How True Words Baptist Church Began — A Work of Faith in Louisville, Kentucky
Every church has a beginning, but few begin the way True Words Baptist Church did — on the knees of men who simply prayed, “Lord, send us where the truth is needed most.”
In 2024, God answered that prayer. Things were a little rough at first due to persecution from a prior Baptist church, but faith in God brought us through those times.
A Calling Confirmed by Faith
For months, Joshua Tapp and Nathan Holmes prayed that God would open doors and close the wrong ones. They had no idea where He would send them — only that they were willing to go.
In the summer of 2024, that answer became clear: Louisville, Kentucky — a city filled with history, hardship, and hunger for the Gospel.
Through the guidance of Pastor Tim DeVries and the support of Vision Valley Baptist Church in Mt. Washington, the decision was made to plant a soul-winning Baptist church in the heart of Louisville’s West End.
The plan wasn’t built around programs or popularity, but around the pure preaching of the King James Bible and a commitment to fulfill the Great Commission.
From Prayer to Planting
Psalm 127:1
Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it.
In the months leading to launch day, prayer meetings turned into outreach campaigns, soul winning, and visitation. Families gathered to study, pray, sing, and knock doors across the city of Mount Washington and Louisville.
By the time True Words Baptist Church officially opened its doors on October 13, 2024, hundreds had already heard the Gospel.
Opening Sunday saw 77 people in attendance and multiple salvations — the first of many that would come within the doors of the church. From that moment, it was clear this church wasn’t born from ambition; it was born from obedience.
Built on the Word. Driven by the Mission.
From its first service, True Words Baptist Church has remained anchored to one truth — that God’s Word is final authority and His Gospel is for every creature.
Our mission flows from that conviction:
Preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ — Daily and from house to house, just as the early church did.
Acts 5:42
And daily in the temple, and in every house, they ceased not to teach and preach Jesus Christ.
Baptize Saved Believers — Encouraging every new believer to publicly identify with Christ.
Matthew 28:19
Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.
Teach All Things — Grounding disciples in sound doctrine, verse by verse through the King James Bible.
Matthew 28:20
Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you.
These principles haven’t changed — and never will. We will continue doing the work of God here at True Words Baptist Church.
The Men God Used
Pastor Joshua Tapp was born and raised in Kentucky and saved after hearing the true Gospel in his own home. With years of preaching experience, Bible study, and soul-winning training, he leads True Words Baptist Church with conviction, compassion, and courage.
Pastor Nathan Holmes was instrumental in planting the church and bringing Josh back home from the pagan Northwest. His steady faith, servant’s heart, and leadership in outreach and discipleship continue to strengthen the growing congregation.
Deacon Gary Tapp has been a steady pillar since the very beginning of True Words Baptist Church. A man of integrity, humility, and unwavering faith, he has dedicated his life to serving others and supporting the work of the Gospel. His leadership behind the scenes — in counsel, organization, and example — has strengthened both the ministry and the men around him. He embodies what it means to serve with a servant’s heart, always ready to help, encourage, and stand firm on the Word of God.
All three men share the same heartbeat — to win souls, train believers, and see Louisville transformed by the truth of God’s Word. With God the Father, the Holy Spirit, and the Lord Jesus Christ at the center of everything they do, True Words Baptist Church will thrive.
A Church That’s Growing — and Going
From that first Sunday, True Words Baptist Church has seen God’s hand in every area. Souls are being saved weekly, families are finding truth, and believers are being grounded in doctrine.
The church now averages dozens of salvations every month (sometimes 100+ per month), holds four weekly services, and maintains a citywide outreach program that continues to expand.
Matthew 9:37–38
Then saith he unto his disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few; Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his harvest.
This church isn’t just about filling seats — it’s about filling Heaven.
Looking Ahead
True Words Baptist Church is still young, but its foundation is strong. With God’s help, the vision is clear:
- Reach every home in Louisville with the Gospel.
- Train men to preach and families to stand firm.
- Send out new churches that will keep the Word of God alive in every generation.
Ephesians 3:21
Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.
