[2] The title of the sermon: “The Genealogy of Jesus Christ.”

Jesus Christ Has No Father And No Mother

• We know and understand that Jesus Christ has no father or mother because He is God.
• He is from everlasting to everlasting. There is no beginning of days for Jesus Christ.
• There is no birth date for Jesus Christ as God Almighty.
• But Jesus lowered Himself so He could come to earth as a man.
• Jesus is called the Son of Man and the Son of God throughout the Bible. Both are true.

We know that Jesus Christ was conceived of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary.

• This means that Jesus Christ as the Son of man did not have an earthly father.
• Joseph was not his biological father. Joseph did care for Jesus as a father on this earth.
• But the child Jesus was conceived in Mary by the Holy Ghost or God Himself.
• This is why Jesus Christ is referred to as the Son of Man and the Son of God.
• He was conceived through a miracle.

We’re going to take a look at the genealogies of Jesus Christ today in detail and see what we can learn.

• We see His genealogy as the Son of Man in Matthew Chapter 1.
• And we see His genealogy as the Son of Man in Luke Chapter 3.
• In Matthew Chapter 1, we’re going to see the genealogy of Joseph.
• In Luke Chapter 3, we’re going to see the genealogy of Mary.
• Let’s start in Matthew Chapter 1 and see what we can learn today.

[3] Matthew 1:1-2 The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham. 2 Abraham begat Isaac; and Isaac begat Jacob; and Jacob begat Judas and his brethren;

• Jesus is known as the son of David the King of Israel.
• We know that the genealogy of Jesus is through the Israelites.
• King David is mentioned here as we know that Joseph came from the line of the Kings of Israel.
• We’ll see this as we go through this today.

The oldest person we see in this genealogy of Matthew Chapter 1 is Abraham.

• Abraham’s son in the line of Jesus Christ is Isaac.
• We know that Jesus will come from the line of Isaac because the Book of Genesis tells us this.
• Abraham actually had a son before Isaac who was named Ishmael.
• But Jesus would not come from the line of Ishmael.

[4] Genesis 17:19 And God said, Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son indeed; and thou shalt call his name Isaac: and I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his seed after him.

• The EVERLASTING covenant will be with Isaac the son of Abraham and Sarah.

[5] Genesis 21:12 And God said unto Abraham, Let it not be grievous in thy sight because of the lad, and because of thy bondwoman; in all that Sarah hath said unto thee, hearken unto her voice; for in Isaac shall thy seed be called.

[6] Romans 9:6-7 Not as though the word of God hath taken none effect. For they are not all Israel, which are of Israel: 7 Neither, because they are the seed of Abraham, are they all children: but, In Isaac shall thy seed be called.

[7] Hebrews 11:18 Of whom it was said, That in Isaac shall thy seed be called:

• “For in Isaac shall they seed be called.” We are called to be in Jesus Christ through FAITH.
• So, Abraham had faith, Isaac had faith, and now we move to Isaac’s son who had faith.
• Isaac’s son in this line is Jacob who is called Israel.
• Yes, Isaac had another son Esau but Jesus was not in his line.
• Esau had no faith, but Jacob had faith. We know that Jesus came from the line of Jacob.

[8] Genesis 25:24-26 And when her days to be delivered were fulfilled, behold, there were twins in her womb. 25 And the first came out red, all over like an hairy garment; and they called his name Esau. 26 And after that came his brother out, and his hand took hold on Esau’s heel; and his name was called Jacob: and Isaac was threescore years old when she bare them.

• We move forward in the genealogy of Jesus Christ with Jacob the son of Isaac.
• One of the 12 sons that Jacob has is named Judas or Judah.
• The 12 sons of Jacob formed the 12 tribes of Israel.
• If you remember, Jacob wanted to marry Rachel but was deceived into marrying Leah as well.
• Between Leah, Zilpah her handmaid, Rachel, and Bilhah her handmaid, Jacob had 12 sons.
• And they also had 1 daughter named Dinah for a total of 13 children.

The names of the 12 sons of Jacob or Israel were Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Dan, Naphtali, Gad, Asher, Issachar, Zebulun, Joseph, and Benjamin.

• Of all of those sons, the line of Jesus Christ came out of Judah.
• Was Judah the Godliest of the 12 sons? No, he wasn’t. That would have been Joseph.
• But Jesus didn’t come from the line of Joseph. He came from Judah.
• The Book of Genesis includes prophecy that Jesus will come from the line of Judah.
• Jacob gives this prophecy for his 12 sons in Genesis Chapter 49.

