We’re going to begin our Sunday School in the New Testament in the Gospel of Matthew. Let’s get started there in verse 1 of Matthew Chapter 1.

Matthew 1:1
The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.

God says that this book, Matthew, is “the book of the generation of Jesus Christ.” This is his generation. This is where the Lord Jesus Christ comes from in the flesh. We know that Jesus is God manifest in the flesh.

We know that Jesus is the Son of God, but He’s also God Himself. He has no beginning and no ending.

But this book is going to show us that God, Jesus Christ, came down and made himself of no reputation. He took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men.

He Shows Us How Much He Cares By Becoming The Son of Man

I want you to take a few moments and realize what Jesus did and why He did it.

He came in the likeness of you and I. Understand the love that He has for you and I. And being found in fashion as a man, He humbled Himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

The Bible tells us right there in Matthew 1:1 that Jesus is the son of David, the son of Abraham. Realize the magnitude of that statement. God Himself is the actual son of David. He is the actual son of Abraham. Not a direct son as my Dad is right there. Not a direct son but in that line.

How can that be? God is absolutely amazing, and He came to show us His love for us and His creation. He became the Son of man. He’s the eternal Son of God. He is God. But He is the Son of man.

That’s mind blowing, and it’s not something we should take lightly.

From Abraham to David to Jesus Christ

Notice the order of things there in verse 1. Jesus is listed first, then David, then Abraham. We’re going to see the generation of Jesus Christ from Abraham, to David, and then to Jesus Himself.

And remember that God’s word is absolutely perfect without error. The order of things written in Matthew Chapter 1 is perfect.

We’re going to slow down in Sunday School and look very closely at every word of God.

So, in that first verse right there, we see the phrase, between commas, the “son of David.”

Search The Scriptures for the “son of David”

When we search the Scriptures for that exact phrase, “SON OF DAVID,” what do we find? We find 26 matches in 25 verses throughout the entire King James Bible. I want you to see the list of people who are called the “son of David” with that exact phrase throughout the entire Bible.

We see Absalom, Amnon, Solomon, Jerimoth, Jesus, Joseph, and Nathan. 7 total people.

The first in all the Bible is Absalom the “son of David.” He is the third son born to David in Hebron.

The second in all the Bible is Amnon the “son of David.” He was David’s first born child in Hebron.

The third in all the Bible is Solomon the “son of David.” He was David’s tenth born child overall to Bathsheba in Jerusalem. Solomon is mentioned more than anyone as the son of David besides Jesus Christ. This occurs 7 times.

Then we see Jerimoth the “son of David.”

Jesus Christ is “THE” Son of David

We see Jesus Christ mentioned as the “Son of David” fourteen times in the New Testament.

Matthew 22:42
Saying, What think ye of Christ? whose son is he? They say unto him, The Son of David.

They knew, because of the Scriptures, that the Christ would be the Son of David.

Mark 10:46
And they came to Jericho: and as he went out of Jericho with his disciples and a great number of people, blind Bartimaeus, the son of Timaeus, sat by the highway side begging.

Mark 10:47-48
And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out, and say, Jesus, thou Son of David, have mercy on me.  48 And many charged him that he should hold his peace: but he cried the more a great deal, Thou Son of David, have mercy on me.

This man, blind Bartimaeus, knew that Jesus was the Christ. He believed in Jesus. He confessed Jesus before men very loudly. People wanted him to be quiet. But he cried the more a GREAT DEAL, “thou Son of David, have mercy on me.” He believed and called upon the Lord.

And he was saved. And, because of his faith in the Christ, the Son of David, Jesus gave him his sight. “Go thy way; thy faith hath made thee whole.”

Jesus is “THE” Son of David in the Bible. But we see others.

The Two Physical Generations of Jesus Christ

Nathan is the “son of David” in Luke Chapter 3. He was a physical son of David.

The only two genealogies in the New Testament are right here in Matthew Chapter 1 and in Luke Chapter 3 where Nathan is mentioned as the son of David.

Nathan was born to David and is listed directly before Solomon in Jerusalem. This is important to know.

The physical line of Jesus here in Matthew Chapter 1 is from Abraham to king David, through Solomon and the kings, to Joseph the husband of Mary.

The other generation of Jesus Christ is given in Luke Chapter 3. Nathan is mentioned there because Mary comes through Nathan the son of David.

All Genealogies in the Bible End with Jesus Christ

And all genealogies in the Bible end with the birth of Jesus Christ. We don’t need any other genealogies. It’s finished with Christ.

