What Is Walking in the Spirit?

🎥 Baptist Bold: Ask a Pastor

📅 Episode 19 – Thursday: Doctrine Day
Question: “What Is Walking in the Spirit?”

🎬 Intro Script:

Welcome to Baptist Bold: Ask a Pastor—where truth isn’t filtered, and the Bible has the final word. I’m Pastor Joshua Tapp from True Words Baptist Church in Louisville, Kentucky. Let’s get into today’s question…

📖 Answer:

Walking in the Spirit is one of the most misunderstood parts of the Christian life.

It doesn’t mean mystical experiences.
It doesn’t mean living a sinless life.
It doesn’t mean feeling spiritual goosebumps.

It means daily choosing to walk by faith—yielded to God’s Word and Spirit—not by your flesh.

Let’s break it down from Scripture:

1. Walking in the Spirit Means Saying No to the Flesh

📖 Galatians 5:16“This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.”

Walking in the Spirit isn’t automatic after salvation. It’s a conscious choice:

  • Flesh says, “Get angry”—Spirit says, “Forgive.”
  • Flesh says, “Be lazy”—Spirit says, “Be faithful.”
  • Flesh says, “Gratify yourself”—Spirit says, “Glorify God.”

It’s a battle.
It’s a walk.
It’s a daily decision.

2. Walking in the Spirit Means Following God’s Word

📖 Psalm 119:105“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”

The Spirit of God never leads you outside the Word of God.
If you’re being “led” into rebellion, worldliness, or compromise—that’s not the Spirit. That’s your flesh.

True Spirit-led living is Word-saturated living.

3. Walking in the Spirit Produces the Fruit of the Spirit

📖 Galatians 5:22–23“…love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance…”

Fruit comes naturally when you’re walking right.

You don’t force joy, peace, love, and patience—it flows when you’re yielded to the Spirit.

4. Walking in the Spirit Means Walking by Faith—Not by Feelings

📖 2 Corinthians 5:7“For we walk by faith, not by sight.”

Walking in the Spirit isn’t about feeling spiritual all the time.
It’s about trusting God, obeying His Word, and keeping your heart clean—even when you feel dry, discouraged, or distracted.

5. Walking in the Spirit Requires Death to Self

📖 Galatians 2:20“I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me…”

You can’t walk in the Spirit and live for yourself at the same time.
It’s surrender.
It’s service.
It’s Christ living through you.

🎯 Bottom Line:

  • Walking in the Spirit is walking in the Word, by faith, with a yielded heart.
  • It’s not about perfection—it’s about direction.
  • It’s not about a feeling—it’s about a focus.

📖 Galatians 5:25“If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.”

If you’re saved—you’re alive in the Spirit.
Now it’s time to walk like it.
