[2] The title of the sermon today is “JOHN CHAPTER 19.”

Jesus And His Disciples Go Over The Brook Kidron

• Before we move to John Chapter 19, let’s go over a quick summary of the last chapter.
• In John Chapter 18, we see Jesus and his disciples leave Jerusalem and go out over the brook Kidron.
• They go into a garden together. We see Judas Iscariot come into this garden with a band of officers.
• These officers were from the chief priests and Pharisees.

Do you remember what they were carrying with them? Lanterns, torches, and weapons.

• They think their weapons are going to help them capture Jesus Christ.
• And Jesus never broke a law. He wasn’t a criminal, but they come to Him like He was a criminal.
• When they come to take Jesus, do you remember what happened? Let’s read it together.

[3] John 18:4-6 Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth, and said unto them, Whom seek ye? 5 They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith unto them, I am he. And Judas also, which betrayed him, stood with them. 6 As soon then as he had said unto them, I am he, they went backward, and fell to the ground.

• Jesus says, “I AM HE” and they fall backwards to the ground. The words of Jesus are pure power.
• Jesus asks them again, “Who are looking for?” I love that part.
• He asks them the first time: “WHOM SEEK YE?” They say, “Jesus of Nazareth.”
• He says, “I AM HE.” They fall down backwards when He says I AM HE. Jesus asks again, “Whom seek ye?”
• They say again, “Jesus of Nazareth.” Jesus tells them to take Him and leave His disciples alone.
• They comply with that request. Peter had already drew his sword and cuts off the right ear of Malchus.
• Jesus tells Peter to put his sword away because this is His Father’s will. Don’t fight against God’s will.

[4] John 18:12-13 Then the band and the captain and officers of the Jews took Jesus, and bound him, 13 And led him away to Annas first; for he was father in law to Caiaphas, which was the high priest that same year.

• We see Jesus go to Annas first and then to Caiaphas the high priest.
• If you remember, Caiaphas is the one who prophesied about one man dying for all the people.
• Caiaphas thought he was going to kill Jesus so all the Jews would be saved from Jesus.
• He didn’t understand that Jesus was going to die for all the people and save the people who believe on Him.

As Jesus is led away, we see Peter and most likely John follow Jesus into the palace of the high priest.

• John goes on inside with Jesus. Peter stands outside the door. John goes back and brings Peter inside.
• The damsel who was the doorkeeper recognizes Peter as one of the disciples of Jesus.
• She asks Peter if he is a disciple of Jesus. Peter says, “No I’m not.”
• Peter stood inside with the enemies of Jesus warming himself by the fire. It was cold outside.
• We see the high priest asking Jesus about his disciples and his doctrine.

[5] John 18:20-21 Jesus answered him, I spake openly to the world; I ever taught in the synagogue, and in the temple, whither the Jews always resort; and in secret have I said nothing. 21 Why askest thou me? ask them which heard me, what I have said unto them: behold, they know what I said.

• Right after this answer, one of the officers of the chief priest smacks Jesus.
• He says, “Do you think you can talk like that to our high priest?”
• I feel bad for the man who smacked Jesus Christ. Not good. Jesus speaks boldly to people.
• He’s not afraid of anyone. You should follow that same pattern. Be bold and speak truth at all times.
• Jesus responds, “If I spoke evil, bear witness of the evil I spoke.”
• “If I didn’t speak evil, then why did you hit me?”

We then see Peter deny Jesus a second time. He does so to the people standing there at the fire with him.

• But one of the near kinsman to the man who had his ear cut off recognized Peter.
• “Aren’t you that man I saw in the garden with Jesus?” Peter denied a third time.

[6] John 18:27 Peter then denied again: and immediately the cock crew.

• They then take Jesus from the palace of the high priest to the Roman hall of judgement.
• They didn’t want to defile themselves while eating the Passover.

Pilate comes out and says, “What has this man done wrong against our laws?” They couldn’t answer.

• They tell Pilate that Jesus should be put to death, and it’s not lawful for them to do so.
• Pilate then questions Jesus and finds nothing wrong. Jesus didn’t break any laws.
• Jesus is not worthy of death. Jesus tells Pilate this His kingdom is not of this world.
• Pilate says, “Oh, so you are a king because you do have a kingdom?” Jesus says, “That’s what you said.”
• Pilate tells the Jews that he’s found nothing wrong with Jesus.

Pilate goes out to the Jews and says, “Your custom is to release one person to you at Passover.”

