Matthew 4:8-11
After Jesus was baptized, he was tempted in different ways by Satan. When you’re trying to do right, you will be tempted in different ways by Satan. Jesus perfectly passed those tests. Other people in the Bible perfectly passed those tests. Other people in the Bible failed those tests.
So, whatever happens, stay faithful to God through these temptations. Keep reading your Bible. Keep studying your Bible. Keep coming to church to hear and learn the word of God. Don’t fall back. Don’t stop.
After Jesus was tempted by Satan, I want you to see what happened. I want to focus on what happened so that you have hope through the difficult times in your life.
Matthew 4:8-11
Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them; 9 And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me. 10 Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. 11 Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him.
Angels Minister To Jesus Christ
We’re going to focus in on verse 11 there for the entire lesson. I want to read that verse again. Please take a close look.
Matthew 4:11
Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him.
I want to talk about angels. Angels came and ministered unto him. So, are angels real? The Bible, the word of God, the word of truth, the perfect and Holy Scriptures, say: “Angels came and ministered unto him.” Angels came and served him, supplied him, and comforted him.
Mark 1:13
And he was there in the wilderness forty days, tempted of Satan; and was with the wild beasts; and the angels ministered unto him.
So we have another witness in the Bible saying that angels came and ministered unto Jesus. When do we see the angels come to Jesus? Just after he’s had much trouble. Just after he’s been through a difficult trial.
Angels Come When Jesus Was Battling Temptation
We see this again in another one of the Gospels. One of the biggest tests Jesus had was in the Garden of Gethsemane. Do you remember what happened to him in the Garden of Gethsemane? I want you to see this. Look closely at these words.
Luke 22:39-41
And he came out, and went, as he was wont, to the mount of Olives; and his disciples also followed him. 40 And when he was at the place, he said unto them, Pray that ye enter not into temptation. 41 And he was withdrawn from them about a stone’s cast, and kneeled down, and prayed,
Luke 22:42-44
Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done. 43 And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him. 44 And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground.
Jesus was in so much agony that his sweat was as it were great drops of blood. Look at verse 43 again. “And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him.”
Angels are Real Because The Bible Says So
So, please listen, angels are real. They are ministering spirits. They minister to you. They help you. An angel came to Jesus to strengthen him. Why? He’s the Son of God. He’s God in the flesh. This flesh makes us weak. Jesus came in this same flesh and blood like us. He needed to be strengthened because of the even bigger trial that was happening next.
He was going to be betrayed that night. He was going to trial. He was going to be sentenced to death. He was going to be beaten, whipped, mocked, spit on, a crown of thorns on his head, and nailed to the cross through his hands and feet. He was going to hang on that cross slowly dying for six hours. He needed the be strengthened. He was in agony.
You are going to have tough times in your life. Some of those tough times can be avoided by avoiding sin. Sin causes you to have much trouble. For example, doing drugs is a great sin. Drinking alcohol is a great sin. Buying lottery tickets is sin. It’s a waste of money. Save that money for things you need.
Sin will bring you great trouble. Jesus wasn’t a sinner. Yet, he went through great trials and tribulation. When you are doing right, you will still have trouble. The evil in this world will resist you doing good.
Remember that God Has Angels to Help You
When you’re doing right, and you’re going through difficult trials, I want you to remember that angels are real. Always choose right, and God will send angels to minister to you. They will help you.
Hebrews 1:14
Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?
So, please listen, the angels weren’t just for Jesus. Hebrews Chapter 1, right there, says: “Are they not all ministering spirits?” They are sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation. If you have believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, that’s speaking of you. You’re saved. The angels are sent forth to minister unto you when you’re having trials and tribulations.
This is one advantage of being a child of God. There are good angels or good spirits and there are bad angels or evil spirits. How do I know this? This is taught throughout the Bible. I want to teach you about angels in this lesson today. We’re going to learn more. Most churches never teach this or anything like this.
We learned last week that angels do protect us. Guardian angels are real.
Angels Do Protect Us
Psalm 91:11-12
For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways. 12 They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.
Now, this is why you always want to be doing right. When you’re doing right, you get protection. When you’re doing wrong, you aren’t getting protection. So, don’t do wrong. You always want to be on God’s side. Always be doing the work of God in your life.
Psalm 34:6-7
This poor man cried, and the LORD heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles. 7 The angel of the LORD encampeth round about them that fear him, and delivereth them.
When you fear God, you do what God asks you to do. When you sin against God, this means you have no fear of God. God delivers you out of trials and troubles when you are doing what he asks you to do.
How many angels are out there?
Matthew 26:53
Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to my Father, and he shall presently give me more than twelve legions of angels?
Angels Are More Powerful Than Us
I am not exactly sure how many angels are in a legion. It could be six thousand. But we know it’s a lot. And angels are more powerful than humans. Jesus can easily just pray to his Father in heaven, and he will give him, instantly, twelve legions of angels. That’s a lot of angels that you don’t want to mess with. You definitely want the angels on your side. Not against you.
Revelation 5:11
And I beheld, and I heard the voice of many angels round about the throne and the beasts and the elders: and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands;
Look at this Scripture because it gives you a good idea of how many angels there are in existence. There are at least this many angels. Around the throne in heave, in Revelation Chapter 5, we see ten thousand times ten thousand plus thousands of thousands more.
If any of you are good at math, you can do ten thousand times ten thousand. There are four zeros in 10,000. When you multiply ten thousand time ten thousand you add the 4 and 4 zeros together to get eight zeros. The answer is 100 million angels plus thousands of thousands. One thousand times one thousand is 1 million.
How Many Angels Are There in Existence?
