[2] The title of the sermon today is “JOHN CHAPTER 13.”

Jesus Went To Bethany Six Days Before Passover

• In John Chapter 12, we saw Jesus come to Bethany 6 days before the Passover. This is where Lazarus lived.
• Who else lived there? Mary and Martha. They are both sisters to Lazarus.
• We saw Mary anoint the feet of Jesus with a pound of very costly ointment.
• Judas Iscariot didn’t like it because he thought Mary should do something different with her possessions.
• Judas Iscariot wanted to sell the ointment and get the money for it. He was a thief.
• He acted like he wanted to give the poor the money, but he could care less about the poor.
• Jesus tells Judas Iscariot to leave Mary alone about the ointment. She was doing this for Jesus.

We see that the chief priests want to put Jesus to death as well as Lazarus. Why is that?

• Many people were believing on Jesus because of Lazarus.
• People are coming from everywhere to see Jesus Christ at the Passover.
• Then we see that Jesus comes riding into Jerusalem on an ass’s colt.

[3] John 12:12-15 On the next day much people that were come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, 13 Took branches of palm trees, and went forth to meet him, and cried, Hosanna: Blessed is the King of Israel that cometh in the name of the Lord. 14 And Jesus, when he had found a young ass, sat thereon; as it is written, 15 Fear not, daughter of Sion: behold, thy King cometh, sitting on an ass’s colt.

• It is written in the Scriptures that this would happen. The King would come riding upon the foal of an ass.
• This is written in Zechariah Chapter 9.
• The Pharisees get even more angry because more people are going after Jesus.
• We see Greeks that weren’t Jews coming to see Jesus in John Chapter 12.
• We see Jesus begin to preach when He hears that the Greeks want to see Jesus.

[4] John 12:24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit.

• Do you remember what a corn of wheat looks like? Here’s a picture.

• If a corn of wheat doesn’t fall into the ground and die, it’s not going to produce more fruit.
• Jesus is prophesying right there in John Chapter 12 of His death and how His death will bring more fruit.
• Think of how much a corn of wheat multiplies. One little corn of wheat produces so much fruit.
• Same thing with Jesus Christ. He’s going to die for you and I, and we are a part of that fruit.
• Because He died and was buried in the ground, He produced amazing amounts of fruit.

We learned that we’re to serve Jesus and lose our life for Him. He set the example.

• He died for you. He doesn’t ask you to do anything that He hasn’t done already.
• We saw that the soul of Jesus was troubled because dying physically is trouble to all people.
• Some people say, “I don’t care if I die. I’m not scared of dying.” Yeah right.
• When it comes down to it, you will be troubled about dying.
• We saw Jesus talk to His Father, and the voice of His Father coming down and talking with Him.

The Pharisees Wanted Jesus Dead

The Pharisees wanted to kill Jesus more and more. They though killing Jesus would stop Him.

• But we all know that Jesus spread more and more because of His death.
• The Pharisees didn’t think Jesus would be coming back from the dead.
• But Jesus had just brought Lazarus back from the dead. And they still wouldn’t believe.

[6] John 12:32 And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me.

• Notice what that says. Jesus will draw ALL MEN unto Him. He calls every person to Him.
• He gives every person a chance to be saved. Calvinists say that God doesn’t choose everyone.
• That Scripture, which is perfectly preserved, says different. Every person has chances to be saved.
• We’ve seen Jesus do so many miracles so far in the Book of John and the people still won’t believe.
• When you continuously reject Jesus over and over, He can reject you and blind you.
• The entire Bible tells us this. There can be a point where God rejects a person.
• And at that point, that person can never be saved. That’s a decision God makes and He’s perfect.

[7] John 12:39-40 Therefore they could not believe, because that Esaias said again, 40 He hath blinded their eyes, and hardened their heart; that they should not see with their eyes, nor understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal them.