He was born in the flesh, and the genealogies end. Notice that in the Bible.

After Jesus, there are no more genealogies in the Bible. You’re going to see just that in this chapter.

Now, let’s take a look at the next phrase there in verse 1. “Son of Abraham.” How many times is that phrase in the King James Bible? It’s there just three times. There’s one of them in Matthew 1:1. Another is in Luke 3:34 when the Bible speaks of Isaac being the son of Abraham.

And the last instance I want to show you in Luke 19:9 when Jesus is speaking about Zacchaeus.

Luke 19:5-6
And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up, and saw him, and said unto him, Zacchaeus, make haste, and come down; for to day I must abide at thy house.  6 And he made haste, and came down, and received him joyfully.

Luke 19:7-8
And when they saw it, they all murmured, saying, That he was gone to be guest with a man that is a sinner.  8 And Zacchaeus stood, and said unto the Lord; Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have taken any thing from any man by false accusation, I restore him fourfold.

Luke 19:9-10
And Jesus said unto him, This day is salvation come to this house, forsomuch as he also is a son of Abraham.  10 For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.

Right there in verse 9 you see the phrase “son of Abraham.”

Zacchaeus Put His Faith in Jesus and Became the Son of Abraham

Jesus is saying that Zacchaeus was a son of Abraham meaning he is from the physical line of Abraham but more importantly, he is a son of Abraham through faith in Jesus Christ. Jesus is telling us right there that Zacchaeus was a saved man because he believed in Him.

Galatians 3:7
Know ye therefore that they which are of faith, the same are the children of Abraham.

The Bible says that Abraham is the father of all that have faith in Jesus Christ. We are the children of Abraham. I am a son of Abraham by faith in Jesus Christ. I’m not the physical seed of Abraham. But spiritually, I am the son of Abraham.

Zaccheus was the son of Abraham by faith in Jesus Christ.

And listen, the only thing that separates people in heaven and hell is faith in Jesus Christ. I want to show you someone else who called Abraham Father. He was a son of Abraham physically but not spiritually.

The Rich Man is in Hell and He Was a Physical Child of Abraham

Luke 16:19-21
There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day:  20 And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores,  21 And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man’s table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores.

Luke 16:22-23
And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham’s bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried;  23 And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.

Luke 16:24-25
And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.  25 But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented.

This rich man is in hell. He cries and says “Father Abraham, have mercy on me.” This man is from Abraham’s physical seed. Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob who is Israel. This man in hell is an Israelite. So, obviously, not all of the physical seed of Abraham are going to heaven.

Abraham calls this man, “Son” right there in verse 25. These aren’t lies. This is the word of God. Not all of physical Israel will be saved. That man wasn’t saved. And he’s not getting out of hell.

Luke 16:26-28
And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence.  27 Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father’s house:  28 For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment.

Once You Are In Hell, There’s No Getting Out

The Bible tells us that this rich man is staying in hell forever. This man is in torments. Since he isn’t getting out, he calls Abraham father once again in verse 27, and asks him to send someone to his father’s house to testify unto his 5 brothers.

This man in hell is trying to tell anyone out there to believe in the Lord Jesus Christ. If you aren’t sure you’re saved today, today is the day. That man in hell is telling you this.

You are only a child of Abraham by faith in Jesus Christ. And when you put all your faith in Jesus Christ to save you and nothing in yourself or anything else, then you are saved forever, once and for all, once saved always saved. You become a child of God in a moment.

Genesis 12:3
And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.

God is speaking to Abraham right there. “In thee shall ALL FAMILIES of the earth be blessed.”

Not just the physical children of Israel. ALL FAMILIES. Red, yellow, black, and white. It doesn’t matter where you came from and what color your skin happens to be. You didn’t choose it. God chose it for you. And God wants every single person in existence to be saved. He’s not willing that any should perish.

Genesis 18:18
Seeing that Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him?

Genesis 26:4
And I will make thy seed to multiply as the stars of heaven, and will give unto thy seed all these countries; and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed;

Galatians 3:8-9
And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all nations be blessed.  9 So then they which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham.

Blessed Through Abraham Through Jesus Christ Alone

How is everyone blessed through Abraham? God tells Abraham, “IN THY SEED shall all the nations of the earth be blessed.”

Galatians 3:16
Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ.

God said, “In thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed.” Not one nation. All nations. And not many seeds. “But as of one, and to thy seed, which is Christ.”

Jesus Christ is the one.