• “Do you want to release Jesus the King of the Jews?” They say, “No, release Barabbas the robber.”
• So they choose a known criminal over the perfect Lord Jesus Christ.
• And people today are doing the same thing. The churches are doing the same thing.
• When they ignore the words of the Bible, that’s what they’re doing. “We don’t want Jesus.”
• With that quick summary of John Chapter 18, let’s start there in verse 1 of John Chapter 19.

[7] John 19:1 Then Pilate therefore took Jesus, and scourged him.

• The Jews made their choice. They wanted Jesus dead. Pilate therefore listened to the Jews.
• Pilate gave them what they wanted. Some people will say that Pilate didn’t sin. That’s a lie.
• Pilate found that Jesus did nothing wrong.
• And the Bible tells us that Pilate knew they delivered Jesus up because of envy.

Pilate Did Evil By Crucifying Jesus

Pilate did evil by crucifying Jesus because he knew Jesus was a just man who had done nothing wrong.

• In your life, don’t be like Pilate. DO THE RIGHT THING.
• When you know something is wrong, don’t keep going. Don’t fear any man. Fear God.
• Pilate did what he knew was wrong. Don’t be like Pilate.
• He’s now responsible for crucifying Jesus as well as the Jews.
• Pilate took Jesus and scourged Him. Scourge means to whip, lash, punish severely. They beat Jesus.

[8] Psalm 129:3 The plowers plowed upon my back: they made long their furrows.

• They plowed out his back. To furrow means to make a long narrow channel or groove.
• They whipped Him and scourged Him. Who did this? The Romans or the Gentiles.
• Notice that the Jews delivered Him up but the Gentiles beat Him and scourged Him. Both peoples.

[9] Isaiah 50:6 I gave my back to the smiters, and my cheeks to them that plucked off the hair: I hid not my face from shame and spitting.

• This is prophesying about Jesus Christ. He gave Himself up. He gave His back to the smiters.
• They beat Him. Notice what else they did. Jesus gave His cheeks to them that plucked off the hair.
• Let me ask you all a question. Where are your cheeks?
• This is talking about the cheeks on the face of Jesus. It says they plucked off the hair from his cheeks.
• That’s painful, but what does that mean? That means Jesus had a beard. He had hair on His face.

Why do the independent fundamental Baptist and other denominations teach you shouldn’t have facial hair?

• Jesus had facial hair, but all those Baptists think they are better than Jesus.
• They act just like the Jews when they didn’t want to defile their Passover but kill Jesus.
• Just like with all the other traditions of men within these religions. There’s nothing wrong with a beard.
• If Jesus had one, I’ll have one. The Bible 100% without a doubt says that Jesus had a beard.

[10] 2 Samuel 10:4 Wherefore Hanun took David’s servants, and shaved off the one half of their beards, and cut off their garments in the middle, even to their buttocks, and sent them away.

• David’s servants had a beard. They had half of their beards shaved off in shame.

[11] 2 Samuel 10:5 When they told it unto David, he sent to meet them, because the men were greatly ashamed: and the king said, Tarry at Jericho until your beards be grown, and then return.

• David wouldn’t let those men back into the city because they were greatly ashamed about their beards.
• David says, “Stay in Jericho UNTIL your beards be grown. Then you can come back.”

[12] Isaiah 15:2 He is gone up to Bajith, and to Dibon, the high places, to weep: Moab shall howl over Nebo, and over Medeba: on all their heads shall be baldness, and every beard cut off.

• Beards being cut off is not a good thing. The Bible describes it in this way.

[13] 1 Samuel 21:13 And he changed his behaviour before them, and feigned himself mad in their hands, and scrabbled on the doors of the gate, and let his spittle fall down upon his beard.

• That’s King David. He had a beard.

[14] 2 Samuel 19:24 And Mephibosheth the son of Saul came down to meet the king, and had neither dressed his feet, nor trimmed his beard, nor washed his clothes, from the day the king departed until the day he came again in peace.

• The son of Saul, Mephibosheth had a beard.

[15] 2 Samuel 20:9 And Joab said to Amasa, Art thou in health, my brother? And Joab took Amasa by the beard with the right hand to kiss him.

• Amasa had a beard. Do you see all of the men who had beards?

[16] Ezra 9:3 And when I heard this thing, I rent my garment and my mantle, and plucked off the hair of my head and of my beard, and sat down astonied.

• Ezra had a beard. He has a book in the Bible named after him.

[17] Psalm 133:2 It is like the precious ointment upon the head, that ran down upon the beard, even Aaron’s beard: that went down to the skirts of his garments;

• Aaron, the brother of Moses, had a beard. Is it bad to have a beard like the Baptists say?
• That should end the argument. But they still want to preach against beards. Are you serious?
• Jesus had a beard. Does Jesus command us that we better have a beard? No, He doesn’t.
• But definitely you must be ignorant of the Bible to preach against men having beards.
• Jesus had one and the Romans plucked out his beard. Back to John Chapter 19.