• And again, notice that being saved is all about believing on Jesus.
• That verse says that they could not believe and therefore could not be converted.
• At the end of John Chapter 12, we saw Jesus tell us that the words He speaks are His Father’s words.
• And the words that He speaks are life everlasting. He is the Word of God, and He is God.
• With that quick summary, let’s move into verse 1 of John Chapter 13.

[8] John 13:1 Now before the feast of the passover, when Jesus knew that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end.

• We’re coming up to the point of the Last Supper here in John Chapter 13.
• That means this is the day before Jesus is killed on the Passover. So, this is the before the Passover.
• Jesus is love. And what is love? Love is following God’s commandments. Why is that love?
• Because doing what God asks will never include doing evil to another person. Never.
• Jesus always loves, and He loves His own which were and are in the world. He’s watching out for you.
• If you’ve believed on Jesus, then you’re one of His own.

[9] John 13:2 And supper being ended, the devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray him;

• Judas Iscariot is going to betray Jesus Christ. Judas sits there and acts like he’s a friend of Jesus.
• Supper was over, and that old serpent puts some betrayal and evil into the heart of Judas Iscariot.
• Jesus already knew that Judas Iscariot was going to betray Him. You see this back in John Chapter 6.

[10] John 6:70-71 Jesus answered them, Have not I chosen you twelve, and one of you is a devil? 71 He spake of Judas Iscariot the son of Simon: for he it was that should betray him, being one of the twelve.

• That was said after Jesus “He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him.”
• Many of the people following Jesus walked with Him no more after He says those things.
• His words offended people. And Jesus already knew that Judas Iscariot would betray Him.
• And that betrayal is about to happen soon.

[11] John 13:3-4 Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he was come from God, and went to God; 4 He riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself.

• God the Father has given all things into the hands of Jesus. Jesus came from God and went to God.
• Right now He’s sitting on the right hand of His Father in heaven, but one day He’s coming back again.
• After supper on this night, Jesus rises up. He lays His garments aside, takes a towel, and girds Himself.
• He lays His outer clothing aside and girding yourself with a towel is what a servant would do.
• He’s about to wash the feet of the disciples.

[12] John 13:5 After that he poureth water into a bason, and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded.

• You have the greatest King to ever step on this earth washing His disciples feet.
• He isn’t just the greatest King to step on this earth; HE MADE THE EARTH. And He’s washing feet.

[13] John 13:6-7 Then cometh he to Simon Peter: and Peter saith unto him, Lord, dost thou wash my feet? 7 Jesus answered and said unto him, What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereafter.

• We know that we aren’t worthy to have Jesus wash our feet, but He serves us every day.
• He provides for us every day. He takes care of us.
• As a Dad, I’m a servant for my wife and children because I’m working hard each day to take care of them.
• Well, look, that’s what Jesus does for us BUT at a much greater and a much higher level.
• Peter says, “Lord, you’re going to wash my feet???” Jesus says, “You’ll know why hereafter.”

One Day We’ll Understand More About God’s Actions

We don’t understand a lot of things that God does, but one day we’ll understand.

• You might say, “God, how could you allow my child to die? God, how can you allow all of this pain?”
• We need to understand that we aren’t on God’s level, and we aren’t going to understand everything.
• But we need to realize that God knows what He’s doing. He’s in control, and He knows what He’s doing.

[14] Job 40:1-2 Moreover the LORD answered Job, and said, 2 Shall he that contendeth with the Almighty instruct him? he that reproveth God, let him answer it.

• We can question each other. I want you to question me on what I preach. I want to make sure it’s right.
• But look, we can’t question the ALMIGHTY GOD. He knows what He’s doing.
• We might say, “Well, I don’t care. That’s not right. He could put a stop to all of this.”
• No, people could put a stop to all of this if they would believe God and do what He says.
• Peter doesn’t stop, though. He continues telling Jesus to not wash his feet.

[15] John 13:8 Peter saith unto him, Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me.

