[2] The title of the sermon today is “THE LORD’S SUPPER PART 2.”

Let’s Assign The Days And Times For Events Of The Crucifixion

• We’re going to continue studying the Lord’s Supper.
• We completed the Lord’s Supper Part 1 sermon this past Sunday night.
• Now, let’s continue with the part 2 sermon.

Hopefully, you have the timeline I gave you from the last sermon with you.

• We started assigning times to the timeline.
• With what we learned in the Lord’s Supper Part 1, we can assign all the days and times to when Jesus was crucified and when He arose.
• And keep in mind, some people say Jesus died on that Wednesday and some people say Thursday.
• It could be either one of those depending on how you interpret the verses that I read next.
• Now, we can assign all the days and times to when Jesus was crucified and when He arose.

[74] Matthew 12:40 For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale’s belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

[75] Matthew 16:21 From that time forth began Jesus to shew unto his disciples, how that he must go unto Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day.

• So, one verse says 3 days and 3 nights and the other says raised the THIRD DAY.
• The chart should now help you to see what that means.
• Count the number of days and number of nights since His death. There are 3 days, 3 nights.
• Jesus is risen on the THIRD FULL DAY since His death. Do you see how that makes sense now?

Now, let me show you that this is how days in the Bible work.

• Each day starts at even or about 6 PM. Night time. Then the day occurs.
• Then 6 PM comes and next day starts. We’ll use the Day of Atonement as an example.

[76] Leviticus 23:27 Also on the tenth day of this seventh month there shall be a day of atonement: it shall be an holy convocation unto you; and ye shall afflict your souls, and offer an offering made by fire unto the LORD.

• Notice it says on the 10^th day of the seventh month.

[77] Leviticus 23:32 It shall be unto you a sabbath of rest, and ye shall afflict your souls: in the ninth day of the month at even, from even unto even, shall ye celebrate your sabbath.

• See where it says ninth day of the month at even, from even unto even?
• That’s the tenth day of the month. Starts at even on the 9^th day and goes from even to even.

The next passage of Scripture that gives us this timeline of the Lord’s Supper and Passover is Mark Chapter 14.

• This Scripture gives the exact timing as expected. We see something new in the Book of Mark.

[78] Mark 15:25 And it was the third hour, and they crucified him.

• This means they put Jesus on the cross at about 9:00 AM, or the third hour from 6:00 AM.
• Jesus wasn’t yet dead at this time. We learn that he was on the cross for 6 hours before He died.
• So, Jesus was put on the cross about 9:00 AM. Darkness from 12 PM to 3 PM. Jesus dies at 3 PM.
• This all happens on the PASSOVER DAY. The Book of Mark matches Matthew perfectly.
• Next, we look to Luke Chapter 22. Remember, we’re learning about the Lord’s Supper.

[79] Luke 22:14-16 And when the hour was come, he sat down, and the twelve apostles with him. 15 And he said unto them, With desire I have desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer: 16 For I say unto you, I will not any more eat thereof, until it be fulfilled in the kingdom of God.

• This is the last PASSOVER meal for Jesus Christ. And He’s been looking forward to this meal He says.

[80] Luke 22:17-20 And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and said, Take this, and divide it among yourselves: 18 For I say unto you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine, until the kingdom of God shall come. 19 And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me. 20 Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you.

• Next, I went to the Book of John to see if there’s any additional information on the Lord’s Supper.
• And I also looked for any information on timing. The Book of John skips over the Lord’s Supper.

[81] John 13:1-2 Now before the feast of the passover, when Jesus knew that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end. 2 And supper being ended, the devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray him;

• So verse 2 there says the SUPPER had ended. We don’t hear about the Lord’s Supper here in John.
• And I want you to see something else that’s different in the Book of John.

Jesus Was Taken Down From The Cross Before The 6 PM Sabbath Deadline

[82] John 19:31 The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.

• So, we know Jesus was taken down from the cross before the 6 PM Sabbath deadline.
• Remember, at 6 PM, the FEAST OF UNLEAVENED BREAD begins. It’s a SABBATH day automatically.
• They said, “We need to get those 3 men down before the Sabbath Day begins.”

[83] John 19:32-33 Then came the soldiers, and brake the legs of the first, and of the other which was crucified with him. 33 But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs:

• We then see that Jesus died within 6 hours, which is considered to be quickly.
• The other 2 who were crucified weren’t dead yet. And there was a reason for that.

[84] John 19:36 For these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken.

• Then it appears that they got Jesus buried in the tomb rather quickly based on this in John.