[9] Genesis 49:1-2 And Jacob called unto his sons, and said, Gather yourselves together, that I may tell you that which shall befall you in the last days. 2 Gather yourselves together, and hear, ye sons of Jacob; and hearken unto Israel your father.

• Skipping down to the prophecy for Judah in verses 8 through 12.

[10] Genesis 49:8-9 Judah, thou art he whom thy brethren shall praise: thy hand shall be in the neck of thine enemies; thy father’s children shall bow down before thee. 9 Judah is a lion’s whelp: from the prey, my son, thou art gone up: he stooped down, he couched as a lion, and as an old lion; who shall rouse him up?

[11] Genesis 49:10-12 The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be. 11 Binding his foal unto the vine, and his ass’s colt unto the choice vine; he washed his garments in wine, and his clothes in the blood of grapes: 12 His eyes shall be red with wine, and his teeth white with milk.

• This is prophesying about Jesus Christ. He is the LION of the tribe of Judah.

[12] Revelation 5:5 And one of the elders saith unto me, Weep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Juda, the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof.

• King David is of the tribe of Judah. Jesus is the root of David coming from Judah.
• So far, we know that Joseph’s genealogy of Jesus Christ is Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Judah.

Uh Oh! What Happened Here?

[13] Matthew 1:3 And Judas begat Phares and Zara of Thamar; and Phares begat Esrom; and Esrom begat Aram;

• Judah and Tamar have twins who are called Pharez and Zarah.
• Let’s see what happened with them from Genesis Chapter 38.

[14] Genesis 38:1-3 And it came to pass at that time, that Judah went down from his brethren, and turned in to a certain Adullamite, whose name was Hirah. 2 And Judah saw there a daughter of a certain Canaanite, whose name was Shuah; and he took her, and went in unto her. 3 And she conceived, and bare a son; and he called his name Er.

• Judah takes a Canaanite woman with the name of Shuah, which is actually the family name or last name.
• Jesus did not come from this wife of Shuah the Canaanite. Judah and her have Er the firstborn.

[15] Genesis 38:4-6 And she conceived again, and bare a son; and she called his name Onan. 5 And she yet again conceived, and bare a son; and called his name Shelah: and he was at Chezib, when she bare him. 6 And Judah took a wife for Er his firstborn, whose name was Tamar.

• Judah has Er, Onan, and Shelah as sons. Judah takes Tamar as a wife for his firstborn son Er.
• This is that same Tamar that Judah will have a child with later in the line of Jesus Christ.
• So, remember, Er and Tamar are now married.

[16] Genesis 38:7 And Er, Judah’s firstborn, was wicked in the sight of the LORD; and the LORD slew him.

• Er was wicked so God slews him and takes him out of the picture.

[17] Genesis 38:8 And Judah said unto Onan, Go in unto thy brother’s wife, and marry her, and raise up seed to thy brother.

• Judah tells Onan his second son to marry Tamar and have children with her.

[18] Genesis 38:9-10 And Onan knew that the seed should not be his; and it came to pass, when he went in unto his brother’s wife, that he spilled it on the ground, lest that he should give seed to his brother. 10 And the thing which he did displeased the LORD: wherefore he slew him also.

• Onan doesn’t do what Judah tells him to do and makes God angry. God takes Onan out too.
• So now Tamar has no husband again.

[19] Genesis 38:11 Then said Judah to Tamar his daughter in law, Remain a widow at thy father’s house, till Shelah my son be grown: for he said, Lest peradventure he die also, as his brethren did. And Tamar went and dwelt in her father’s house.

• Tamar is now going to wait for Shelah to be at a proper age for him to marry her.
• Tamar does as she is told.

[20] Genesis 38:12-13 And in process of time the daughter of Shuah Judah’s wife died; and Judah was comforted, and went up unto his sheepshearers to Timnath, he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite. 13 And it was told Tamar, saying, Behold thy father in law goeth up to Timnath to shear his sheep.

• The daughter of Shuah, who was Judah’s Canaanite wife, dies. Judah goes to Timnath for comfort.
• Tamar hears that Judah is going to Timnath to shear sheep.