[18] John 19:2-3 And the soldiers platted a crown of thorns, and put it on his head, and they put on him a purple robe, 3 And said, Hail, King of the Jews! and they smote him with their hands.

• Picture this in your head. They just beat Jesus badly. Ripped furrows out of His back.
• They ripped out the hairs of his beard. Jesus didn’t hide His face while they did this.
• They put a crown of thorns on His head. They put a purple robe on Him, which signifies royalty.
• And they say, “HAIL, KING OF THE JEWS!!!” while they smote Him with their hands.
• They hit Him the entire time they’re saying “Hail, King of the Jews.”
• They’re mocking Him, beating Him, hitting Him, making fun of Jesus.
• Notice that verse 2 says that they put a purple robe on Jesus. Remember, every word of God is true.

[19] Matthew 27:27-29 Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the common hall, and gathered unto him the whole band of soldiers. 28 And they stripped him, and put on him a scarlet robe. 29 And when they had platted a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand: and they bowed the knee before him, and mocked him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews!

• Verse 28 in Matthew Chapter 27 says they put on Him a scarlet robe. This is dark red color.
• That means they put a purple robe on Jesus. And they put a scarlet robe on Jesus.
• Purple is the royal color of a King. Jesus, our King, in purple with all of our scarlet colored sins upon Him.
• That’s what I think about when I hear the color of the 2 robes.
• We see this same story in John Chapter 19, Matthew Chapter 27, Mark Chapter 15, and Luke Chapter 23.

[20] John 19:4-5 Pilate therefore went forth again, and saith unto them, Behold, I bring him forth to you, that ye may know that I find no fault in him. 5 Then came Jesus forth, wearing the crown of thorns, and the purple robe. And Pilate saith unto them, Behold the man!

• Pilate allows all of this to continue. He brings forth Jesus beaten and mocked.
• Pilate is still trying to tell the Jews that he finds no fault AT ALL within this man.
• He tells them this over and over and over again. He’s trying to say, “I beat this man. This is enough.”
• “Look at Him. I found no fault but yet I beat this man because you wanted this.”
• BEHOLD THE MAN! John the Baptist did a much better job introducing Jesus than Pilate does.

John The Baptist Does A Much Better Job

[21] John 1:29 The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.

[22] John 1:34 And I saw, and bare record that this is the Son of God.

[23] John 1:36 And looking upon Jesus as he walked, he saith, Behold the Lamb of God!

• John the Baptist says, “BEHOLD THE LAMB OF GOD. THIS IS “THE” SON OF GOD.”
• Pilate brings forth Jesus beaten and says, “Behold the man. Here’s Jesus. This is what you wanted.”

[24] John 19:6 When the chief priests therefore and officers saw him, they cried out, saying, Crucify him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Take ye him, and crucify him: for I find no fault in him.

• The chief priests and officers of the Jews cry out to CRUCIFY Jesus.
• Pilate says, “If you want this man dead, you take Him and crucify Him. I FIND NO FAULT IN HIM.”
• How many times does Pilate have to tell them? He’s said I find ZERO fault in this man.

[25] John 19:7 The Jews answered him, We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God.

• The Jews weren’t in power. Their law didn’t matter to the Roman law. But they keep pushing Pilate.
• And put yourself in Pilate’s shoes right here. Let’s say you had no idea who this man was.
• Let’s say you had no idea who God was. You just beat this man that has done nothing wrong.
• And then you hear them say, “He ought to die because He made Himself the Son of God.”
• Wouldn’t you probably take a big GULP? “Uh oh. Who did you say this man is? The Son of God?”
• There is none higher than that. What if they would have said, “This is Caesar’s son.”
• Pilate would have dropped everything, got him out of there, and crucified all the Jews instead.
• Pilate was working for Caesar the king of the Romans.

[26] John 19:8-9 When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he was the more afraid; 9 And went again into the judgment hall, and saith unto Jesus, Whence art thou? But Jesus gave him no answer.

• So, at least Pilate is afraid, but he doesn’t stop everything like he would have if this was Caesar’s son.
• He doesn’t understand that this is THE SON OF GOD. That should have scared Pilate to death.
• If you’re going to mess with someone, you sure don’t mess with the Son of God.
• What does Pilate do? He walks back into the judgment hall with Jesus.
• He asks, ”Whence art thou?” In other words, “Where are you from, Jesus?”
• But Jesus doesn’t respond to Pilate.