[85] John 19:42 There laid they Jesus therefore because of the Jews’ preparation day; for the sepulchre was nigh at hand.

• So, it appears that Jesus may have been buried right before the Sabbath Day begins at 6 PM.
• The SEPULCHRE OR TOMB was very near so it didn’t take them long to get the body of Jesus there.
• I believe Jesus died at 3 PM and He was buried by 6 PM.
• And I’m going over all of this just so you see the timing of the Lord’s Supper.
• It was taken on the Passover before Jesus died. It happened while they were eating the PASSOVER.

Jesus NOW represents the PASSOVER LAMB.

• Jesus was crucified on the PASSOVER day, the 14^th of the first month.
• He was buried in the tomb by the start of the Sabbath Day, which was a HIGH SABBATH.
• Why? Because it was the first day of the feast of unleavened bread.
• The day after the feast of unleavened bread was a normal Sabbath day.
• So, the picture there is Jesus is working while we’re resting. He did all the work.
• Then Jesus arises on the first day of the week, which is a Sunday.
• And it happened during the very early morning hours. He arose on the THIRD DAY.
• When Jesus died, His soul went to hell. So that happened on the 14^th during the day at 3 PM.
• The soul of Jesus was in the heart of the earth, which is hell, for 3 days and 3 nights.

Now, let’s look at 1 Corinthians Chapter 11 to find out more about the Lord’s Supper.

• I want you to see what this Chapter says because it’s very important to notice what’s happening.

[86] 1 Corinthians 11:17 Now in this that I declare unto you I praise you not, that ye come together not for the better, but for the worse.

• Paul is saying, “Hey, I’m not praising in you what I’m about to tell you.”
• “You’re supposed to be gathering together for church for the better of everyone.”
• “But you, Church of Corinth, are coming together FOR THE WORSE.” That’s not good.

[87] 1 Corinthians 11:18-19 For first of all, when ye come together in the church, I hear that there be divisions among you; and I partly believe it. 19 For there must be also heresies among you, that they which are approved may be made manifest among you.

• There should be no division in a Church. We ALL need to hear the word of God and believe what it says.
• Heresy is a belief that doesn’t match the Bible.
• For example, a HERESY is saying you MUST be baptized to be saved.
• Paul is saying there’s heresies in the Church and that causes division. It causes confusion in the Church.

[88] 1 Corinthians 11:20-21 When ye come together therefore into one place, this is not to eat the Lord’s supper. 21 For in eating every one taketh before other his own supper: and one is hungry, and another is drunken.

• So remember, when Jesus implemented the Lord’s Supper, it was on PASSOVER.
• It was Jesus and his disciples. It was a smaller group of people.
• But they were eating the Passover meal when Jesus implemented the Lord’s Supper.
• And Paul is saying that we don’t come together to eat the Lord’s Supper in that same way.
• The people at the Church were taking more before the other got any.
• One was drinking too much and getting drunken. They were corrupting the Lord’s Supper.
• Paul is saying that’s not what you come together for when you’re having the Lord’s Supper.
• In other words, don’t make a meal out of it, eat it all up, drink it all up before others.

[89] 1 Corinthians 11:22 What? have ye not houses to eat and to drink in? or despise ye the church of God, and shame them that have not? What shall I say to you? shall I praise you in this? I praise you not.

• Paul preaches it like it should be preached. God says what He needs to say.
• Paul says, “Hey, I don’t you praise you for that. It’s wrong.”

[90] 1 Corinthians 11:23-24 For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, That the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread: 24 And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me.

• You should be very familiar with this now. His broken body is represented by the broken bread.

[91] 1 Corinthians 11:25 After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me.

• The fruit of the vine, or the grape juice, represents His blood that was spilled to save us from our sin.

[92] 1 Corinthians 11:26 For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord’s death till he come.

• Notice HE SAID, “For as often” as you do this. He doesn’t give a timeframe.
• He doesn’t give a frequency. He says, “For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup.”
• So, we choose to do this once per month at supper time.
• If anyone argues someone is doing it too often or not enough, they have no argument.
• And notice what it says towards the end, “YE DO SHOW THE LORD’S DEATH TILL HE COME.”
• So, are we ever supposed to stop observing the Lord’s Supper? Not until He comes back.
• So, in this life right now, we are to NEVER stop observing the Lord’s Supper.

[93] 1 Corinthians 11:27 Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord.