[21] Genesis 38:14 And she put her widow’s garments off from her, and covered her with a vail, and wrapped herself, and sat in an open place, which is by the way to Timnath; for she saw that Shelah was grown, and she was not given unto him to wife.

• Shelah was not given to her as a husband as Judah had promised previously.
• She is tired of waiting so she is going to deceive Judah here.

[22] Genesis 38:15-16 When Judah saw her, he thought her to be an harlot; because she had covered her face. 16 And he turned unto her by the way, and said, Go to, I pray thee, let me come in unto thee; (for he knew not that she was his daughter in law.) And she said, What wilt thou give me, that thou mayest come in unto me?

• Judah was looking for a harlot or a whore. He believes Tamar to be what he’s looking for.
• This was his daughter in law, though, he didn’t know that.

[23] Genesis 38:17-18 And he said, I will send thee a kid from the flock. And she said, Wilt thou give me a pledge, till thou send it? 18 And he said, What pledge shall I give thee? And she said, Thy signet, and thy bracelets, and thy staff that is in thine hand. And he gave it her, and came in unto her, and she conceived by him.

• So now Tamar has conceived by Judah, but Judah doesn’t know it is Tamar.

[24] Genesis 38:24 And it came to pass about three months after, that it was told Judah, saying, Tamar thy daughter in law hath played the harlot; and also, behold, she is with child by whoredom. And Judah said, Bring her forth, and let her be burnt.

• So, of course, he can go do whatever he wants with harlots, but the woman must be burned.
• But he’s going to learn his lesson right here.

[25] Genesis 38:25-26 When she was brought forth, she sent to her father in law, saying, By the man, whose these are, am I with child: and she said, Discern, I pray thee, whose are these, the signet, and bracelets, and staff. 26 And Judah acknowledged them, and said, She hath been more righteous than I; because that I gave her not to Shelah my son. And he knew her again no more.

• He then acknowledges the truth here. He lied to Tamar about giving her Shelah.

[26] Genesis 38:27-28 And it came to pass in the time of her travail, that, behold, twins were in her womb. 28 And it came to pass, when she travailed, that the one put out his hand: and the midwife took and bound upon his hand a scarlet thread, saying, This came out first.

• So Tamar has twins in her womb from Judah. One of the hands come out first and a scarlet thread goes on the hand of that baby.

[27] Genesis 38:29 And it came to pass, as he drew back his hand, that, behold, his brother came out: and she said, How hast thou broken forth? this breach be upon thee: therefore his name was called Pharez.

• The baby with the scarlet thread on his hand is not the first born baby.
• PHAREZ is the one that comes out first in the line of Jesus Christ.

[28] Genesis 38:30 And afterward came out his brother, that had the scarlet thread upon his hand: and his name was called Zarah.

• So Judah and Tamar have twins called Pharez and Zarah.
• And keep in mind that all of what just happened is in the line of Jesus Christ the Son of Man.

[29] Matthew 1:3 And Judas begat Phares and Zara of Thamar; and Phares begat Esrom; and Esrom begat Aram;

• After Pharez, there is Esrom and Aram.

[30] Matthew 1:4-5 And Aram begat Aminadab; and Aminadab begat Naasson; and Naasson begat Salmon; 5 And Salmon begat Booz of Rachab; and Booz begat Obed of Ruth; and Obed begat Jesse;

• Now we see some names we should recognize here. Salmon and Rahab produce Boaz.
• Boaz and Ruth have a child named Obed. And then Obed has a son named Jesse.
• Remember, this is the book of the generation of Jesus Christ.
• What do we see here? We see Salmon and Rahab as the parents of Boaz that we see in the Book of Ruth.

[31] Joshua 2:1 And Joshua the son of Nun sent out of Shittim two men to spy secretly, saying, Go view the land, even Jericho. And they went, and came into an harlot’s house, named Rahab, and lodged there.

[32] Joshua 6:25 And Joshua saved Rahab the harlot alive, and her father’s household, and all that she had; and she dwelleth in Israel even unto this day; because she hid the messengers, which Joshua sent to spy out Jericho.

• Rahab was saved that day through her faith in God. She WAS a harlot but no more.

[33] Hebrews 11:31 By faith the harlot Rahab perished not with them that believed not, when she had received the spies with peace.

• Joshua saved her and her family that day because of her faith.
• And we see that she ends up marrying Salmon.
• Salmon and Rahab are the great, great grandparents of King David.
• Salmon and Rahab have Boaz. We see that Boaz marries Ruth in the Book of Ruth.
• Where does Ruth come from? Was Ruth an Israelite? No, she wasn’t.