[27] Psalm 38:12-14 They also that seek after my life lay snares for me: and they that seek my hurt speak mischievous things, and imagine deceits all the day long. 13 But I, as a deaf man, heard not; and I was as a dumb man that openeth not his mouth. 14 Thus I was as a man that heareth not, and in whose mouth are no reproofs.

• Jesus did not speak a word back to Pilate.

[28] Isaiah 53:7 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth.

• What was happening right here with Pilate had to happen. It is written in the Scriptures.
• Of course, Jesus isn’t going to answer Pilate.
• Jesus isn’t trying to stop this crucifixion. He is willingly giving Himself up to die for the people.

[29] John 19:10 Then saith Pilate unto him, Speakest thou not unto me? knowest thou not that I have power to crucify thee, and have power to release thee?

• With these questions, though, Jesus is going to answer. He has something to say right here.
• Pilate says that he has the power to crucify Him and the power to release Him.
• Pilate is saying, “Why won’t you to speak to me? I can get you out of this, Jesus. I have that power.”
• And watch what Jesus says to Pilate.

[30] John 19:11 Jesus answered, Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above: therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin.

• God can take power away from anyone He wants at any time. Jesus, God in the flesh, is there right now.
• Pilate doesn’t have any power at all over Jesus. No man does.
• The only way this was happening is that Jesus was allowing it to happen.
• And notice that Jesus says Pilate is sinning right now.
• The ones who delivered Jesus to Pilate, though, have the greater sin.
• If you think all sin is equal, it’s not. What Jesus just said, should end that argument.

“Well, we’re all sinners so you can’t say anything to me because I know you’re a sinner too.”

• We are all sinners, but that doesn’t make sin okay.
• People who say things like that just want to keep sinning.
• We need to help each other by preaching against sin because you aren’t getting by with it anyway.
• Just because someone doesn’t tell you here doesn’t mean you get by with it. God is watching.

[31] Romans 14:12 So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God.

• If you didn’t know you were doing something wrong, wouldn’t you want someone to tell you?
• For example, if I’m doing something wrong according to God’s word, I want you to tell me.
• I won’t get mad at you. I need your help. That’s we’re all here. We are to help each other.
• There are different levels of sin.

[32] Matthew 5:28 But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.

• The actual act of adultery is far worse than looking at a woman with lust. There’s no doubt about that.
• The punishment is far greater for the actual act. But they’re both sin. The act, though, is the greater sin.
• And Jesus tells Pilate that he is sinning, but the Jews who delivered Him have the greater sin.
• Jesus just told Pilate that he would have no power at all against Him unless that power was given from heaven.
• Watch Pilate’s reaction here in verse 12 of John Chapter 19.

[33] John 19:12 And from thenceforth Pilate sought to release him: but the Jews cried out, saying, If thou let this man go, thou art not Caesar’s friend: whosoever maketh himself a king speaketh against Caesar.

• After Pilate heard the words Jesus spoke, he wanted to release Jesus.
• But not so fast. The evil Jews come in and change his mind. They scare Pilate by saying what?
• They tell Pilate that Jesus has made Himself a King.
• And since Jesus made Himself a King, He is automatically against the Roman king named Caesar.

Pilate Fears Man Over God

“PILATE, IF YOU LET JESUS GO, YOU ARE NOT A FRIEND OF CAESAR.”

• In other words, “If you let Jesus go, we’ll go to Caesar and let him know what you did.”
• Let’s see, the RUTHLESS Roman king named Caesar OR the Son of God Almighty who is all powerful?
• Who would you fear? Most people will fear the human king because they’re scared of being put to death.

[34] Matthew 10:28 And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

• No matter what in your life, never fear man. ALWAYS FEAR GOD. Man can only kill your body.
• And you might say, “Yeah, that’s easy to say, but I don’t want to die.”
• You have to wake up. There is more to this life. Your body is going to die sometime.
• Don’t betray God in the meantime because you fear what man can do to you.
• Don’t bow down to a false god because they threaten to throw you in a fiery furnace.
• Instead, fear GOD because He’s not only able to kill your body but He can throw your soul into hell.
• What does Pilate choose here? Well, let’s see.

[35] John 19:13 When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he brought Jesus forth, and sat down in the judgment seat in a place that is called the Pavement, but in the Hebrew, Gabbatha.

• Pilate is continuing with the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. He feared Caesar more than God.
• He brings forth Jesus to place called THE PAVEMENT but in Hebrew it’s called Gabbatha.
• This is probably a paved area with stones. But notice that Pilate doesn’t fear God. He fears man.

[36] Proverbs 29:25 The fear of man bringeth a snare: but whoso putteth his trust in the LORD shall be safe.