All families and all nations are blessed through Jesus Christ. Not through me. I must decrease. He must increase. Not through you. Not through anyone else. Only through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Romans 6:23
For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Eternal life only comes THROUGH Jesus Christ. He paid for the free gift. He offers it to you today. He wants you to take that gift by believing in Him.

If I believe I’m going to be good enough to get into heaven, I am not going to heaven. I must believe, in a single moment of my life, that Jesus is the only one who can save me. Not me in any way, shape, or form. I am not good. Jesus is good. I simply believe in Him and put it all on Him.

If you do that right now, you are the son of Abraham. Abraham believed and it was accounted unto him for righteousness.

Jesus Is The Seed of Abraham But Was Before Abraham

So, we go back to Matthew Chapter 1 and we see verse 1 yet again.

Matthew 1:1
The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.

He is the son of Abraham. The seed of Abraham. But we know Jesus was before Abraham.

John 8:58
Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.

People will tell me, at times, when I am out preaching the Gospel that Jesus never said he was God. Muslims will say this at times. Well, there it is. And there’s many more than that. The Jews killed Jesus because He said He was God over and over again.

Jesus says, “Before Abraham was, I AM.”

Exodus 3:14
And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.

GOD SAID, I AM. Jesus says, I AM. Jesus is God. He’s not the Father. He’s not the Holy Spirit. He is the Son of God and He is God.

Isaiah 44:6
Thus saith the LORD the King of Israel, and his redeemer the LORD of hosts; I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God.

Revelation 1:8
I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.

Jesus is God

Jesus is God. He is the Son of God. He is the Son of man. He’s the Son of David. He’s the Son of Abraham. Only God could do something like that. He is the son of man. He is the Son of God.

Matthew 22:41-43
While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them,  42 Saying, What think ye of Christ? whose son is he? They say unto him, The Son of David.  43 He saith unto them, How then doth David in spirit call him Lord, saying,

Matthew 22:44-46
The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool?  45 If David then call him Lord, how is he his son?  46 And no man was able to answer him a word, neither durst any man from that day forth ask him any more questions.

We can answer because we believe. We have put our faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. We believe His words. He existed long before Abraham was born. From eternity Jesus has been there. He was there long before David was born. But He is the Son of Abraham and the Son of David.

The Genealogy of Jesus Christ in Matthew and Luke

And we will see his physical line called the generation of Jesus Christ in Matthew Chapter 1. We also see His physical line in Luke Chapter 3, but they are different. 40 names are listed in Matthew Chapter 1 in the generation of Jesus Christ. 75 are given in Luke Chapter 3.

In Matthew Chapter 1, we see Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and then Judas or Judah. He was the son of Jacob or Israel. The tribes of Israel come from Jacob. He had 12 sons. Judah was one of those 12 sons. Jesus comes from that line with Judah.

From Judah, we go down the line. We see kings of Judah in the line of Jesus Christ starting with king David. Jesus is the lion of the tribe of Judah. We see Babylon conquer the kings of Judah here in Matthew Chapter 1. Jechonias and his brethren were carried away to Babylon.

Then we see the line of Jesus in Babylon and then all the way to Joseph. I believe the generation of Jesus Christ given in Matthew Chapter 1 is the line through Joseph. I believe the generation of Jesus Christ given in Luke Chapter 3 is through Mary.

The lines split at the sons of David, Solomon and Nathan. Joseph the husband of Mary comes from King David. Mary comes from King David. Joseph comes from king Solomon the son of David and Mary comes from his brother Nathan the son of David.

They are both physically from the tribe of Judah. Joseph is in the line of the kings of Judah. Joseph is from king David and so is Mary. But the sides split at king David. Joseph through king Solomon. Mary through the other son of David who is Nathan. King David is where they split, hence, THE SON OF DAVID.

Jesus, David, and Abraham

So, again, to close, we go back to Matthew 1:1 and we take a close look.

Matthew 1:1
The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.

Both Joseph and Mary come from Abraham and David. From David, the generation of Joseph and Mary are different.

So, I’m excited to go through the Gospel of Matthew or the Book of Matthew in great detail. This book is all about the Lord Jesus Christ. And we’re going to learn so much from this book. I hope you’ll continue to come in person or online to study the Bible with us.

Sunday School is going to be all about going through the Scriptures in detail.

We will increase our faith here. We will learn the Bible. We will need the Bible forever. This is the eternal word of God and it will never go away. We have only begun to scratch the surface. We’re going to see more and more and more as we study the eternal word of God. Let’s pray.