[34] Ruth 4:9 And Boaz said unto the elders, and unto all the people, Ye are witnesses this day, that I have bought all that was Elimelech’s, and all that was Chilion’s and Mahlon’s, of the hand of Naomi.

[35] Ruth 4:10 Moreover Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of Mahlon, have I purchased to be my wife, to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance, that the name of the dead be not cut off from among his brethren, and from the gate of his place: ye are witnesses this day.

• Ruth was a Moabite.

[36] Ruth 4:11-12 And all the people that were in the gate, and the elders, said, We are witnesses. The LORD make the woman that is come into thine house like Rachel and like Leah, which two did build the house of Israel: and do thou worthily in Ephratah, and be famous in Beth-lehem: 12 And let thy house be like the house of Pharez, whom Tamar bare unto Judah, of the seed which the LORD shall give thee of this young woman.

• Ruth is going to be like Rachel and Leah and build the house of Israel through her faith in God.
• “And let thy house be like the house of Pharez, who Tamar bare unto Judah.”
• Ruth is going to continue this same line through to Jesus Christ.
• Boaz and Ruth have Obed their son who has Jesse who has King David.

Look Closely At The Women Mentioned In This Genealogy

But please notice the women mentioned in this genealogy. Who have we seen so far in Matthew Chapter 1?

• We’ve seen Tamar who has a child with her father-in-law Judah. Not good.
• We’ve seen Rahab the harlot. Being a harlot is not good.
• Would you expect the line of Jesus Christ to come from people like Judah who was seeking out harlots?
• No, but religious people especially don’t seem to see any of this. So-called “Christians” don’t see this.
• They believe that they are so perfect and that the people in the Bible were so perfect.
• NEW FLASH: They were not good. Many of them tried their best, such as David, but he wasn’t so great.
• Now we see Ruth who was a Moabite. And do you remember where the Moabites came from? Let’s see.

[37] Genesis 19:30-31 And Lot went up out of Zoar, and dwelt in the mountain, and his two daughters with him; for he feared to dwell in Zoar: and he dwelt in a cave, he and his two daughters. 31 And the firstborn said unto the younger, Our father is old, and there is not a man in the earth to come in unto us after the manner of all the earth:

[38] Genesis 19:32-33 Come, let us make our father drink wine, and we will lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father. 33 And they made their father drink wine that night: and the firstborn went in, and lay with her father; and he perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose.

[39] Genesis 19:34-35 And it came to pass on the morrow, that the firstborn said unto the younger, Behold, I lay yesternight with my father: let us make him drink wine this night also; and go thou in, and lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father. 35 And they made their father drink wine that night also: and the younger arose, and lay with him; and he perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose.

[40] Genesis 19:36-38 Thus were both the daughters of Lot with child by their father. 37 And the firstborn bare a son, and called his name Moab: the same is the father of the Moabites unto this day. 38 And the younger, she also bare a son, and called his name Ben-ammi: the same is the father of the children of Ammon unto this day.

• Lot and his oldest daughter have a child named Moab. That child was the father of the Moabites.
• Lot and his younger daughter have a child named Ben-ammi. That child was the father of the Ammonites.
• Ruth was a Moabite in the line of Lot and his oldest daughter. Were the Moabites known as Godly people.
• Let’s see.

[41] Numbers 25:1-3 And Israel abode in Shittim, and the people began to commit whoredom with the daughters of Moab. 2 And they called the people unto the sacrifices of their gods: and the people did eat, and bowed down to their gods. 3 And Israel joined himself unto Baal-peor: and the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel.

[42] Numbers 25:4-5 And the LORD said unto Moses, Take all the heads of the people, and hang them up before the LORD against the sun, that the fierce anger of the LORD may be turned away from Israel. 5 And Moses said unto the judges of Israel, Slay ye every one his men that were joined unto Baal-peor.

• It doesn’t matter who you are. GOD HATES THE WORSHIP OF FALSE GODS. He hates it.
• It doesn’t matter if you’re a Moabite or an American, God will be WROTH if you worship a false god.
• Ruth may have been a Moabite, but she did not worship a false god. She had faith in the one true God.
• You may remember king Eglon from the Book of Judges. The Moabites were not the children of Israel.

