saw their faith, he said unto him, “Man, thy sins be forgiven thee.”
Jesus forgave and healed the man with palsy. “I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy bed, and go thy way into thine house.” And he got up. Praise God. Jesus forgives sin. “And he said unto her, Thy sins are forgiven.”
Remember, Jesus is the healer of every hurt. He has the authority. Trust him. Put it all, everything you’ve got, on the Lord Jesus Christ. He wants you to do that. He loves you. Remember, he has power and authority over all things.
Jesus has authority and power over death. He has authority over hell. He conquered death and hell for you. He raised Jairus’ daughter from the dead. “Ane he took the damsel by the hand, and said unto her, Damsel, I say unto thee, arise. And straightway the damsel arose, and walked.” She was twelve years old. People laughed at Jesus before he did the miracle. They stopped laughing.
Jesus Raised Himself from the Dead
This is real. Jesus arose himself from the dead. He was dead. And yet, he still raised himself from the dead.
John 2:19-22
Jesus answered and said unto them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up. 20 Then said the Jews, Forty and six years was this temple in building, and wilt thou rear it up in three days? 21 But he spake of the temple of his body. 22 When therefore he was risen from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this unto them; and they believed the scripture, and the word which Jesus had said.
I will raise it up. Jesus has authority over death. “And when he had thus spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth. And he that was dead came forth.” This is real. “And he came and touched the bier and said, Young man, I say unto thee, Arise. And he that was dead sat up and began to speak.”
Jesus has authority over his own life and resurrection from the dead. “Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again. No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again.”
Jesus Gave His Life for You
Jesus gave his life for you. Jesus has all authority and all power. Understand what that means. That’s everything. Have this faith in him. When we go out preaching the Gospel, I know that Jesus has power over that pit bull who wants to attack me. I know that he has power over the devils that are possessing the man who wants to shoot me. I have that faith.
He has all authority and he is here with us. “And Jesus came and spake unto them saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”
Jesus got up first. He went. He taught. He preached the Gospel. He healed the people. He delivered the people. The crowds of people followed him.
Jesus Has Compassion and Cares For You
Jesus has compassion, power, and authority to heal physically, spiritually, and emotionally. He can heal every type of illness and affliction. When I speak to many of you, I can see, with my eyes, the pain and hurt within you. I pray for you. I pray that Jesus heals you in every way.
Jesus is able and willing to heal, transform, and deliver you today. Come to Jesus Christ today with faith believing that he can meet every need that you have. Physical, emotional, and spiritual needs. We need Jesus Christ. He showed what he can do. He has all power.
Jesus is the healer of every hurt. Ask him today to heal you and believe that he can. I know that he can.
Let’s pray.