• Washing their feet is an act of cleansing them. The actual act of washing feet doesn’t save anyone.
• But Jesus is giving a picture of them being cleansed by Jesus.
• You MUST be cleansed of all your sin by Jesus Christ OR you’ll never be cleansed of all your sin.
• “If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me.” Do you hear that today? That is the Gospel.
• Either Jesus saves you and washes you from your sin, OR you aren’t saved.
• Your baptism doesn’t cleanse you from sin. Jesus cleanses you from sin.
• Peter says, “Thou shalt never wash my feet.” But watch what happens.
• I love the next part because this is one of the best things Peter ever says.

[16] John 13:9 Simon Peter saith unto him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head.

• Jesus just told Peter that he has no part with Him if He doesn’t allow Jesus to wash Him.
• I hear so many preachers just annihilate the purpose of this Scripture.
• They get some of it right, but they miss the most important point of this Scripture.
• I hope you can see that the purpose of this Scripture is to show you how to be saved.
• Jesus Christ is the only one who can wash you clean. He’s the only one that can save you.

You’re not going to do it. Your works aren’t going to do it. Your church won’t cleanse you.

• Your baptism won’t cleanse you. Your repenting of sin won’t cleanse you.
• Your speaking in babble won’t cleanse you. But Jesus will cleanse you of your sins if you ask Him.
• He wants you to ask Him. He wants to come to you just like He did to Peter and wash your sins away.
• We need to be like Peter right here. “Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head.”
• Other preachers miss the entire point of this. They say, “We must be servants like Jesus Christ.”
• “We must wash everyone’s feet.” True, and they setup feet washing to show how to be a servant.

Only Jesus can wash your dirty feet. Only Jesus can wash your dirty sins. Do you see that now?

• This is the spiritual side of John Chapter 13. There’s a fleshly side to that too.
• It’s good to be a servant of God. And we’ll learn that here in this chapter.

[17] John 13:10-11 Jesus saith to him, He that is washed needeth not save to wash his feet, but is clean every whit: and ye are clean, but not all. 11 For he knew who should betray him; therefore said he, Ye are not all clean.

• All the disciples are there listening. If you’re washed, then you’re fully clean. You’re whole. You’re clean.
• Jesus is talking spiritually here. Your soul is cleansed from all sin once you’re washed in the blood of Jesus.
• “What can wash away my sin? Nothing but the blood of Jesus!!!” NOTHING BUT JESUS.
• And then Jesus tells them that they are clean but not all of them. There’s one there who isn’t clean.

Judas Iscariot Was Not A Saved Man

So, what does that tell you? All of the other 11 disciples were saved but Judas Iscariot was not saved.

• There’s the proof of that right there. And you might say, “Well, Peter denied Jesus 3 times.”
• Well, guess what? The soul of Peter was already saved. His flesh wasn’t because his flesh died.
• But Peter is in heaven not because he repented of that sin and felt bad about his denial.
• He’s in heaven because he was saved long before he denied Jesus and repented of his sin.
• The truth is that Peter would have went to heaven no matter what he did after he was saved.
• And that’s why Jesus said, “AND YE ARE CLEAN. You’re clean every whit or altogether clean.”
• He’s talking to you if you’ve believed on Him. That means your soul is clean from all sin.
• We should be so thankful for that right now. He’s serves us every day and we should serve Him.

[18] John 13:12-13 So after he had washed their feet, and had taken his garments, and was set down again, he said unto them, Know ye what I have done to you? 13 Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am.

• He asks them if they understand what He’s done to them.
• He says, “You call me Master and Lord and I am. You say well. For so I am your Master and Lord.”

I want you to notice something, though. In verse 12, the Bible says “AND HAD TAKEN HIS GARMENTS.”

• In verse 4, we see that Jesus laid aside His garments.
• He didn’t take off all His clothes. They had under garments, clothing, and outer garments.
• A robe or coat is an outer garment. He took off his outer garments. Not all of His garments.
• Jesus didn’t wear a dress like so many people will say. He had outer garments that He removed.
• For example, if I were going to wash your feet, I would most likely take off my coat jacket.
• Jesus continues speaking to the disciples there in verse 14 of John Chapter 13.