[43] Judges 3:12-13 And the children of Israel did evil again in the sight of the LORD: and the LORD strengthened Eglon the king of Moab against Israel, because they had done evil in the sight of the LORD. 13 And he gathered unto him the children of Ammon and Amalek, and went and smote Israel, and possessed the city of palm trees.

[44] Judges 3:14-15 So the children of Israel served Eglon the king of Moab eighteen years. 15 But when the children of Israel cried unto the LORD, the LORD raised them up a deliverer, Ehud the son of Gera, a Benjamite, a man lefthanded: and by him the children of Israel sent a present unto Eglon the king of Moab.

• Eglon was the very fat king that Ehud takes out. Eglon was the king of Moab.
• They were not friends of Israel AT ALL even though they came from Lot and his oldest daughter.
• And remember that Lot had these children living in Sodom. That should be a warning for you.
• The Moabites and the Ammonites turned to false gods. But Ruth was a Moabite of faith.

If you don’t think Ruth was saved and went to heaven, then something is wrong with you.

• But please realize this is the generation of Jesus Christ. No one was perfect. Do you see that?
• He even has a Moabite woman in this line of Joseph. But this Moabite woman had FAITH.
• What’s the one thing that God looks for in us? FAITH. It’s the one thing that He wants from us.
• Boaz and Ruth have Jesse. And who is Jesse? Let’s see.

[45] 1 Samuel 16:1 And the LORD said unto Samuel, How long wilt thou mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? fill thine horn with oil, and go, I will send thee to Jesse the Beth-lehemite: for I have provided me a king among his sons.

• Jesse lived in Bethlehem.

[46] 1 Samuel 16:2-3 And Samuel said, How can I go? if Saul hear it, he will kill me. And the LORD said, Take an heifer with thee, and say, I am come to sacrifice to the LORD. 3 And call Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will shew thee what thou shalt do: and thou shalt anoint unto me him whom I name unto thee.

[47] 1 Samuel 16:4-5 And Samuel did that which the LORD spake, and came to Beth-lehem. And the elders of the town trembled at his coming, and said, Comest thou peaceably? 5 And he said, Peaceably: I am come to sacrifice unto the LORD: sanctify yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice. And he sanctified Jesse and his sons, and called them to the sacrifice.

• Were all the sons of Jesse there so a new king could be selected? Let’s see.

[48] 1 Samuel 16:6-7 And it came to pass, when they were come, that he looked on Eliab, and said, Surely the LORD’S anointed is before him. 7 But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.

• It wasn’t Eliab the son of Jesse that God wanted. They were looking on the outside.
• So Jesse brings the greatest of his sons and God says, “No, I don’t think so.”
• When the younger generation here chooses a husband or a wife, why don’t you take God’s lead here?
• God doesn’t look on the outer appearance. He looks to the heart. Don’t choose by looks and appearance.
• What does Jesse do next when God tells Samuel no for his greatest son?

[49] 1 Samuel 16:8-10 Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, Neither hath the LORD chosen this. 9 Then Jesse made Shammah to pass by. And he said, Neither hath the LORD chosen this. 10 Again, Jesse made seven of his sons to pass before Samuel. And Samuel said unto Jesse, The LORD hath not chosen these.

• He brings all of his sons EXCEPT ONE to God. God says, “No, none of these are what I want.”
• Jesse didn’t even think to bring David in to see Samuel. David was the youngest son of Jesse.

[50] 1 Samuel 16:11 And Samuel said unto Jesse, Are here all thy children? And he said, There remaineth yet the youngest, and, behold, he keepeth the sheep. And Samuel said unto Jesse, Send and fetch him: for we will not sit down till he come hither.

[51] 1 Samuel 16:12 And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to. And the LORD said, Arise, anoint him: for this is he.

• Remember, God looks on the heart. Ruddy is lively or great health. He had a beautiful countenance.
• He was goodly to look to. And God said, “THIS IS HIM. THIS IS WHO I WANT. This is the next King of Israel.”
• So David wasn’t the best that Jesse thought he had. People will surprise you.
• The ones that look the best on the outside aren’t the best. It’s the inside that counts.
• The outside is just temporary. It’s just a shell. You shouldn’t love that shell of anyone.
• You should love the inside because the inside is what lasts forever.

The Goodness On The Inside Is What Matters

I’m sick of people who want to make fun of people with down syndrome or anything else similar.

