Why Go To Church

Hello, my name is Joshua Tapp. I’m with True Words Baptist Church in Louisville, Kentucky.

Many people have stopped going to church. You might be one of those people. Or maybe you’ve never faithfully attended church at all.

I wanted to go over why it’s so important to go to church.

What is Church?

This is important to understand as I go out preaching the Gospel door to door often so I speak with many people out in this world today.

Some people believe that they are having their own church at home. You can have church at home, but God lists out requirements for his churches within the Bible.

You need to meet the requirements within the Bible for God to see your home church as a Biblical church. And most people I speak with are not meeting those requirements.

You’ll find information within the book of Acts, which is a history of the early church. We find examples for churches within that book.

The books of Romans, 1 Corinthians, 2 Corinthians, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, 1 Thessalonians, and 2 Thessalonians are letters to some of the first New Testament churches to ever exist. And we are in the New Testament as we speak so we need to follow those examples.

There are even letters to church leaders within the Bible. The books of 1 Timothy, 2 Timothy, Titus, and Philemon are letters to church leaders.

A church is gathering together of believers. This would be a gathering together of people who have been saved by the blood of Jesus Christ. But the churches also need leaders. You can’t have a church without leaders. And those leaders must meet the Biblical requirements.

Biblical Requirements for Church Offices

The only two offices within a church are a pastor/bishop/elder (same thing) and a deacon. There is no office of evangelist or any other office within a church. So, the church leaders are a pastor and a deacon.

If we attempt to create other church offices that aren’t Biblical, such as evangelist or local leader, we are going against the word of God. This is not Biblical.

Pastors and deacons for local churches should be on site locally with the people. They shouldn’t be ruling over a church from a distance. A pastor of a church should be there in person to lead the church and the people. A deacon of a church should be there in person to lead the church.

1 Timothy 3:1-7
This is a true saying, If a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work.  2 A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach;  3 Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous;  4 One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity;  5 (For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?)  6 Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil.  7 Moreover he must have a good report of them which are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.

Here are just some of the requirements for a pastor that we just read:

  1. Husband of one wife
  2. Rules his own house well
  3. Must have faithful children

There are many more requirements for a pastor, but just those three rule out many people who believe they are leading a church at home. A pastor must be ordained. I believe that a pastor needs to be sent out from a like minded church by another pastor. Ordained is chosen.

Here are some requirements for a deacon:

  1. The wife must be faithful
  2. Husband of one wife
  3. Must rule over their children and houses well

Again, this rules out many people from leading a church. But, this is what God requires in the Bible. He wants men, not women, leading the church of God.

So, you need to find a church like True Words Baptist Church that meets all of these requirements. We have a pastor and a deacon that meets the Biblical requirements.

If you don’t have an ordained pastor, as an example, you don’t have a Biblical church. You aren’t having church at home. It’s something else. It’s not church.

So, you need at least a pastor and you need a gathering together of believers or saved people.

For example, a gathering together of people who believe they must be baptized in water to be saved is not a Biblical church. It’s something else. It’s not a church in God’s eyes.

The Commandment to Assemble Together

The New Testament letters to churches, church leaders, and general letters are all written to believers. And believers are commanded to gather together physically and in person.

A church over the internet where people aren’t physically gathered together is not a church.

Hebrews 10:24-25
And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: 25 Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.

We need to assemble ourselves together, which is called church. The Bible warns us to not forsake the assembling of ourselves together as the manner of some is. Why is that?

Because we need to exhort one another. What does that mean? We are to incite one another to good works. We need to encourage each other to do the right things. For example, you are only saved because someone went to a good church and started doing good works.

Exhort One Another To Good Works Such As Soul Winning

Our church sends our people out to preach the Gospel in our community. If someone hears the Gospel and believes the Gospel, they are saved forever. If we aren’t going out to preach the Gospel, or doing the first works, Jesus will remove our church. We won’t be a Biblical church any more.

Revelation 2:5
Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent.

Revelation Chapter 2 and 3 is written to seven churches. A Biblical church is supposed to do the first works or preaching the Gospel or what we call soul winning in our church. We exhort and encourage our people to go out and preach the Gospel.

If we won’t do this, Jesus says that he will remove thy candlestick.