[19] John 13:14-15 If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another’s feet. 15 For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you.

• Jesus didn’t come to rule and reign over us and tell us every little thing we better be doing.
• He just said in verse 13: “For so I am your Master and Lord.”
• And then He showed them what the best Master and Lord does for His people.
• He serves them. He came to earth for us. He served us, and He is the great God Almighty.

That’s what a good manager at work will do for you. A good boss will stand up for his or her people.

• A good Dad will serve his family and do what is needed. A good Mom will serve her family.
• And when that happens, the employees, the children, the wife, the husband RESPECT that person greatly.
• Those people will work together and do anything for that Lord and Master.
• When a good manager, a good Dad, or a good Mom needs something, the people will stand up for them.
• That doesn’t mean give people everything they want. That means doing what’s best for them.
• There’s a huge difference. Jesus never gives us everything we want in our flesh.

For example, I’m here right now to serve you and to teach the word of God as a servant.

• These sermons take a lot of time and effort. They don’t just pop up out of thin air. I work for you and God.
• When Jesus washed their feet, He was giving them an example of what a Master and Lord should be.
• We need to serve each other. Again, that’s doing what’s best for each other.
• For example, I’m not giving someone money so they can go buy drugs or alcohol.
• That’s what they want, but that’s not what they need. We do everything to give glory to God.
• We don’t glorify God by helping someone sin over and over again. God hates sin.

[20] John 13:16-17 Verily, verily, I say unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord; neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him. 17 If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them.

• The servant is not greater than His Lord. Jesus is not greater than His Father in heaven.
• He serves His Father. That’s what He’s saying right here. Jesus is our Lord. “THE LORD JESUS CHRIST.”
• We aren’t greater than Jesus Christ. If we’re not greater than Jesus Christ, what do you think that means?
• Again, we compare Scripture to Scripture. Moving 2 chapters ahead in the Book of John.

[21] John 15:20 Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept my saying, they will keep yours also.

• That’s Jesus warning us that we will be persecuted if we serve our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
• If we do what He asks us to do, we will be persecuted. It’s that simple. So be ready for persecution.
• You should be able to take it because God is on your side. You don’t need the world on your side.

You’ll Be Happy If You Do What God Says

[22] John 13:17 If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them.

• If you understand that you will be persecuted for serving Jesus Christ, you’ll be happy if you do them.

[23] John 15:14 Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.

• Was Noah a friend of God?

[24] Genesis 6:22 Thus did Noah; according to all that God commanded him, so did he.

• Do you think Noah was persecuted? I guarantee you that everyone laughed at Noah.
• They probably thought he was crazy and that he lost it. But he did everything God commanded him.
• What about Moses?

[25] Exodus 40:16 Thus did Moses: according to all that the LORD commanded him, so did he.

• Moses was persecuted by his own people. His own family didn’t like him at points.
• But God took care of that. Be happy that God is on your side. You don’t need anyone else on your side.
• Let’s continue in verse 18 of John Chapter 13.

[26] John 13:18 I speak not of you all: I know whom I have chosen: but that the scripture may be fulfilled, He that eateth bread with me hath lifted up his heel against me.

• Jesus says, “I know whom I have chosen.” He chose all 12 disciples including Judas Iscariot.
• Judas Iscariot is going to lift up his heel against Jesus Christ. He eats bread with Jesus but betrays Him.
• Notice that Jesus says: “But that the SCRIPTURE may be fulfilled.”
• The Scriptures told us that someone close to Jesus would betray Him.
• What Scripture is Jesus talking about here? Let’s take a look at Psalm Chapter 41.

[27] Psalm 41:9 Yea, mine own familiar friend, in whom I trusted, which did eat of my bread, hath lifted up his heel against me.

• Psalm 41:9 was fulfilled when Judas Iscariot was chosen by Jesus Christ to be one of the 12 disciples.

[28] John 6:70-71 Jesus answered them, Have not I chosen you twelve, and one of you is a devil? 71 He spake of Judas Iscariot the son of Simon: for he it was that should betray him, being one of the twelve.