• Pilate sure isn’t safe. He allowed the fear of man to bring a snare or a trap to him.
• And it wasn’t just Jesus who warned Pilate prior to this. Do you remember who else warned Pilate?

[37] Matthew 27:19 When he was set down on the judgment seat, his wife sent unto him, saying, Have thou nothing to do with that just man: for I have suffered many things this day in a dream because of him.

• The wife of Pilate says, “Have nothing to do with that JUST man. He hasn’t done anything wrong.”
• She has a dream showing her that Jesus is a JUST man. He’s done nothing wrong.
• Pilate doesn’t listen, though. He already knows that Jesus hasn’t done anything wrong.
• But his wife warns him. He doesn’t listen. He keeps going even though he knows it’s wrong.
• He only continues because he fears man over God.

[38] John 19:14-15 And it was the preparation of the passover, and about the sixth hour: and he saith unto the Jews, Behold your King! 15 But they cried out, Away with him, away with him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Shall I crucify your King? The chief priests answered, We have no king but Caesar.

• We’ve went over the timing of the death of Jesus Christ before and all the details of that timing.
• If you’re interested in that, go to the sermons page on the website and find “The Lord’s Supper.”
• You’ll find all of those details within those sermons. But notice verse 14 says, “About the sixth hour.”
• This is 6 AM in the morning. Remember, their days start at 6 PM, from even to even.
• From midnight, though, is 6 hours. 6 AM is the sixth hour here in the Book of John.
• All of these things prior to this were happening in the dark through the night and early morning hours.
• This is Passover day when all of these things are happening in John Chapter 19.

Pilate brings Jesus out early in the morning and says, “JEWS, BEHOLD YOUR KING!”

• Again, he’s trying to give them their King back but they don’t want anything to do with God’s King.
• They said, “Away with Him, away with Him, crucify Him, kill Him.”
• Pilate says, “You want me to crucify your King?” They say, “Caesar is our king.”
• They won’t stand up for God. God isn’t their King. They’ve chosen a worldly king. They are of the world.
• Do you remember when the Israelites wanted an earthly king versus God’s way of ruling?

[39] 1 Samuel 8:4-6 Then all the elders of Israel gathered themselves together, and came to Samuel unto Ramah, 5 And said unto him, Behold, thou art old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways: now make us a king to judge us like all the nations. 6 But the thing displeased Samuel, when they said, Give us a king to judge us. And Samuel prayed unto the LORD.

[40] 1 Samuel 8:7-8 And the LORD said unto Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee: for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me, that I should not reign over them. 8 According to all the works which they have done since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt even unto this day, wherewith they have forsaken me, and served other gods, so do they also unto thee.

• The people didn’t want God’s way of ruling. They didn’t want Him. They wanted an earthly king.
• Is that not dumb? Give us a king they said. They didn’t want God ruling over them.
• Same thing here. They rejected God Almighty again. That’s what the Israelites do all throughout the Bible.
• AGAIN, they are rejecting God. And what happens when you reject God too many times?
• Yes, He will reject you. The entire Bible teaches this from cover to cover.
• They say, “This Jesus isn’t our king. We don’t want Him back. Kill Him.”

[41] John 19:16-18 Then delivered he him therefore unto them to be crucified. And they took Jesus, and led him away. 17 And he bearing his cross went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha: 18 Where they crucified him, and two other with him, on either side one, and Jesus in the midst.

• Pilate gave them what they wanted. They lead Jesus away to be crucified. Jesus doesn’t object at all.
• He’s just like an innocent lamb that doesn’t object when it’s being taken away to be slaughtered.
• Jesus picks up His cross and bears the cross. They head towards a place called the place of a skull.
• At some point, a man from Cyrene, named Simon carries the cross for Jesus.

[42] Matthew 27:32-34 And as they came out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name: him they compelled to bear his cross. 33 And when they were come unto a place called Golgotha, that is to say, a place of a skull, 34 They gave him vinegar to drink mingled with gall: and when he had tasted thereof, he would not drink.

• Golgotha is where Jesus was crucified. Matthew, Mark, and John calls the place Golgotha.
• You’ve probably heard of Calvary before. Is Golgotha and Calvary the same place?

[43] Luke 23:33 And when they were come to the place, which is called Calvary, there they crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand, and the other on the left.

• Golgotha and Calvary are the same place. They put Jesus in the middle of the two malefactors.
• These other two are worthy of death. Jesus wasn’t. We’re all worthy of death too. I am worthy of death.
• But Jesus right there in the middle? He wasn’t worthy of death. He was innocent.
• He is the perfect Lamb of God. And He was doing this right now at this moment for you.
• He’s doing this to save you. He’s doing this so you can one day be in heaven with Him.

