Esther: The Bold Queen Who Saved Her People


Introduction

Description: The story of Esther unfolds during the reign of King Xerxes of Persia and highlights the extraordinary courage and faith of Esther, a Jewish woman who becomes the queen of Persia. Despite the dangers of exposing her heritage, Esther’s bravery to stand up for her people results in the deliverance of the Jews from a plot to annihilate them. This book demonstrates themes of courage, God’s sovereignty, and justice.


SECTION OUTLINE ONE (ESTHER 1-2)

The Rejection of Queen Vashti and Esther’s Rise to Power


I. The Rejection of Vashti (1:1-22)

👑 A. A Banquet for His Provincial Officials (1:1-4): King Xerxes hosts a grand banquet for his 127 provinces, celebrating his power and wealth.
🍷 B. A Banquet for His Palace Officials (1:5-22): Xerxes, in his intoxication, commands Queen Vashti to appear before the guests. When she refuses, the king deposes her, and the empire is left without a queen.


II. The Selection of Esther (2:1-20)

💃 A. The Search (2:1-4): A beauty contest is held to find a new queen, with young women from across the empire presented before the king.
🌹 B. The Sending Away (2:5-8): Esther, a Jewish girl raised by her cousin Mordecai, is among those selected to appear before the king.
💖 C. The Special Favor (2:9): Esther wins the favor of Hegai, the eunuch in charge of the royal harem, and is granted special privileges.
👑 D. The Summons (2:12-19): After a year of beauty treatments, Esther captivates King Xerxes and becomes his new queen, though she keeps her Jewish heritage a secret.


III. The Detection by Mordecai (2:21-23)

🔍 A. A Plot Revealed (2:21-22): Mordecai overhears a plot to assassinate the king and reports it through Esther.
📜 B. A Plot Recorded (2:23): The conspirators are hanged, and Mordecai’s deed is documented in the king’s records, setting the stage for his later honor.


SECTION OUTLINE TWO (ESTHER 3-5)

Haman’s Plot Against the Jews and Esther’s Intervention


I. The Problem (3:1-15)

💼 A. Haman the Haughty (3:1-2): Haman, newly promoted to the position of prime minister, demands that all officials bow before him.
😡 B. Haman the Hateful (3:3-5): Mordecai refuses to bow to Haman, igniting his fury and prompting him to devise a plan to exterminate all Jews.
💣 C. Haman the Heartless (3:6-15):

  • 1. The Plot (3:6-9): Haman persuades Xerxes to issue a decree to destroy the Jews across the empire.
  • 2. The Permission (3:10-11): Xerxes grants Haman’s request, and letters are dispatched, condemning the Jews.
  • 3. The Proclamation (3:12-15): The decree to annihilate the Jews is announced, setting a date for their destruction.

II. The Plan (4:1-5:14)

🌟 A. Mordecai’s Request (4:1-14): Mordecai urges Esther to intervene on behalf of the Jews, reminding her that she may have been placed in her royal position for such a time as this.
🎯 B. Esther’s Response (4:15-5:14):

  • 1. The Faith (4:15-17): Esther agrees to approach the king, despite the risk, after fasting for three days.
  • 2. The Fearlessness (5:1): Esther enters the king’s court uninvited, but Xerxes warmly welcomes her.
  • 3. The Favor (5:2-3): Esther asks for a banquet with Xerxes and Haman, to which the king agrees.
  • 4. The Feasts (5:4-8): Esther hosts a second banquet and prepares to make her request.
  • 5. The Fury (5:9-13): Haman, enraged by Mordecai’s refusal to bow, plans to hang him.
  • 6. The Fatal Advice (5:14): Haman’s wife and friends advise him to build a gallows for Mordecai.

SECTION OUTLINE THREE (ESTHER 6-10)

Mordecai is Honored, Haman is Hanged, and the Jews are Saved


I. Honoring Mordecai (6:1-14)

📚 A. The Discovery (6:1-3): King Xerxes learns that Mordecai had previously saved his life and never received a reward for his loyalty.
🏆 B. The Discussion (6:4-9): Haman, thinking the king wants to honor him, proposes a grand public display of honor for someone who pleases the king.
🎉 C. The Decision (6:10-14): The king commands Haman to carry out the honor for Mordecai, humiliating Haman in the process.


II. Hanging Haman (7:1-10)

⚖️ A. The Treachery Learned (7:1-6): At the second banquet, Esther reveals Haman’s plot to destroy her people, exposing his treachery.
💀 B. The Tables Turned (7:7-10): Furious, the king orders Haman to be hanged on the gallows he had prepared for Mordecai.


III. Helping the Jews (8:1-9:16)

🛡️ A. The Anguish of Esther (8:1-6): Esther pleads with Xerxes to reverse the decree to annihilate the Jews.
📜 B. The Actions of the King (8:7-17): Xerxes issues a new decree allowing the Jews to defend themselves against their enemies.
⚔️ C. The Avenging of the Jews (9:1-16): On the appointed day, the Jews defend themselves successfully, killing 75,000 enemies and avenging Haman’s plot.


IV. Hallowing the Day (9:17-10:3)

🎉 A. The Announcing of Purim (9:17-32): The Festival of Purim is established as a two-day celebration to remember the deliverance of the Jews.
📈 B. The Advancement of Mordecai (10:1-3): Mordecai is appointed prime minister, second in command only to King Xerxes.