• I would take a person with down syndrome as my best friend any day of the week, month, or year.
• Those people have what’s good on the inside. We have people who want to feel sorry for them.
• I sure don’t. I want more of what they have. They have joy about things. They are more like children.

Little children have joy about things. I want to be around joyful people. That joy comes from God.

• A person who has joy from the inside is beautiful to look at to God. That’s what we need to be like.
• Don’t look at the outside. David wasn’t the first choice. He was the last choice.
• He didn’t even get a chance to begin with. He was out working and taking care of the sheep.
• But we know that young David took out the Goliath because he had faith in God Almighty.
• David didn’t care how small he was. He was fierce on the inside. He knew God was there.

[52] Matthew 1:6 And Jesse begat David the king; and David the king begat Solomon of her that had been the wife of Urias;

• Bathsheba is the fourth and final woman called out here in this genealogy of Jesus Christ.
• Bathsheba had been the wife of Urias or Uriah who David had murdered. This is called out here.
• This happened in the genealogy of Jesus Christ. David wasn’t a perfect man. He had great sin.
• He committed adultery and had Uriah murdered. This is the line of Jesus Christ.
• David and Bathsheba have Solomon. Now we’re going to see more kings listed out here.
• David was first, then Solomon, and let’s see who is next.

[53] Matthew 1:7-11 And Solomon begat Roboam; and Roboam begat Abia; and Abia begat Asa; 8 And Asa begat Josaphat; and Josaphat begat Joram; and Joram begat Ozias; 9 And Ozias begat Joatham; and Joatham begat Achaz; and Achaz begat Ezekias; 10 And Ezekias begat Manasses; and Manasses begat Amon; and Amon begat Josias; 11 And Josias begat Jechonias and his brethren, about the time they were carried away to Babylon:

• These are all kings of Judah. After Solomon the kingdom was split into Israel in the North and Judah in the South.
• If you do a study of the kings of Judah, you’ll see that some of them are missing from this list.
• Ahaziah, Athaliah who was the evil mother of Ahaziah, Joash, and Amaziah are missing here.
• Why are they missing here? Probably because they are not legitimately in the line of King David.
• Some say there was a curse on Ahab. Some say it is because Jezebel is in that line.
• The only thing I am sure of at this time is: God removed their names from this genealogy.

Notice that they were carried away into Babylon. JUDAH WAS CONQUERED BY BAYLON.

• God punishes even this line of Jesus Christ for what they’ve done.
• Even these people don’t get a pass from God for what they’ve done. No one does. They were punished.
• And it started with King Solomon going after false gods.
• If the people throughout the generations of Jesus Christ were not even perfect, why do false religions keep acting like you must be perfect?
• God NEVER says that you must be perfect in your flesh to make it to heaven.
• He already knows if that were true, that not one man would have made it.
• That’s the entire reason He sent Jesus Christ to save us.

[54] Matthew 1:12-15 And after they were brought to Babylon, Jechonias begat Salathiel; and Salathiel begat Zorobabel; 13 And Zorobabel begat Abiud; and Abiud begat Eliakim; and Eliakim begat Azor; 14 And Azor begat Sadoc; and Sadoc begat Achim; and Achim begat Eliud; 15 And Eliud begat Eleazar; and Eleazar begat Matthan; and Matthan begat Jacob;

[55] Matthew 1:16 And Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.

• There’s all the generations of Jesus Christ from Abraham to Joseph.
• So, I have a handout here for you with the generations of Jesus Christ.

• While you’re taking a look at that, I want to read you the next Scriptures in Matthew Chapter 1.

[56] Matthew 1:17 So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; and from David until the carrying away into Babylon are fourteen generations; and from the carrying away into Babylon unto Christ are fourteen generations.

• Abraham to David is 14 generations. David to Josias is 14 generations.
• Jechonias to Jesus Christ is 14 generations.
• Notice this includes all the kings that had a right to the throne.
• Joseph the carpenter is in this line of kings with the right to the throne.
• Jesus was supposed to be the son of Joseph and had the right to the throne.
• Now, let’s go to Luke Chapter 3 to see the generations of Jesus Christ through Mary.

[57] Luke 3:23-24 And Jesus himself began to be about thirty years of age, being (as was supposed) the son of Joseph, which was the son of Heli, 24 Which was the son of Matthat, which was the son of Levi, which was the son of Melchi, which was the son of Janna, which was the son of Joseph,

• The genealogy is in reverse order. We’re starting with Jesus Christ and going older and older.
• And you can see this in the handout I gave you there for Luke Chapter 3.
• We’re going from Jesus Christ all the way back to Adam.

