What Is the Key of David in Revelation?

The phrase “key of David” appears in Revelation 3:7 and carries deep theological and prophetic significance. To understand it properly, we need to explore both its biblical origins and its symbolic meaning as revealed in Scripture.

Where Is the Key of David Mentioned?

“And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write; These things saith he that is holy, he that is true, he that hath the key of David, he that openeth, and no man shutteth; and shutteth, and no man openeth.”
– Revelation 3:7 (KJV)

This powerful statement is part of Christ’s message to the church in Philadelphia. He identifies Himself as the one who holds the key of David, a reference that points us back to the Old Testament.

Old Testament Origin: Isaiah 22:22

The “key of David” first appears in the Book of Isaiah:

“And the key of the house of David will I lay upon his shoulder; so he shall open, and none shall shut; and he shall shut, and none shall open.”
– Isaiah 22:22 (KJV)

This verse refers to Eliakim, a faithful servant appointed over the royal house during King Hezekiah’s reign. The key symbolizes authority, stewardship, and access—he was given control over the king’s household and its resources.

Symbolism of the Key of David

In both Isaiah and Revelation, the key of David symbolizes the authority to open and shut—granting or denying access. But in Revelation 3:7, that authority is clearly and exclusively held by Jesus Christ.

1. Messianic Authority

Jesus, as the Son of David (Matthew 1:1), holds rightful dominion over the kingdom of God. The key of David represents His sovereign right to grant access to the kingdom, including salvation, eternal life, and open doors of opportunity for His servants.

2. Control Over Doors—Spiritual and Literal

When Christ opens a door (whether for ministry, blessing, or eternal life), no man can shut it. Likewise, if He shuts a door (judgment, opportunity, or rebuke), no man can open it. His authority is absolute.

Why Is This Important to the Church?

To the faithful church at Philadelphia, Christ’s reminder that He holds the key of David is a promise of divine access, protection, and opportunity. This faithful church had “a little strength” but had not denied His name. Christ assures them that He—not man—controls their destiny.

The Key of David and Salvation

Jesus alone has the authority to open the door to salvation:

“I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved…”
– John 10:9 (KJV)

Those who trust in Him have access to the Father (John 14:6). There is no religious system, priest, or self-righteous deed that can unlock heaven—only Jesus, who holds the key of David.

False Interpretations to Avoid

Some cults and groups (such as the Seventh-day Adventists or Armstrongism) have twisted the meaning of the key of David to claim exclusive authority or secret knowledge. These interpretations are unbiblical.

The Bible is clear: the key of David is held by Jesus Christ alone, and He uses it for the good of His people.

Final Thoughts: Christ Holds the Key

The key of David in Revelation is a symbol of Christ’s kingly authority, His role as the true Messiah, and His power to open the doors of eternity. When He opens, no man can shut. When He shuts, no man can open.

If you’re unsure whether the door of salvation has been opened to you, remember the promise:

“Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved…”
– Acts 16:31 (KJV)