[44] John 19:19 And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross. And the writing was, JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS.

[45] Matthew 27:37 And set up over his head his accusation written, THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.

[46] Mark 15:26 And the superscription of his accusation was written over, THE KING OF THE JEWS.

[47] Luke 23:38 And a superscription also was written over him in letters of Greek, and Latin, and Hebrew, THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.

• The 4 Gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, show different words for what was written.
• But then we see that they were written in 3 different languages. “THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.”
• Pilate writes this title for Jesus on the actual cross.

Jesus Is Crucified Near To The City

[48] John 19:20 This title then read many of the Jews: for the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city: and it was written in Hebrew, and Greek, and Latin.

• 3 languages were written on the cross. Hebrew, Greek, and Latin.
• Jesus was crucified nigh to the city OR near to the city of Jerusalem.

• There’s many arguments over these locations so I have no idea which is right.
• But you can see the Brook Kidron running along the right side there.
• On the upper right, you’ll see the Garden of Gethsemane where Jesus is taken by Judas Iscariot.
• On the lower left over there, you’ll see the house of the high priest.
• And then you’ll see on the upper left, Golgotha. There’s arguments over exactly where it is located.
• But, we do know for sure that it’s near the city of Jerusalem.

[50] John 19:21-22 Then said the chief priests of the Jews to Pilate, Write not, The King of the Jews; but that he said, I am King of the Jews. 22 Pilate answered, What I have written I have written.

• The Jews read what Pilate wrote. They didn’t like him calling Jesus the King of the Jews.
• Pilate says, “That’s what I wrote, and I’m not changing it.” The Jews already said, “He’s not our King.”
• And if He’s not their King, what does that mean? They don’t have God.
• The Jews, in general, in Israel today HATE the Lord Jesus Christ. They are children of the devil.
• They are not God’s children. Why? Because they won’t believe on the Lord Jesus Christ.

[51] John 19:23 Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments, and made four parts, to every soldier a part; and also his coat: now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout.

• They crucified Jesus meaning they put Him on the cross. Jesus wasn’t dead at this point.
• They took His clothing and made 4 parts out of His clothing. They did the same to His coat.
• The coat was without seam and woven throughout.
• The high priest also wore a similar coat in Exodus Chapter 28.

[52] Exodus 28:32 And there shall be an hole in the top of it, in the midst thereof: it shall have a binding of woven work round about the hole of it, as it were the hole of an habergeon, that it be not rent.

• Jesus is “THE” high priest. Jesus is “THE ONE” who forgives sin.
• All of those things in the Old Testament were a picture of things to come.
• All of those things you’ll see in Exodus and Leviticus are very important to understand.
• Notice that Jesus didn’t have a single piece of clothing like the dress that sodomite artists draw Him with.
• He had “GARMENTS” and He wore a “COAT” as well. There are inner garments and outer garments.
• But one thing I know for sure. Jesus didn’t wear a one piece robe of dress. Not a chance. ZERO CHANCE.

[53] John 19:24 They said therefore among themselves, Let us not rend it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be: that the scripture might be fulfilled, which saith, They parted my raiment among them, and for my vesture they did cast lots. These things therefore the soldiers did.

• They didn’t tear it at all. They cast lots for it. Why did they do that? So the Scriptures would be fulfilled.
• THE SCRIPTURES MUST BE FULFILLED. Do you know what’s written in the Book of Revelation?
• You can’t change those future events. THEY WILL HAPPEN. Just like right here in John Chapter 19.
• What Scripture is this speaking about right there? It’s got to be in the Old Testament.

[54] Psalm 22:16-18 For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have inclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet. 17 I may tell all my bones: they look and stare upon me. 18 They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture.

• Psalm Chapter 22 is being fulfilled right here in John Chapter 19.

[55] John 19:25 Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene.

• There’s a lot of arguing over this Bible verse too. Standing there by the cross of Jesus are 4 women.
• Some will say, “NO, THERE’S ONLY 3 WOMEN THERE.”
• Mary, the mother of Jesus, most likely doesn’t have a sister named Mary because her name is Mary.
• But this could mean sister in law. So it’s tough to say if it’s 3 or 4 women here.
• I won’t spend a lot of time on this, but notice Mary the wife of Cleophas. Do you remember that name?
• See if you might remember his name now with this Scripture.

[56] Luke 24:15-17 And it came to pass, that, while they communed together and reasoned, Jesus himself drew near, and went with them. 16 But their eyes were holden that they should not know him. 17 And he said unto them, What manner of communications are these that ye have one to another, as ye walk, and are sad?

