The Doctrine of Eternal Security

the doctrine of eternal security

Salvation once received can never be lost — because eternal life means eternal.

The doctrine of eternal security proclaims the unbreakable promise of God: that every believer who has trusted in Jesus Christ is saved forever.

Our salvation rests not in our faithfulness, but in His. Once a person believes on Christ, they are sealed, kept, and preserved by the power of God — eternally secure in the hand of the Savior.

This doctrine is part of our full Statement of Faith.

John 10:28–29
And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. 29 My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand.

1. The Doctrine of Eternal Security Means Eternal Life Begins the Moment You Believe

Salvation is not a temporary state or probationary period — it is a permanent gift.

The believer passes from death to life immediately and can never return to condemnation.

John 5:24
Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.

John 6:47
Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life.

The moment of faith is the moment of new birth — and no one can be unborn.

The Doctrine of Salvation teaches that everlasting life is a present possession, not a future hope.

2. The Believer Is Kept by God’s Power

The doctrine of Eternal security is not maintained by human effort but by divine preservation. The same power that saves us keeps us. God Himself takes full responsibility for the safekeeping of every believer.

1 Peter 1:5
Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

Jude 24
Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy.

No failure, sin, or circumstance can undo what God has finished.

The Doctrine of the Holy Ghost confirms that believers are sealed until the day of redemption.

3. The Holy Spirit Seals Every Believer

At the moment of salvation, the Holy Spirit indwells the believer and seals him eternally. This seal cannot be broken — it is God’s guarantee that redemption is complete.

Ephesians 1:13–14
In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, 14 Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.

Ephesians 4:30
And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.

God’s seal is not conditional — it lasts “unto the day of redemption.”

The Doctrine of God the Father reminds us that His children are eternally adopted into His family.

4. Sin Cannot Undo Salvation

Though sin damages fellowship, it cannot destroy sonship. When a believer sins, they face chastening from a loving Father, not condemnation from a righteous Judge. The doctrine of eternal security makes it very clear that once saved always saved. Everlasting means forever.

Hebrews 12:6–7
For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth. 7 If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not?

Romans 8:38–39
For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, 39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

The blood of Jesus Christ paid for all sin — past, present, and future.

The Doctrine of the Blood proves that forgiveness is total and final. The doctrine of eternal security means a believer is safe and secure forever.

5. The Doctrine of Eternal Security Motivates Holiness, Not Sin

Some accuse this doctrine of giving a license to sin, but Scripture teaches the opposite. Knowing that salvation is secure should lead to deeper love, gratitude, and obedience.

Romans 6:1–2
What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? 2 God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?

Galatians 5:13
For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another.

Eternal security is not permission to sin — it is the assurance that grace is greater than sin. True gratitude for salvation leads to faithful service.

Application and Affirmation

The doctrine of eternal security gives rest to the weary, courage to the fearful, and confidence to the believer.

It removes doubt, replaces fear with faith, and magnifies the sufficiency of Christ’s work. To question the doctrine of eternal security is to question the very power of the cross. Doubting everlasting life is spitting in the face of Jesus.

2 Timothy 1:12
For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.

Affirmation:

  • Eternal life is eternal — not temporary.
  • The believer is kept by God’s power, not man’s effort.
  • The Holy Spirit seals every believer forever.
  • Sin affects fellowship but not salvation.
  • Eternal security strengthens holiness and faith.