So, there’s at least 100 million angels plus millions more in heaven when Revelation Chapter 5 is happening. In this world, there are about 8 billion people now. When you divide that by 100 million, there would be 1 angel to every 80 people. But there are more than 100 million angels.
When just one angel shows up and God allows that angel to be seen by human eyes, there is fear and trembling.
Matthew 28:2-4
And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it. 3 His countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow: 4 And for fear of him the keepers did shake, and became as dead men.
When this angel showed up, the keepers did shake and became as dead men.
Job 4:13-17
In thoughts from the visions of the night, when deep sleep falleth on men, 14 Fear came upon me, and trembling, which made all my bones to shake. 15 Then a spirit passed before my face; the hair of my flesh stood up: 16 It stood still, but I could not discern the form thereof: an image was before mine eyes, there was silence, and I heard a voice, saying, 17 Shall mortal man be more just than God? shall a man be more pure than his maker?
An Angel or Spirit Passed By Job and He Was Afraid
A spirit passed by Job. That would be an angel. The hair stood up on his body. Fear came upon Job. He trembled. His bones throughout his body shook.
If we could see the spiritual world, we would be very afraid. It’s all around us.
You have to understand the power of God. This earth is huge. Mountains are huge. The more you see, the more you will know the power of God. The more you study God’s creation, the more you will see his greatness. The higher you go above the earth, the more you’ll see. The higher you ascend into the heavens, more of his greatness and power you will see.
God created the angels and they are fearful. We need to know who we are. We are just human. We are weak. We are flesh and blood. This is weak. We can easily die. A car wreck can kill us in an instant. And angel cannot die like that. So, they are far more powerful than us.
They have multiple faces. They have wings. They are spirits.
Satan is an Angel or Covering Cherub
Satan is an angel. He is not flesh and blood. He is a spirit. You can’t see him. He is an evil angel. He didn’t start out that way. He was close to God. The Bible says he was a covering cherub. Satan is stronger than you. Satan knows more than you.
Ezekiel 28:14-15
Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire. 15 Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee.
Ezekiel 28:16
By the multitude of thy merchandise they have filled the midst of thee with violence, and thou hast sinned: therefore I will cast thee as profane out of the mountain of God: and I will destroy thee, O covering cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire.
Satan is powerful. He was a covering cherub at the throne of God. He was perfect in his ways from that day God created him. You have to understand that Satan is an angel that was created by God. Jesus is infinite times more powerful than Satan. Satan will come at you to destroy you.
But God says to Satan, “I will destroy thee, O covering cherub.” A cherub is an angel. Satan was close to God. He was one of the angels that covered the throne of God with his wings.
God Is Far More Powerful Than Satan and All His Angels
But always remember that God is far more powerful than Satan. When you’re going through trouble, remember God. Remember Jesus Christ. Trust God. Trust Jesus. They’ve got you. The evil in this world comes at you often, but stick to God and his ways. And you will be protected. God has hundreds of millions of good angels working for him.
An angel from the Lord comes and appears to Daniel in Daniel Chapter 10. Watch this.
Daniel 10:11-12
And he said unto me, O Daniel, a man greatly beloved, understand the words that I speak unto thee, and stand upright: for unto thee am I now sent. And when he had spoken this word unto me, I stood trembling. 12 Then said he unto me, Fear not, Daniel: for from the first day that thou didst set thine heart to understand, and to chasten thyself before thy God, thy words were heard, and I am come for thy words.
Daniel is trembling as this angel speaks with him.
Daniel 10:13-15
But the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me one and twenty days: but, lo, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me; and I remained there with the kings of Persia. 14 Now I am come to make thee understand what shall befall thy people in the latter days: for yet the vision is for many days. 15 And when he had spoken such words unto me, I set my face toward the ground, and I became dumb.
The Good Angels vs. The Evil Angels
This good angel is battling an evil angel. “But the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me one and twenty days.” He battles for 21 days. Michael the archangel came and helped him. There is a battle going on out there that we can’t see.
We know it’s there. Angels are battling. It’s good versus evil. Listen, this is very important. Stay on the good side. If you go over to the evil side, you’re going against God and his angels. Don’t do that.
Fight through the trials and tribulations. Know that God has angels to help you. There are guardian angels. They are here to minister to you. They are here to help you.
You can see this when Jesus is tempted by Satan.
Matthew 4:10-11
Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. 11 Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him.
Remember, God doesn’t tempt you to sin. Satan and the evil angels of this world tempt you to sin. Remember, the fight is not against flesh and blood. Let me repeat that. The fight is not against your neighbors. The fight is not against Donald Trump and Elon Musk. The fight is not against Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. The fight is not against the Democrats and Republicans.
The Battle is a Spiritual Battle
Ephesians 6:12
For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
Our fight is not against each other. It is not against flesh and blood.
The fight is in the spiritual world. We are on the front line of that battle. God put us here to fight that battle. He’s got us. He’ll take care of us. We get threatened with these trials and tribulations. But we’re going right through them. Don’t step back. Keep on moving forward.
Get stronger. Get better with God. Don’t take that step back.
The fight is the fight we’ve taken on here. And we will be attacked. We’ve been getting attacked since we got here. Life has gotten harder. Much harder. But we aren’t fighting each other. We aren’t attacking each other. We’re sticking together through the trials and troubles. We will make it through by faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.
Have faith and know that we win the fight. Why? Because God wins. His angels win. The evil ones will be destroyed. Keep up the good fight. Choose right in your life. And God will send his angels to minister to you.
Don’t give up. Don’t quit. Jesus didn’t quit. Be like Jesus. He keeps going on forever.
Let’s pray.