• This is after Jesus arose from the dead, and they are walking around very sadly.

[57] Luke 24:18 And the one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answering said unto him, Art thou only a stranger in Jerusalem, and hast not known the things which are come to pass there in these days?

• This is most likely that same Cleopas. And Mary the wife of Cleophas was standing there at the cross.

[58] John 19:26-27 When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son! 27 Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home.

• Jesus sees Mary His mother and John, who He loved, standing near to the cross.
• He looks at Mary and says, “Woman, behold thy son.” He’s not talking about Himself.
• He’s looking at John. He then looks at John and says, “Behold thy mother.”
• And from that hour, John took Mary the mother of Jesus into his home as one of His.
• Now it’s John’s job to take care of Mary. Jesus cared for His mother.
• He was making sure she was going to be taken care of and Jesus trusted John to do so.

Was Joseph Still Alive At This Time?

We can’t say for sure, but this means Joseph most likely wasn’t alive at this time.

• I personally don’t believe that Joseph was alive because Jesus is THE King of the Jews.
• Jesus had a right to the throne from the line of Joseph through King Solomon.
• I think Jesus had the right to that throne while He was alive there on earth.
• And again, I could be wrong on that because it’s not written in the Scriptures.
• But Jesus gives John the job of taking care of His mother Mary. She was most likely a widow.

[59] John 19:28-29 After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst. 29 Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a spunge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth.

• Jesus says, “I’m thirsty.” He says this so the Scriptures will be fulfilled.
• They give Him vinegar upon hyssop and put this into the mouth of Jesus.
• Supposedly hyssop is a plant with a bitter taste and cleansing properties. What Scripture does this fulfill?

[60] Psalm 69:21 They gave me also gall for my meat; and in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.

• They give Jesus vinegar to drink. Earlier they tried to give Him vinegar mixed with gall.
• He tasted of that earlier but wouldn’t drink it. Now, He receives the vinegar.
• And, if you know your Bible well, you’ll know what happens next.

[61] John 19:30 When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.

• If you’re with me right now, that should hurt.
• When someone you love greatly dies, it hurts. But, we know this already happened. But it still hurts.
• The perfect Lamb of God went to that cross and died for you and I because He loves us.
• We might not have yelled for Pilate to crucify Jesus but we are the cause.
• Jesus says, “IT IS FINISHED.” He bows His head and gives up the ghost or the spirit or the life within Him.

[62] John 17:4 I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do.

• Jesus had finished all the work that God gave Him to do before He died there on the cross.
• He wasn’t finished with all the work. The blood of Jesus forgives us of sin. He is the sacrifice for our sins.
• But the soul of Jesus went to hell for 3 days and 3 nights. And Jesus was going to arise from the dead.
• Just prior to the death of Jesus, the land went dark for 3 hours. Jesus dies around 3 PM that day
• This was the Passover day and Jesus was crucified on the Passover. He is the Passover Lamb.
• He is that sacrifice for our sins. His sacrifice saves all of those who believe on His name.

[63] John 19:31 The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.

• The next day after the Passover is the first day of the feast of unleavened bread.
• That day is a sabbath day no matter what day of the week it falls on. Remember, we’re at 3 PM.
• At 6 PM, the next day starts. The body of Jesus wouldn’t hang past 6 PM.
• The Jews wanted to go ahead and break the legs of Jesus so He could be taken away sooner.
• But, if you remember, will any bone within the body of Jesus be broken? Let’s see as we keep going.

[64] John 19:32-33 Then came the soldiers, and brake the legs of the first, and of the other which was crucified with him. 33 But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs:

• They broke the legs of the others so they would die sooner.
• Jesus was dead already so they didn’t break His legs.

[65] John 19:34 But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water.

• Obviously, Jesus is dead 100% for sure. Out comes blood and water from our Lord Jesus Christ.

[66] 1 John 5:6-8 This is he that came by water and blood, even Jesus Christ; not by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit is truth. 7 For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one. 8 And there are three that bear witness in earth, the spirit, and the water, and the blood: and these three agree in one.

• Water and blood came out when Jesus was pierced in his side by that spear. His spirit had left His body.
• That blood of Jesus is the reason we can have forgiveness of sins. It is a requirement.
• I want you to see this from Hebrews Chapter 9.

[67] Hebrews 9:19-20 For when Moses had spoken every precept to all the people according to the law, he took the blood of calves and of goats, with water, and scarlet wool, and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book, and all the people, 20 Saying, This is the blood of the testament which God hath enjoined unto you.