[58] Luke 3:25-26 Which was the son of Mattathias, which was the son of Amos, which was the son of Naum, which was the son of Esli, which was the son of Nagge, 26 Which was the son of Maath, which was the son of Mattathias, which was the son of Semei, which was the son of Joseph, which was the son of Juda,

[59] Luke 3:27-28 Which was the son of Joanna, which was the son of Rhesa, which was the son of Zorobabel, which was the son of Salathiel, which was the son of Neri, 28 Which was the son of Melchi, which was the son of Addi, which was the son of Cosam, which was the son of Elmodam, which was the son of Er,

[60] Luke 3:29-30 Which was the son of Jose, which was the son of Eliezer, which was the son of Jorim, which was the son of Matthat, which was the son of Levi, 30 Which was the son of Simeon, which was the son of Juda, which was the son of Joseph, which was the son of Jonan, which was the son of Eliakim,

[61] Luke 3:31 Which was the son of Melea, which was the son of Menan, which was the son of Mattatha, which was the son of Nathan, which was the son of David,

• Now we see David and his son Nathan. Two of king David’s sons were Solomon and Nathan.
• Joseph came from Solomon’s line. Mary is coming from Nathan’s line.
• Both Joseph and Mary are from the tribe of Judah. They are directly from King David’s line.
• David and Bathsheba had both Solomon and Nathan.

[62] 1 Chronicles 3:5 And these were born unto him in Jerusalem; Shimea, and Shobab, and Nathan, and Solomon, four, of Bath-shua the daughter of Ammiel:

• Once you get to King David, the line for both Joseph and Mary is the same all the way to Adam.
• It was only different when you get to Solomon and Nathan. And there are many generations between.

[63] Luke 3:32-33 Which was the son of Jesse, which was the son of Obed, which was the son of Booz, which was the son of Salmon, which was the son of Naasson, 33 Which was the son of Aminadab, which was the son of Aram, which was the son of Esrom, which was the son of Phares, which was the son of Juda,

• Now we’re seeing all of the same names in reverse order that we saw in Matthew Chapter 1.
• We see Judah, Phares, Esrom, Aram, Aminadab, Naasson, Salmon, Boaz, Obed, and Jesse.

[64] Luke 3:34 Which was the son of Jacob, which was the son of Isaac, which was the son of Abraham, which was the son of Thara, which was the son of Nachor,

• Remember, Matthew Chapter 1 started with Abraham.
• In Luke Chapter 3, we’re going back more than that. Thara is Abraham’s father.
• Nahor was Terah’s father.

[65] Genesis 11:24-26 And Nahor lived nine and twenty years, and begat Terah: 25 And Nahor lived after he begat Terah an hundred and nineteen years, and begat sons and daughters. 26 And Terah lived seventy years, and begat Abram, Nahor, and Haran.

[66] Genesis 11:27 Now these are the generations of Terah: Terah begat Abram, Nahor, and Haran; and Haran begat Lot.

• Some people might ask, “Why are you going over all of these genealogies?”
• I’ll tell you why. Because God put them in the Bible, and we’re going to study them.
• These are not endless genealogies and striving about them. These are important.
• God put them all here for a reason. We can even get the approximate age of the earth from them.
• There are many other reasons they are there as well. These genealogies are for us to study.

Lot Is Abraham’s Nephew

Nahor, Terah, then Abraham. Abraham’s brother Haran has Lot as a child.

• This means Lot is Abraham’s nephew. Lot was not Abraham’s brother but was his nephew.
• Haran was Lot’s father.

[67] Genesis 11:28 And Haran died before his father Terah in the land of his nativity, in Ur of the Chaldees.

• Lot’s father died. Terah, Abraham’s dad, takes Abraham, Lot, and Sarah to the land of Canaan.
• That’s why Abraham and Lot were so close for a long time.
• These genealogies help us to understand what was happening in many books of the Bible.