[29] Matthew 26:23 And he answered and said, He that dippeth his hand with me in the dish, the same shall betray me.

[30] Mark 14:18-20 And as they sat and did eat, Jesus said, Verily I say unto you, One of you which eateth with me shall betray me. 19 And they began to be sorrowful, and to say unto him one by one, Is it I? and another said, Is it I? 20 And he answered and said unto them, It is one of the twelve, that dippeth with me in the dish.

• Why did Jesus choose Judas Iscariot if He knew He was going to betray Him?
• “But that the Scripture may be fulfilled.” The word of God will always come true.
• And God has a reason for everything. Judas is a picture of false preachers and false prophets.
• The other disciples had no idea Judas was the false preacher in the group.

[31] Jude 4 For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ.

• You can’t see someone’s faith. You can’t see if they’re saved. So you need to be careful.
• Once someone starts getting away from the Scriptures, you need to watch out.
• You might say, “Well, it’s not that bad. He does use some Scripture.” That won’t work.
• Don’t follow a Judas Iscariot. That’s one reason Jesus chose Judas Iscariot as one of the twelve.
• He’s an example that we need to know and understand. Very important.

When It Comes To Pass, You Will Believe

[32] John 13:19 Now I tell you before it come, that, when it is come to pass, ye may believe that I am he.

• Jesus is telling the disciples again what the future holds. When Judas betray Jesus, know that Jesus is God.
• “Ye may believe that I am he.”

[33] Isaiah 43:10-11 Ye are my witnesses, saith the LORD, and my servant whom I have chosen: that ye may know and believe me, and understand that I am he: before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me. 11 I, even I, am the LORD; and beside me there is no saviour.

• Jesus is that Savior. He’s telling them the future, and He’s saying: “I am the Lord. I am the Savior.”
• There is no one else to save you. You better trust in Jesus Christ alone to save you.

[34] John 13:20 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that receiveth whomsoever I send receiveth me; and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me.

• Jesus has sent us out to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
• If someone receives you, that person receives the Lord Jesus Christ. And not only Jesus but His Father.
• Jesus says, “They will also receive HIM that sent ME.” Jesus was sent by someone. Who could that be?
• There’s more than 1 person in the ONE TRUE GOD. There are 3 persons in 1 God.
• God the Father sent Jesus Christ. Receive Jesus, and you’ll receive God the Father.

[35] John 13:21-22 When Jesus had thus said, he was troubled in spirit, and testified, and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me. 22 Then the disciples looked one on another, doubting of whom he spake.

• So we already know who betrayed Jesus, but think about all of the disciples. They didn’t know who it was.
• Jesus looks at them and says, “ONE OF YOU SHALL BETRAY ME.” That would be uncomfortable, right?
• He was troubled in the spirit when He said this.

[36] John 13:23-24 Now there was leaning on Jesus’ bosom one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved. 24 Simon Peter therefore beckoned to him, that he should ask who it should be of whom he spake.

• One of the disciples was leaning on Jesus’ bosom or His chest.
• If you’ve had a good friend before, you hug them. You pull them into your body and your chest.
• For example, I’ll put my arm around my Dad and hug him.
• Who was this disciple? Was it Peter, Andrew, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew, Thomas, Matthew?
• Or was it the other James Son of Alphaeus, Lebbaeus, or Simon the Canaanite?
• The Book of John tells us in John Chapter 21, the last chapter of John, who this disciple is that Jesus loved.

[37] John 21:20 Then Peter, turning about, seeth the disciple whom Jesus loved following; which also leaned on his breast at supper, and said, Lord, which is he that betrayeth thee?

[38] John 21:24 This is the disciple which testifieth of these things, and wrote these things: and we know that his testimony is true.

• We know that the disciple Jesus loved is the Apostle John who wrote the Book of John.
• He also wrote the Book of Revelation. Peter asks John to ask Jesus which one is the traitor.