• In other words, don’t dishonor the Lord Jesus Christ by disrespecting the Lord’s Supper.
• How do you disrespect the Lord’s Supper? By partaking when you are not worthy to partake.
• What makes you WORTHY to partake in the Lord’s Supper?
• First, you need to know and understand the TRUE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST in this Bible.
• Once you understand it, you need to accept it. And what does HIS GOSPEL say?
• His Gospel says that you MUST BELIEVE ON THE LORD JESUS CHRIST.
• Once you do, you’re saved. Your soul is free and clear from all sin.

Soul Is Not Equal To Spirit Is Not Equal To Body

So remember, we have a soul/spirit and then we have our flesh.

• Our flesh is NEVER worthy. We sin. We mess up. We need to ask forgiveness.
• We need to make sure we’re doing our best to WALK WITH GOD.
• We’re doing our best to obey God. If not, we shouldn’t partake of the Lord’s Supper.
• So, you need to be SAVED and doing your best to obey God.
• Why do I say this? We need to continue reading in 1 Corinthians Chapter 11 verse 28.

[94] 1 Corinthians 11:28 But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup.

• If you know you’re SAVED, you’re welcome to participate in the Lord’s Supper.
• BUT, let each man, male and female, examine themselves to ensure they are worthy.
• It’s my job to make sure you’re SAVED to the best of my ability. It’s your job to examine yourself.
• Why? I can’t see if you’re saved. But you should know if you’re saved and doing your best to obey God.
• This is very, very important to understand. Why? Let’s see. Next verse.

[95] 1 Corinthians 11:29 For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body.

• If you aren’t saved and partake in the Lord’s Supper, you eat and drink damnation to yourself.
• If you aren’t obeying God but partake of the Lord’s Supper, you eat and drink damnation to yourself.
• We’re all sinners. We can’t be sin free in our flesh. But we MUST be sin free in our soul.
• And just to make sure, WE NEED TO BE DOING OUR BEST TO OBEY GOD.
• It’s a time to examine ourselves. When you hear we’re doing the Lord’s Supper, examine yourself.

Are you saved? Are you doing your best to serve God? Are you doing your best to obey God?

• If you aren’t saved, DO NOT partake of the Lord’s Supper.
• If you haven’t been doing what God wants, it’s time to change that. It’s time to tell God you’re sorry.
• It’s time to get back to Him. We are to remember the sacrifice Jesus made.
• That should help you want to get back to obeying God.

[96] 1 Corinthians 11:30 For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep.

• Do you see what happens? You get sick. You get weak. You’re mocking the Lord’s Supper.
• And many even sleep, which means death because they partake UNWORTHILY.
• I don’t want that to happen to any of you. God is a serious God. We need to get this right.

[97] 1 Corinthians 11:31 For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged.

• We are to help each other. We are to judge each other if we need it. That can help me. That can help you.
• If I’m doing something not according to God’s word, HEY, YOU NEED TO TELL ME. I want to know.
• We need to get this stuff out in the open. We’re in Church. We’re safe here. We’re here to help each other.
• If you won’t judge yourself, I’ll do it for you. If I’m not judging myself, help me out.
• You don’t want me to get sick and die, do you? I hope not. That’s why we’re here. To help each other.

[98] 1 Corinthians 11:32 But when we are judged, we are chastened of the Lord, that we should not be condemned with the world.

• Examine yourself. Look at yourself. If you’re not doing right according to God, change it. Get it right.
• If not, God will judge you and punish you for it. He’s saying, “I’m giving you a chance to get this right.”
• If not, I’ll come do it for you. You don’t want that. God doesn’t want that for you either.

[99] 1 Corinthians 11:33 Wherefore, my brethren, when ye come together to eat, tarry one for another.

• This is saying we need to wait for each other. We need help each other.
• We don’t start eating the Lord’s Supper without others there. We don’t eat it all before they arrive.
• We help each other. This is very simple and easy to understand.
• The Church in Corinth wasn’t doing it like that. They were making a mockery out of the Lord’s Supper.

[100] 1 Corinthians 11:34 And if any man hunger, let him eat at home; that ye come not together unto condemnation. And the rest will I set in order when I come.

• If you’re hungry, don’t come to Church to eat the Lord’s Supper.
• And hungry people wouldn’t come for the Lord’s Supper because it’s not like that here.
• You aren’t getting much to eat or drink here. So, I believe we’re doing this the right way.

The Lord’s Supper is NOT a feast. It’s a time where WE, SAVED PEOPLE, come together as one.

• We examine ourselves. We make sure we’re helping each other. We make sure we’re obeying God.
• We make sure that we’re all saved and doing this together. We’re obeying God together.
• If not, we don’t need to partake of the Lord’s Supper.
• If we want to tell God that we aren’t obeying Him, we definitely don’t partake of the Lord’s Supper.
• And yes, this is a very serious time.

