SECTION ONE (AMOS 1-2): Divine Judgment on the Nations

I. THE REVELATION OF GOD’S JUDGMENT (1:1-2) 🔥

  • Amos’s Vision: Amos receives a divine vision of God’s wrath falling upon several nations, including Damascus, Philistia, Tyre, Ammon, Moab, Judah, and Israel.

II. THE RECIPIENTS OF GOD’S JUDGMENT (1:3-2:16) ⚖️

A. Damascus (1:3-5) 🌍

  • Sin: Ravaging the Israelite city of Gilead.
  • Sentence: Damascus will be burned, and its people enslaved.

B. Philistia (1:6-8) ⛓️

  • Sin: Selling God’s people into slavery.
  • Sentence: The Philistine cities will be destroyed.

C. Tyre (1:9-10) 🔥

  • Sin: Breaking their treaty with Israel.
  • Sentence: Tyre will be burned.

D. Edom (1:11-12) ⚔️

  • Sin: Persecuting Israel with the sword.
  • Sentence: Edom’s cities will be burned.

E. Ammon (1:13-15) 👶

  • Sin: Killing pregnant women in Gilead.
  • Sentence: Ammon will be enslaved, and their cities burned.

F. Moab (2:1-3) ☠️

  • Sin: Desecrating tombs.
  • Sentence: Moab’s cities will be destroyed, and their people killed.

G. Judah (2:4-5) 📜

  • Sin: Rejecting God’s law.
  • Sentence: Judah will face destruction in Jerusalem.

H. Israel (2:6-16) 🇮🇱

  • Sins:
    • Bribery, cruelty to the poor, immorality, hypocrisy, and leading others into sin.
  • Sentence: Israel will face devastation, with enemies defeating them and leaving them helpless.

SECTION TWO (AMOS 3-6): Three Powerful Sermons by Amos

I. AMOS’S FIRST SERMON (3:1-15) 🗣️

A. The Privileges of Israel (3:1-3)

  • God treats Israel as a special nation but demands righteousness.

B. The Perversions of Israel (3:10)

  • The nation is full of stolen goods and moral corruption.

C. The Prophecy Against Israel (3:4-9, 11-15)

  • God’s wrath will fall like a roaring lion, and Israel’s enemies will devour them.

II. AMOS’S SECOND SERMON (4:1-13) 💔

A. Denouncing the Godless Women of Israel (4:1-5)

  • The women will be dragged away, reflecting the nation’s moral decay.

B. Defending the Patience of God (4:6-13)

  • Despite Israel’s sin, God has been patient, but judgment is imminent.

III. AMOS’S THIRD SERMON (5:1-6:14) 🔔

A. God’s Invitation to Repent (5:4-9, 14-15)

  • Seek God, renounce idolatry, and do what is good to live.

B. God’s Indictment of Israel’s Sins (5:1-3, 10-13, 16-27; 6:1-14)

  • Israel’s corruption includes bribery, laziness, drunkenness, arrogance, and idolatry. God will send them into exile.

SECTION THREE (AMOS 7-9): Visions of Judgment and Restoration

I. THE PLAGUES (7:1-9; 8:1-9:10) 🐛

  • Vision of the Locusts (7:1-3): Israel’s crops are threatened by locusts, but Amos intercedes.
  • Vision of the Fire (7:4-6): A devastating fire threatens Israel, but Amos again prays, and it is averted.
  • Vision of the Plumb Line (7:7-9): God measures the nation’s spiritual state, and judgment follows.
  • Vision of the Summer Fruit (8:1-14): Israel’s sin has ripened to the point of no return, bringing God’s judgment.

II. THE PRIEST (7:10-17)

  • Amos Confronts Amaziah: Amos rebukes the false priest, Amaziah, who slanders him and warns of dire consequences.

III. THE PROMISES OF RESTORATION (9:11-15) 🌿

  • Jerusalem Rebuilt: The walls of Jerusalem will be restored to their former glory.
  • Israel Restored to Their Land: God will bring the people back, and they will rebuild their cities.