[39] John 13:25-26 He then lying on Jesus’ breast saith unto him, Lord, who is it? 26 Jesus answered, He it is, to whom I shall give a sop, when I have dipped it. And when he had dipped the sop, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon.

• John asks Jesus just as Peter wanted him to and Jesus gives them the answer.
• He tells them that whoever he gives the sop to is the one who will betray Him.
• Jesus dips the bread into a dish and hands the sop to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon.
• That should have been enough to let the disciples knew, but they still didn’t see it.

[40] John 13:27-28 And after the sop Satan entered into him. Then said Jesus unto him, That thou doest, do quickly. 28 Now no man at the table knew for what intent he spake this unto him.

• So we know the traitor is Judas Iscariot because Jesus handed the sop to Judas Iscariot.
• Jesus speaks to Judas with Satan inside of Judas and says, “THAT THOU DOEST, DO QUICKLY.”
• And guess what’s going to happen? HE WILL DO IT QUICKLY because even Satan bows down to God.
• Verse 30 of this chapter tells us that Judas went out immediately that night.
• Did you know that evil people like to get straight to the evil very quickly? Judas Iscariot was evil.

Evil People Get Straight To The Evil

[41] Proverbs 1:10-12 My son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not. 11 If they say, Come with us, let us lay wait for blood, let us lurk privily for the innocent without cause: 12 Let us swallow them up alive as the grave; and whole, as those that go down into the pit:

[42] Proverbs 1:13-15 We shall find all precious substance, we shall fill our houses with spoil: 14 Cast in thy lot among us; let us all have one purse: 15 My son, walk not thou in the way with them; refrain thy foot from their path:

• Do you remember how Judas Iscariot held the money purse for all the disciples.
• Verse 14 of Proverbs Chapter 1 says, “Let us all have one purse.”

[43] Proverbs 1:16-19 For their feet run to evil, and make haste to shed blood. 17 Surely in vain the net is spread in the sight of any bird. 18 And they lay wait for their own blood; they lurk privily for their own lives. 19 So are the ways of every one that is greedy of gain; which taketh away the life of the owners thereof.

• Their feet run to evil and make haste to shed blood. Judas Iscariot is an example of that right there.
• He loved evil. He ran to get it done. He made haste to shed blood. Do you see that?
• “So are the ways of every one that is greedy of gain.”
• “Which taketh away the life of the owners thereof.” Don’t be greedy of gain.
• Most people in this world won’t do anything unless they are GAINING something for themselves from it.
• That’s Judas Iscariot, and you don’t want to be like him.

Also notice that Satan was able to enter into Judas Iscariot.

• In verse 2 of John Chapter 13 we saw that the devil had already put this betrayal into the heart of Judas.
• If you’re saved and the Holy Spirit dwells within you as He does in all saved people, Satan can’t enter.
• Satan or any of his fallen angel demons can’t contend with the Almighty Holy Spirit.

[44] Isaiah 49:25 But thus saith the LORD, Even the captives of the mighty shall be taken away, and the prey of the terrible shall be delivered: for I will contend with him that contendeth with thee, and I will save thy children.

• God has you once you’re saved and no one can do anything about that including Satan himself.
• He is ZERO MATCH for the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.
• God says, “I WILL CONTEND or fight with him that CONTENDETH with THEE!!!”
• With Judas Iscariot, we know that he wasn’t a saved man. He never had faith in Jesus. Not once.
• Watch what the Book of Luke tells us happened after Judas went out that night from Jesus.

[45] Luke 22:3-5 Then entered Satan into Judas surnamed Iscariot, being of the number of the twelve. 4 And he went his way, and communed with the chief priests and captains, how he might betray him unto them. 5 And they were glad, and covenanted to give him money.

• They offered Judas Iscariot MONEY to betray the Son of God.
• He betrayed the only one who could save him over money. He wanted to gain from betraying Jesus.

[46] John 13:29-30 For some of them thought, because Judas had the bag, that Jesus had said unto him, Buy those things that we have need of against the feast; or, that he should give something to the poor. 30 He then having received the sop went immediately out: and it was night.