We don’t come to drink the amazing real grape juice or eat the homemade unleavened bread.

• I could eat a few baskets of that bread and drink a whole pitcher of that juice.
• That’s not why we’re partaking of the Lord’s Supper. If so, don’t partake.
• If you come to church to show that you’re good and you leave and do evil things, don’t partake.
• You need to examine yourself and make sure you’re worthy to partake in the Lord’s Supper.
• There should be no heresies in this Church, no division. We should all be on the same page.
• We do that by always staying together in this Church. We don’t split up.
• God knows we’re trying out best to do what He says. God knows. He sees.

The Lord’s Supper Occurred On The Passover

So remember, the Lord’s Supper happened on the Passover.

• We don’t celebrate the Old Testament Passover, but we do celebrate the Lord’s Supper.
• Jesus is the Passover Lamb. So during the Lord’s Supper, JESUS is the LAMB.
• We don’t eat an actual lamb because Jesus replaces the LAMB in the Passover meal.
• We have unleavened bread and juice. We don’t have meat. JESUS IS THE LAMB.
• I hope you see that connection now.

Now, think about if this church was HUGE with hundreds of people.

• And we come together to eat the Lord’s Supper. That could be a lot of bread and a lot of juice.
• Some people might get here early and try to eat a lot of the bread, drink a lot of the juice.
• That’s what was happening in the early Church there. We don’t want to be like that.

Judas Iscariot was there at the Lord’s Supper. The Book of Luke makes that very clear.

• Judas Iscariot was not a BELIEVER. He didn’t believe that Jesus was the SAVIOR.
• He believed Jesus was there in front of him, but HE WASN’T THE SAVIOR TO JUDAS.
• Judas took the Lord’s Supper. He ate it and drank it. What happened? Satan entered into Judas.
• The other disciples were examining themselves. They said, “Jesus, is it I that betrays you?”
• They were examining themselves. Judas partook unworthily. You don’t want to be like Judas.

The Lord’s Supper is ALSO called COMMUNION IN THE BIBLE.

• The word communion shows up 3 times in the New Testament. ZERO times in the Old Testament.
• Communion means to come together. So you can’t take the Lord’s Supper on your own.
• There has to be someone else there.

[101] 1 Corinthians 10:16-17 The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ? 17 For we being many are one bread, and one body: for we are all partakers of that one bread.

• We shouldn’t take the Lord’s Supper with UNBELIEVERS.
• We’re not helping them AT ALL when they are unbelievers.
• We’re helping them bring damnation to themselves.

[102] 2 Corinthians 6:14 Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?

• That’s why we need to be careful having the Lord’s Supper in CHURCH.
• The Bible NEVER says that it MUST be the entire CHURCH together in one place.
• It says the opposite of that. When Jesus implemented the Lord’s Supper, it was just HIM and the disciples.
• He was THEIR LEADER. He took the bread and brake the bread. He took the cup and passed it around.
• That’s why we believe the men, the leaders, should be giving out the Lord’s Supper.
• No where does the Bible say that it must be an elder, a deacon, a bishop.
• But remember, Jesus Christ was their leader. We need to know what we’re doing.
• God takes this very seriously.
• And here’s the final occurrence of the word communion in the Bible.

[103] 2 Corinthians 13:14 The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Ghost, be with you all. Amen. The second epistle to the Corinthians was written from Philippi, a city of Macedonia, by Titus and Lucas.

• We are communing together with GOD, JESUS, and the HOLY GHOST when we partake of the Lord’s Supper.
• It’s very important. Unbelievers do not partake.
• Many unbelievers think they are saved. Most don’t understand the Gospel at all.
• I didn’t. I needed to hear and read it over and over and over again.
• I thought I was worthy. I wasn’t. Now I know.
• So we need to help other people not to bring damnation upon themselves.
• We need to take the Lord’s Supper VERY seriously.

When a church becomes HUGE, I think there need to men who help train other men on how to partake in the Lord’s Supper.

• You don’t want it to turn into the Church at Corinth Lord’s Supper.
• God wasn’t happy with that. It needs to be done in order and we need to know people are saved.
• If we give out the Lord’s Supper to unsaved people, it’s not good on us either.
• If we grow, if we have visitors during these times, we need to be careful.
• So, that’s why I want to be very cautious when having the Lord’s Supper.
• I hope this sermon has helped you understand the Lord’s Supper.