[68] Luke 3:34-35 Which was the son of Jacob, which was the son of Isaac, which was the son of Abraham, which was the son of Thara, which was the son of Nachor, 35 Which was the son of Saruch, which was the son of Ragau, which was the son of Phalec, which was the son of Heber, which was the son of Sala,

[69] Luke 3:36 Which was the son of Cainan, which was the son of Arphaxad, which was the son of Sem, which was the son of Noe, which was the son of Lamech,

• Now we see Shem who was one of Noah’s three sons.
• Abraham didn’t come from Japheth or Ham, the wicked one.

[70] Genesis 9:24-26 And Noah awoke from his wine, and knew what his younger son had done unto him. 25 And he said, Cursed be Canaan; a servant of servants shall he be unto his brethren. 26 And he said, Blessed be the LORD God of Shem; and Canaan shall be his servant.

• Canaan was the son of Ham. Canaan shall serve Shem. Abraham came from Shem’s line.
• Jesus Christ came from Abraham’s line through Shem. Shem was saved. His God was the Lord God.

[71] Luke 3:37-38 Which was the son of Mathusala, which was the son of Enoch, which was the son of Jared, which was the son of Maleleel, which was the son of Cainan, 38 Which was the son of Enos, which was the son of Seth, which was the son of Adam, which was the son of God.

• Adam didn’t have a dad like we do. Adam was the son of God. He wasn’t born or a woman.

[72] 1 Corinthians 15:42-45 So also is the resurrection of the dead. It is sown in corruption; it is raised in incorruption: 43 It is sown in dishonour; it is raised in glory: it is sown in weakness; it is raised in power: 44 It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body. 45 And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit.

• The first Adam was sown in corruption. He was the son of God. He was a sinner.
• He was sown in dishonor. He had a natural body from the earth just like you and I.
• Jesus Christ is the last Adam.

He took all of our corruption, including Adam’s, and was raised in incorruption.

• We are sown in dishonor and raised in glory by the blood of Jesus Christ.
• We are sown in weakness and raised in power by Jesus Christ.
• We are given a natural body but will be raised a spiritual body at the first resurrection or rapture.
• The first Adam was made a living soul and the last Adam was made a quickening spirit.
• The resurrection of the dead is the same. We will be raised as a quickening spirit of incorruption.
• This genealogy of Jesus Christ is important to understand.
• All of the people listed in that genealogy were not “good” people in their flesh.
• It’s extremely easy to see this. We see that Judah was not the godliest of people.

We see Thamar was not the godliest of women. She deceived Judah into laying with her.

• We see Rahab was a harlot. We see Ruth was a Moabite. Did that stop God from loving any of them?
• Did God love all of them no matter what? No, He didn’t. Why did God love Ruth?
• Why does Ruth have a book in the Bible? She loved God. She had faith in God.
• What about Rahab? God loved Rahab because she simply had faith in God.
• They weren’t the greatest people. Why did God love David? Was it because he murdered Uriah?
• David messed up. David made mistakes. Bathsheba must have been a woman of great faith.
• She had Solomon and Nathan. Joseph and Mary came from David and Bathsheba.
• You need to see this and understand that there are no perfect people.

There Are Only 2 Groups Of People In This World

But there are 2 groups of people in the Bible: THE WICKED AND THE RIGHTEOUS.

• The wicked never have faith in God. The righteous have faith in God. That’s it.
• You can mess up every day of your life, as you most likely will, and still go to heaven with righteousness.
• Is it your righteousness? No, it’s not. It’s the righteousness of Jesus Christ.
• Now, does that mean that it’s okay to sin? “Well, Abraham did this. David did that. Paul did this.”
• Some people use the men and women in the Bible as excuses to sin. They do.
• That’s exactly why we aren’t supposed to follow after the men and women of this world.
• We’re supposed to follow after Jesus Christ who never sinned.

[73] John 5:14 Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said unto him, Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee.

[74] John 8:11 She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.

[75] Proverbs 28:13 He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.

• God doesn’t want us to sin. It’s not okay to sin. Our souls are saved but our flesh is not.
• Confess your sins to God and forsake those sins. Do your best to stop those sins.

[76] Isaiah 1:16 Wash you, make you clean; put away the evil of your doings from before mine eyes; cease to do evil;

• God wants us to cast away all of our sin. He never says it is okay to sin. PUT AWAY THE EVIL.
• He wants us to follow Him who has no sin.
• So, we don’t use the men and women in the genealogy of Jesus Christ as excuses to sin.
• But we do take these genealogies for what they teach us.
• We are not perfect people who never sin. We mess up all the time and the genealogy of Jesus Christ shows us that.