• The disciples were confused. They didn’t listen to the words of Jesus.
• They thought since Judas was always carrying that money bag that Jesus was instructing him.
• They though Jesus told Judas to fo buy the things they needed for the feast and give some to the poor.
• We have to make sure we aren’t getting distracted by other things like that.
• We need to make sure we’re hearing God’s words and not being distracted by other things.
• Too many churches are distracted with other things, and they never hear the words of Jesus Christ.

[47] Romans 3:28 Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law.

• A man is justified by faith alone. No good works are required to justified in front of God.
• It’s simply faith on the Lord Jesus Christ or believing on Him alone to save you. That’s it.
• But how many churches around here actually teach that? They’ll even say they do, but they don’t.
• So be careful out there with the false churches and false preachers like Judas Iscariot.
• Most of them are not hungry to preach the word of God, but they’re happy when you fill that money bag.
• Judas loved to full up that money bag. And he liked to do it quickly so he could gain more money.
• I’ll guarantee that money Judas gained isn’t doing him any good at all right now as he burns in hell fire.

[48] John 13:31-32 Therefore, when he was gone out, Jesus said, Now is the Son of man glorified, and God is glorified in him. 32 If God be glorified in him, God shall also glorify him in himself, and shall straightway glorify him.

• Now Jesus is telling them what’s going to happen. Judas Iscariot is gone.
• “NOW IS THE SON OF MAN GLORIFIED AND GOD IS GLORIFIED IN HIM.”
• Judas is going out quickly to betray Jesus and that’s going to lead to Jesus being glorified.
• And when Jesus is glorified, God is glorified in Jesus Christ.
• In John Chapter 17, Jesus prays to His Father as the moment is coming for Jesus to be crucified.

Father The Hour Is Come To Glorify Thy Son

[49] John 17:1-2 These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee: 2 As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him.

[50] John 17:3-5 And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent. 4 I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do. 5 And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was.

• Jesus will be glorified which will glorify His Father in heaven. That’s why Jesus does this.
• Why do you think Jesus would want to do everything He can to glorify His Father?
• Do you remember earlier when we talked about a good manager, a good Dad, a good Mom?
• God the Father ALWAYS puts everyone else first above Him including Jesus Christ, His one and only Son.
• Jesus does everything His Father asks because He loves His great and almighty Father who is God.

[51] John 13:33 Little children, yet a little while I am with you. Ye shall seek me: and as I said unto the Jews, Whither I go, ye cannot come; so now I say to you.

• Jesus preaches to His disciples right here. He tells them they can’t come where He’s going.
• He’s only going to be here a little while more, and then He’s going to be gone.
• He told the Jews they can’t come where He’s going, and the Jews thought somewhere on earth.

[52] John 7:33-35 Then said Jesus unto them, Yet a little while am I with you, and then I go unto him that sent me. 34 Ye shall seek me, and shall not find me: and where I am, thither ye cannot come. 35 Then said the Jews among themselves, Whither will he go, that we shall not find him? will he go unto the dispersed among the Gentiles, and teach the Gentiles?

• We don’t think enough about heavenly things. We focus on earthly things.

[53] John 8:21-23 Then said Jesus again unto them, I go my way, and ye shall seek me, and shall die in your sins: whither I go, ye cannot come. 22 Then said the Jews, Will he kill himself? because he saith, Whither I go, ye cannot come. 23 And he said unto them, Ye are from beneath; I am from above: ye are of this world; I am not of this world.

• Jesus plainly tells them that He’s going to be with His Father that sent Him.
• Now, in John Chapter 13, He’s telling His disciples the same thing. But were they listening? Let’s see.

[54] John 13:34-35 A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. 35 By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.

• We are to love one another. How do we do that? By giving each other everything we want, right?
• We give each other money, cars, houses, jewelry, guns, food, clothing, gift certificates.
• That’s how we love one another, right? Is that how people will know you are disciples of Jesus?
• How will people know you’re a follower of Jesus? Putting a fish sign on your car?
• Putting a cross all over your home? Putting a cross on the front of your church? How will people know?