[68] Hebrews 9:21-22 Moreover he sprinkled with blood both the tabernacle, and all the vessels of the ministry. 22 And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.

• Without the shedding of blood, there is no remission of sins.
• So many false “Christian” denominations believe they are having their sins forgiven by being baptized.
• Your baptism doesn’t forgive you of sins. A work of yours doesn’t forgive sin.
• There is no shedding of blood in baptism. You are ONLY forgiven through the sacrifice Jesus made for you.
• Jesus is THE only way to be saved. You can’t do it through any number of works.
• You MUST simply accept the work that Jesus did for you. He paid it all for you.
• That means you don’t owe any work to Him. You simply change your mind and believe on Him alone.
• If you add your baptism to salvation, you aren’t trusting Jesus alone. You’ve added yourself to it.

[69] John 19:35 And he that saw it bare record, and his record is true: and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye might believe.

• John is writing this and he’s saying, “Hey, I watched this with my own eyes.”
• You need to understand that John saw this happen. He’s telling you right here and right now.
• This record is true. And he’s telling you this so you might believe.
• And believing you will receive eternal life. Jesus died for you. Trust Jesus. He did it for you. Believe.

There Was Not One Bone Of Jesus Broken

[70] John 19:36 For these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken.

• Not a bone of Jesus was broken. Not one. We see the Passover Lamb in Exodus Chapter 12.

[71] Exodus 12:46 In one house shall it be eaten; thou shalt not carry forth ought of the flesh abroad out of the house; neither shall ye break a bone thereof.

• I hope you’re starting to see how the Old and New Testaments are perfectly aligned.

[72] Numbers 9:12 They shall leave none of it unto the morning, nor break any bone of it: according to all the ordinances of the passover they shall keep it.

[73] Psalm 22:14 I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint: my heart is like wax; it is melted in the midst of my bowels.

• His bones were out of joint, but they weren’t broken.

[74] Psalm 34:20 He keepeth all his bones: not one of them is broken.

• Not one bone of Jesus Christ was broken. The Scriptures must be fulfilled.

[75] John 19:37 And again another scripture saith, They shall look on him whom they pierced.

• They looked upon Jesus. Where is this in the Scriptures?

[76] Psalm 22:17 I may tell all my bones: they look and stare upon me.

[77] Zechariah 12:10 And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn.

[78] Revelation 1:7 Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen.

• All those who pierced Jesus will see Him. Every eye shall see Him when He comes with clouds.
• It won’t be a secret like the movies say. EVERY EYE SHALL SEE HIM when He comes in the clouds.

[79] John 19:38 And after this Joseph of Arimathaea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, besought Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus: and Pilate gave him leave. He came therefore, and took the body of Jesus.

• Matthew Chapter 27 tells us a rich man from Arimathaea comes to take the body of Jesus.
• He does this secretly because of fear of the Jews. Pilate allows him to do so.
• This man was a disciples of Jesus.

[80] John 19:39 And there came also Nicodemus, which at the first came to Jesus by night, and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound weight.

• Do you see that? Nicodemus from John Chapter 3. YOU MUST BE BORN AGAIN, NICODEMUS!!!
• Nicodemus says, “What are you talking about Jesus?” You must be born of the Spirit, Nicodemus.
• Do you think Nicodemus was saved? I do. Jesus preached it to Him and now Nicodemus is there for Jesus.
• 100 pounds weight of myrrh and aloes for the body of Jesus. I guarantee that was a lot of money there.

[81] Proverbs 7:17 I have perfumed my bed with myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon.

[82] Psalm 45:7-8 Thou lovest righteousness, and hatest wickedness: therefore God, thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows. 8 All thy garments smell of myrrh, and aloes, and cassia, out of the ivory palaces, whereby they have made thee glad.

• So Nicodemus loved Jesus and is taking care of His body here.

[83] John 19:40 Then took they the body of Jesus, and wound it in linen clothes with the spices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury.

• They took His body, with the spices, and would His body in linen clothes.

[84] John 19:41 Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden; and in the garden a new sepulchre, wherein was never man yet laid.

• No man had ever been laid in this sepulchre or tomb.
• When they find the linen cloths from Jesus laying there after His resurrection, they can’t say it was from someone else.

[85] John 19:42 There laid they Jesus therefore because of the Jews’ preparation day; for the sepulchre was nigh at hand.

• They came quickly, took Jesus, and buried Him because of the upcoming Sabbath day at 6 PM.
• That tomb was very close, and this allowed them to bury Jesus in time for the Sabbath day.
• At the end of John Chapter 19, we see the body Jesus is now buried in the tomb.
• And I can’t wait to go over what happens next.
