Question: “Why Do Baptists Baptize by Immersion?”
🎬 Intro Script:
Welcome to Baptist Bold: Ask a Pastor—where truth isn’t filtered, and the Bible has the final word. I’m Pastor Joshua Tapp from True Words Baptist Church in Louisville, Kentucky. Let’s get into today’s question…
📖 Answer:
A lot of churches sprinkle. Some pour. Baptists immerse. So why does it matter?
Because only immersion lines up with the Bible. Here’s why Baptists do it right:
1. “Baptize” Means to Immerse
The Greek word baptizo doesn’t mean sprinkle or pour. It literally means to dip, submerge, or immerse.
If God wanted us to sprinkle, He would’ve used a different word. But He didn’t.
📖 John 3:23 — “…because there was much water there…”
You don’t need “much water” to sprinkle. You need it to baptize the biblical way.
2. Immersion Pictures the Gospel
📖 Romans 6:4 — “We are buried with him by baptism into death…”
- Going under = death and burial
- Rising out = resurrection
That’s why immersion is the only method that pictures the Gospel: death, burial, and resurrection.
3. Every Baptism in the Bible Was by Immersion
📖 Acts 8:38–39 — “…they went down both into the water… and when they were come up out of the water…”
That’s immersion. You’ll never find a baby sprinkled in the Bible. Not once.
4. Baptism Follows Salvation—Always
Baptists don’t baptize babies because babies can’t believe. Every baptism in the Bible followed belief.
📖 Acts 2:41 — “Then they that gladly received his word were baptized…”
📖 Acts 8:36–37 — “…If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest.”
If you’re not saved, baptism means nothing.
5. Baptism Doesn’t Save—It Obeys
We’re not Church of Christ. Baptism doesn’t wash away sin.
📖 1 Peter 3:21 — “…not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God…”
It’s not what gets you to heaven. It’s your first step of obedience after believing the Gospel.
🎯 Bottom Line:
Baptists baptize by immersion because:
- That’s what baptize means
- It pictures the Gospel
- Every example in Scripture used it
- It only comes after salvation
- It obeys God—without adding to salvation
Sprinkling is tradition. Immersion is truth.