[55] Romans 13:8-10 Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law. 9 For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. 10 Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.

• You love others by keeping God’s commandments. When you do that, you never do wrong to someone.
• Love is hating the evil and cleaving to the good.

[56] Romans 12:9 Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good.

• If you hate evil, you aren’t doing wrong to anyone. The evil person might think so, but you aren’t.

[57] 2 John 6 And this is love, that we walk after his commandments. This is the commandment, That, as ye have heard from the beginning, ye should walk in it.

• If we follow the commandments of God, then we are a follower of Jesus Christ.
• “By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples IF ye have love one to another.”

[58] John 13:36 Simon Peter said unto him, Lord, whither goest thou? Jesus answered him, Whither I go, thou canst not follow me now; but thou shalt follow me afterwards.

• Peter says, “Where are you going?” He hadn’t been listening very well. He should know.
• Do you remember when we learned about THOU and how it is singular? Notice what Jesus says to Peter.
• “Whither I go, THOU canst not follow me NOW; but THOU shalt follow me afterwards.”

Peter Will Follow Him In The Future

He’s telling Peter alone that He will follow Him in the future but not right now.

• Jesus has to go die first. He’ll be back. In other words, Peter will be going to heaven.
• Peter is already saved, and this proves that. He’s going to deny Jesus Christ, which is a great sin.
• But the soul of Peter is already forgiven of those sins because he’s already had faith in Jesus Christ.
• Jesus previously told the Jews that they would die in their sins. Peter won’t because he’s forgiven.
• Peter wasn’t some perfect man who never sinned. He was a great sinner just like you and I.
• But he believed on the Lord Jesus Christ and was already saved at this point.
• “Thou shalt follow me afterwards.” Jesus has to go do this work on His own, and it’s not for Peter.

[59] John 13:37 Peter said unto him, Lord, why cannot I follow thee now? I will lay down my life for thy sake.

• Sometimes our mouth gets ahead of our actions. Sometimes we can’t keep what we say.
• So we need to watch what we say. We let our emotions get the best of us and Peter did right there.

[60] Proverbs 16:18 Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.

[61] 1 Corinthians 10:12 Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.

• We aren’t as great as we think we are. That’s we need to know who is great and that is Jesus.
• Peter says, “I want to follow you now, Jesus. I WILL LAY DOWN MY LIFE FOR THY SAKE.”
• It wasn’t time for Peter to lay down his life for Jesus. It wasn’t his time.
• It was the time for Jesus to lay down His life for Peter.

[62] John 13:38 Jesus answered him, Wilt thou lay down thy life for my sake? Verily, verily, I say unto thee, The cock shall not crow, till thou hast denied me thrice.

• Jesus answers Peter: “Will you REALLY lay down your life for me?”
• He says, “No you won’t. You’ll do the opposite. You’ll deny me three times.”
• “Verily, verily, I say unto thee, The cock shall not crow, till thou hast denied me thrice.”
• In John Chapter 18, we see Peter deny Jesus 3 times just as Jesus said.

[63] John 18:17 Then saith the damsel that kept the door unto Peter, Art not thou also one of this man’s disciples? He saith, I am not.

[64] John 18:25 And Simon Peter stood and warmed himself. They said therefore unto him, Art not thou also one of his disciples? He denied it, and said, I am not.

[65] John 18:27 Peter then denied again: and immediately the cock crew.

• But you can know Peter is in heaven right now not because he repented of his sin, but because he had faith in Jesus to save him.
• Peter wrote this in the book of 1 Peter:

[66] 1 Peter 2:6 Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded.

• Let me say this again: “HE THAT BELIEVETH ON HIM SHALL NOT BE CONFOUNDED.”
• If you put 100% of your trust on Jesus Christ right now, you will not be confounded or ashamed.
• You’ll be in heaven because He’ll save you from death and hell right now at this moment.
