🎥 Baptist Bold: Ask a Pastor
📅 Episode 23 – Thursday: Doctrine Day
Question: “Did Jesus Really Go to Hell?”
🎬 Intro Script:
Welcome to Baptist Bold: Ask a Pastor—where truth isn’t filtered, and the Bible has the final word. I’m Pastor Joshua Tapp from True Words Baptist Church in Louisville, Kentucky. Let’s dive into today’s jaw-dropping question…
📖 Answer:
Yes—Jesus Christ literally went to hell.
That’s not opinion. That’s Bible fact.
And when we dig into what the Scriptures actually say, it gets even deeper.
1. His Soul Was Not Left in Hell—Because It Went There
📖 Acts 2:31 — “He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption.”
📖 Psalm 16:10 — “For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.”
The Bible doesn’t say Jesus avoided hell—it says He wasn’t left there.
His soul went to hell. Period. Believe it.
2. He Fully Tasted Death—Which Includes Hell
📖 Hebrews 2:9 — “…that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man.”
And what is the final death?
📖 Revelation 20:14 — “And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.”
If Jesus truly took our full punishment, then His soul had to go where ours would’ve gone.
3. The Psalms Show the Depth of His Suffering
🔥 Psalm 88
“Thou hast laid me in the lowest pit, in darkness, in the deeps… Thy wrath lieth hard upon me…”
There’s no peace, no resolution—just darkness, wrath, and separation.
It’s a prophetic window into what Christ endured beyond the cross.
🔥 Psalm 69
“I am come into deep waters, where the floods overflow me…”
This isn’t just physical agony—it’s spiritual drowning.
🔥 Psalm 116:3
“The sorrows of death compassed me, and the pains of hell gat hold upon me…”
Hell reached for Him.
And the Bible says He felt it.
4. Jonah’s Cry Matches the Pattern
📖 Jonah 2:2 — “Out of the belly of hell cried I…”
And Jesus said:
📖 Matthew 12:40 — “…so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.”
Jonah was in affliction. He cried out from hell’s grip.
That’s the picture Jesus gave of His own time in the heart of the earth.
5. What Did He Do in Hell? The Bible Doesn’t Say in Detail
We know:
- He didn’t suffer corruption (Psalm 16:10)
- He wasn’t left there (Acts 2:31)
- He came back with the keys (Revelation 1:18)
The Bible doesn’t say if He suffered in hell—only that His soul went there.
But the Psalms, Jonah, and Isaiah 53 all suggest He bore spiritual agony deeper than we often realize.
🎯 Bottom Line:
Yes—Jesus went to hell.
Not as a sinner. Not as a victim.
But as the perfect substitute for us all.
He wasn’t left there.
He conquered it.
And now He holds the keys.
📖 Revelation 1:18 — “…and have the keys of hell and of death.”
You don’t need to rewrite the Bible.
Just believe what’s written—and preach it boldly.