Revelation 1:20
The mystery of the seven stars which thou sawest in my right hand, and the seven golden candlesticks. The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches: and the seven candlesticks which thou sawest are the seven churches.

A candlestick represents a church according to the Book of Revelation. Jesus himself will remove a church if a church won’t do the first works of preaching the Gospel.

We assemble together to exhort each other to do good works. This is just one reason God wants us assembling together in a Biblical church.

You were saved by someone coming to you with the Gospel. That someone came from a church. And that’s why church is so important. You’re going to heaven because a church did the job Jesus gave that church to do.

We do our best, as a church, to go out soul winning daily.

Acts 5:42
And daily in the temple, and in every house, they ceased not to teach and preach Jesus Christ.

We love soul winning. We show our love for the people out there by going to them.

Jesus gave us that job to do and we, at True Words Baptist Church, will do that job as long as I’m alive. But that’s not the only job God gave us to do.

Pray, Sing, Praise, and Worship God

When we come together in church, we pray together. We’ll teach you how to pray. We sing together. We’ll teach you how to sing. We praise God together. We worship God together. We teach you how to do these things. We show God that we love him by gathering together for him.

We gather together at least four times per week in church services.

  1. Sunday Morning at 10 AM for Sunday School
  2. Sunday Morning at 11 AM for Sunday Worship
  3. Sunday Evening at 6 PM for Sunday Worship
  4. Thursday Evening at 7 PM for Bible Study

You’ll see that we pray to God. We do this as an offering to God. We love him. We want to show him that we love him.

Psalm 141:2
Let my prayer be set forth before thee as incense; and the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice.

We will pray during church, and we will lift up our hands to God to worship him.

Proverbs 15:8
The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the LORD: but the prayer of the upright is his delight.

God wants to hear from his people. The Bible says that we have not because we ask not. We come together to ask him for help. We ask him for what we need as a church. He listens. He hears. He answers. We wait upon the Lord.

When you need prayers, you’ll have all of us there at church praying for you together. “The prayer of the upright is his delight.” God is delighted to hear from you and I and especially when we do his works daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly.

If you don’t come to church, you’re missing out on special communications with God. When we do what God asks, he hears us. He wants you to come to church. I want you to come to church. Pray, sing, praise, and worship God and Jesus Christ together with us.

God Commands Us To Preach the Word

When you come to church at True Words Baptist Church, you’re going to hear preaching directly from the perfect word of God. And you’ll hear the preaching from saved men, ordained men, who love and study the word of God.

2 Timothy 4:2
Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.

We don’t hold back. We aren’t ashamed of God’s words. We tell you the truth.

We love you. We care for you. We are here to help you. We are here to guide you. We serve you. We answer you when you need an answer. We speak good words to you.

John 8:31-32
Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;  32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

The word of God sets you free, increases your faith, provokes you to do good, helps you to love others even more, and profits everyone around you.

Here at this church, Scripture is used to interpret Scripture. Fairy tales are not created at True Words Baptist Church. We study the Bible from cover to cover for every sermon and ensure, to the best of our ability, the things that are taught match with all Scripture.

You’ll see the difference in the preaching at True Words Baptist Church. If you aren’t learning, then we aren’t preaching the word of God. His words are eternal, and they will always teach you something you need to know.

Make Friends Who Actually Love You and Care For You

When you come to church with us, you will find all types of people who will love you and care for you. We’ll work together to do our absolute best for Jesus Christ.

1 Thessalonians 5:11-15
Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do.  12 And we beseech you, brethren, to know them which labour among you, and are over you in the Lord, and admonish you;  13 And to esteem them very highly in love for their work’s sake. And be at peace among yourselves.  14 Now we exhort you, brethren, warn them that are unruly, comfort the feebleminded, support the weak, be patient toward all men.  15 See that none render evil for evil unto any man; but ever follow that which is good, both among yourselves, and to all men.

We will comfort each other, edify one another, work hard together, admonish each other, esteem each other, and we will be at peace with each other.

We will exhort, warn, comfort, support, and be patient toward all men. We will not render evil for evil unto any man. We will follow that which is good among ourselves, and not just among ourselves, but to all men.

We are here to serve you.
